All Gear (accumulated over many many hours of playing) can be seen at https://maxroll.gg/d3planner/715009835. Cooldown reduction and resource cost reduction are critical for this build to stay ahead of the curve whilst in a group.

I recently switched out my Ring of the Zodiac for a Stone of Jordan to get the +30% damage bonus against Elites and it paid off hugely for group play since most decent groups don't usually bother with trash. In a group, progression is almost always faster when focusing on elite packs and ignoring trash. Add the 8% Elite Dmg bonus to one (or both) or your one handed weapons to get up to +46% Elite Dmg with these items but in all honesty this is difficult without tons of RCR which will cost you CDR, which is non optimal IMO.

Since this build focuses on Elites you really want to take 'Serenity', ascension. If your group is fighting a large mob of elites for long they will start spamming lasers, lightning and other deadly countermeasures. Serenity ascension provides 4 seconds of invulnerability so you can drop your COE cold cycle nuke without dying and this is very effective at 'sealing the deal' to end a fight a half minute or so before it would have otherwise. This setup also adds a 30% boost against the RG, which might make the difference if the timer gets down to the wire..

Also consider swapping Seize the Initiative skill for Momentum if you can roll really high CDR/RCR. (over 50% CDR + over 40% RCR at a minimum).

The chief takeaway for me is that the Stone of Jordan makes the COE cold cycle up to 30
% more damaging to elites than it already is (which is considerable), so if you put together the right gear and get your timing right, I think you'll be quite impressed. As far as I'm concerned, it is these types of discoveries that keep me coming back (it is quite an ancient game after all).

This strategy is highly recommended for NON SEASONAL group play, especially given the declining role of the Z-monk over the past couple years.

NOTE

If you have the Paragon Points to spare, dump a few hundred into Vitality and swap out Bane of the Powerful for Molten Widebeest's Gizzard. This will give you +45% damage to Elites, (as well as +20% overall damage when activated), which will explode packs of Elites like tomatoes if you can manage the timing. Definitely glass cannon but also definitely worth it if you are nimble enough to pull it off.

Build Guide

FWIW, Flawless Topaz goes in Helm for 12.5% RCR and Flawless Emeralds on Torso, Pants and each weapon to add Dexterity and +130% critical hit damage per slotted weapon.

I didn't feel like filling out every single stat above so for anyone that cares you can see the exact build at https://maxroll.gg/d3planner/715009835

In addition to the Stone of Jordan / COE cold cycle / Serenity Ascension synergy described above in the item build, consider taking the Guardian's Path skill to help avoid getting hit, which will help keep your Squirts Necklace stacks up, which can very significantly boost damage. Also, the Molten Wildebeests Gizzard legendary will not generate a new shield when you are hit more than once every 4 seconds so the Guardian's Path helps to prevent that issue.

Finally, consider equipping an Echoing Fury since slaying enemies with it 'engulfs the wielder into a Frenzy' I have no idea exactly how much this translates to actual damage but it seems like a good bit, in fact a good bit more than the popular 'Max out Cold Skills Damage on items' trend that I see many Monks use to great effect. While the 'Cold Skills' option seems like a good one, I've just had much better luck with a well rolled Echoing Fury, which has been my favorite single hand Monk weapon for well over a year now.
