- Azmodan is the Lord of Sin
- The seven deadly sins are: Wrath, Greed, Sloth, Pride, Lust, Envy, and Gluttony (Wikipedia, 2011)
At the 1:20 mark of the black soulstone cinematic we see what looks like a council room with several thrones and one large throne in the middle. Specifically we see is from Right to left, three regular thrones, one large throne and then three more regular thrones each with a demon sitting upon it with a different headdress awaking.
- There are total seven thrones, one representing each sin.
Problem: The center throne should belong to Azmodan himself, however he represents all seven sins. There is a throne missing for the seventh sin.
Potential solution: Perhaps Azmodan accounts for what is the considered the worst of the seven sins? A quick google search lead me to this answer which seems the most thought out.
-Pride
This may have also just been a design choice because with 8 thrones Azmodan couldn't be center or would have to be behind/in-front
-We know that boss fights would be more strategy based and there would be methods to retrieve health globes during fights
-I speculate that when we face Azmodan, we will have to also fight the other council members. These council members would make the boss encounter more dynamic and provide opportunities for players to find health globes. (e.g. council member summons weaker demons)
-It was speculated back in early 2010 that Azmodan would possess skills and traits representing the seven sins here. I believe the cinematic cements the fact that we will instead have to at some point fight minions representing deadly sins along with Azmodan.
Didn't notice the 7 thrones, but ye makes sense it's a reference to the 7 sins.
As for Azmodan representing the 7 sins, I believe the design team tried to incorporate this into his design.
Mostly by small features such as jewelry & piercings to account for pride. Gluttony, greed, lust are all represented by his rather "large" appearance. Wrath comes to play from his inner furnace, more or less.

Perhaps the 7th and mostly deadly sin (Pride) is you.
Being the hero/heroes that have chosen to master demons & angels far more powerful than themselves, maybe they'll have to fight dastardly mirror images- something akin to the Ancient fight in the Diablo 2 expansion.
Maybe you Calaveras since now you're in the beta right?? =)
Yeah, I dont think they'll answer anything lore related.
But, on the same subject, there is no way we can assume that the lesser evils are now called Prime Evils, and that the lesser evils generals are now called lesser evils. Nobody said nothing to make us think that.
The only thing we know, is that Azmodan wants to turn into THE prime evil. And to do so, he would have to eliminate the current prime evils, and the prime evil wannabes. That's why he needs the "black soulstone".
It would be wrong to assume he already is considered the prime evil, and his generals lesser evils.
Plus, there are six creatures on the thrones, and there should be seven.
The lesser evils do not include lilith. My understanding is...diablo, baal, and mephisto are prime evils. Duriel, andariel, belial and azmodan are lesser evils.
Well it can't be..... THe lesser evils are Azmodan, Lilith, Andariel and Duriel(correct me if Im wrong). Andariel and Duriel are allready dead and azmodan is on the ground speaking, so that's only Lilith that's left. We see 3 demons, but theres only 1 left to be seen, so it's NOT the lesser evils.
Lesser Evils are Azmodan, Belial, Duriel and Andariel. Someone in the Lore panel asked what happened to the other two lesser evils, Duriel and Andariel, and they didn't wanted to answer. They've just said that we're gonna have to play D3 to find out.
Sooo.. at the time, we dont really know how many prime or lesser evils are around.
The cinematic guys have been working close with the lore guys for years now. I really dont think they'll randomly name creatures as "lesser evils" just for fun. They know what the creatures are, they have been working on the concept art long time, they even say that the lesser evils must look like a shady and smokey creatures. At this time, I can't tell you who those creatures are, but I tell you this, those are NOT Azmodan's generals.
Plus, think about it. The creatures look old, skinny, emaciated and quite archaic. If they wanted to make 7 sins themed creatures, this are not the right designs for it.
The also clearly state that Belial is allready in act 2 and why would the sit together when they are fighting for power? I think he said the wrong at the panel and that is 3 of Azmodans generals, 3 of the 7 sins, but only time will tell
Two different guys, in two different moments of the panel say that the cratures are the lesser evils.
There are 6 creatures, not seven.
You're just not listening.
What makes you think they are THE lesser evils, and not just "lesser evils.
Also, what makes you think because those are the thrones of the lesser evils that it's still the same creatures sitting on them right now after 60 years of Azmonda ruling over Hell.
Apparently neither are you.... You see 7 "thrones" but ONLY 3 demons. THink about it, if theres 4 lesser evils, how could there be 6 creatuers if they are supposed to be the lesser evils?
ill bet you, that you are wrong
Well, you need to do both, listen and watch.
Watch the cinematic panel. See seven thrones. See six creatures on them. Shit bricks.
Plus, they only talk about Lesser Evils when "active" creatures appear and turn to leah. Only three ceatures appear to be active, and that has been done intentionally.
Yes but a lesser evil (Azmonda) is sitting in the throne of the prime evil. So things lower than a lesser evil can be sitting on the other thrones. Also, some thrones are empty.
It's been said that Azmonda has ruled over Hell for 60 years, why wouldn't he be sitting there.
Ok then you're right, he's the prime evil. game over.
Hum.. that doesn't sounds right.
[/quote]
Wtf, he is not THE prime evil. He's just sitting in the prime evil throne because Diablo is not in Hell. Hes probably in another plane. So is Meph and Baal.

In fact, they say this: "Which we see here is the Lesser Evils that are up on their thrones"
As for Azmodan representing the 7 sins, I believe the design team tried to incorporate this into his design.

Lesser Evils. Not Azmodan's commanders. Not seven deadly sins.

He only has 3 generals :
Another thing we get to see in the cinematic, is that one of the "active" lesser evils is female. Any idea?
It's been said that Azmonda has ruled over Hell for 60 years, why wouldn't he be sitting there.
Now you're just being silly XD
Before Azmodan appears, they show the Throne, and totally it's empty.
Ok then you're right, he's the prime evil. game over.
Hum.. that doesn't sounds right.
It is REALLY not much of a stretch to assume he was not in the throne because he was elsewhere...
because if he's not currently sitting in it at all times then its not his? lmao
Ok then you're right, he's the prime evil. game over.
