Build Guide

To be clear: this is a historical build that I wanted to keep tabs on as we head into 2.2 and beyond. Enjoy!

As far as I know this build was orignally put forth by Malakai, a user on the official Diablo 3 forums. His adventures in Greater rifts with this build in patch 2.1.2 are noted here.

Credit for build to Malakai. Check out his youtube channel here for other build suggestions. Credit for video to German player Ravolos. His video is from patch 2.1.2.

I've included the old blackthorne's // aughilds setup with variations of relevant adequate items. Other relevant gems were Mirinae, Wreath of Lightning.

Malakai's last comment on the build:

I'm going to update what I think is the best setup for Static Discharge after some findings:
  • Head - Storm Crow (+Lightning, INT, CC, +AT, single resist)
  • Shoulder - Asheara's or Firebird's (INT, VIT, AR, Area Damage
  • Chest - Tal Rasha (INT, VIT, IAS, Armor, 3x Sockets, single resist or Ranged Reduction)
  • Gloves - Asheara's or Firebird's (INT, IAS, CHD, CC, single resist)
  • Bracer - Ancient Parthan Defenders (+Lightning, INT, VIT, CC, single resist or Ranged Reduction)
  • Belt - Thundergod's Vigor (+Lightning, INT, VIT, AR)
  • Pants - Cain's (INT, VIT, Armor, 2x Sockets, single resist)
  • Boots - Cain's (INT, VIT, AR, +AT)
  • Amulet - Tal Rasha (INT, CHD, CC, Socket, single resist, Ranged Reduction)
  • Ring 1 - Halo (INT, CHD, CC, Socket, single resist)
  • Ring 2 - Unity (INT, CC, +Elite, Socket, single resist)
  • Weapon - Fulminator (Fire or Cold damage range, %damage, INT, Area Damage, Socket)
  • Source - Tal Rasha (INT, Area Damage, CC, +AT)
  • Gems - Bane of the Trapped, Molten Wildebeest's Gizzard, and Esoteric Alteration
So yea... Ancient Parthan Defenders works with Freezes, and combo'ed with Halo it's pretty insane mitigation when you herd a ton of mobs together. Using Cold Snap ensures pretty much perma-freeze on most things if you do it right. And since you're herding so many mobs, Fulminator becomes BiS. Imagine 20+ mobs clumped together, each one pulsing the other 19 for around 200% weapon damage every second. Now imagine 30+ mobs, which is pretty easy to do. 6000% weapon damage a second pretty much. Yea, it's gets pretty crazy, and thanks to Halo + APD it's easy to survive it. And since you're herding so much, Area Damage becomes a ridiculously good DPS stat.

3p Tal Rasha is mostly there for the +2 AP per second. At the 1.82 breakpoint, you can't sustain on a single target (meaning Rift Guardian) with just MW: Conduit. You need either an APoC roll (which is too costly to pick up IMO), or you need +AP from either Tal's, Astral Presence, or Arcanot. Tal's is the best place to get it because the other options require you to give up too much (a damage related passive or Sparkflint). Dropping a breakpoint is NOT an option IMO.

2p Cain's is there for the IAS set bonus to help reach the 1.82 breakpoint.

2p Asheara's or Firebirds for either 100 AR or 500 INT (which is 50 AR, too).

The setup is light on +Elite damage, and since Fulminator doesn't work on single targets, most Rift Guardian fights are going to be long. You should be herding like crazy during the Rift itself, though, so you should be able to make enough time that way. We'll have to see, though. I don't have all of the gear quite yet on my Seasonal character, so she's only able to do GR39 as Lightning so far. Once I get an Ancient Fulminator all gifted up, I should see some pretty huge gains. Even just getting a gift for my current Ancient Thunderfury should push me up quite a bit.

Biggest thing you should take away from this is Ancient Parthan Defenders + Halo + Cold Snap = God Mode. And not just for Lightning builds. Works very well for Fire based FB channeled and/or Woh builds, too.
