I'm not very good at video games. I was pulling 10k as a SP in level 85 WoW dungeons, suck at halo, and am the smashed bro in brawl. I gotta say I rolled through normal as a Wizard solo and I can tell you why. In the beginning of the game your most powerful attacks are all melee(ex:Frost Nova and Wave of Force). While this changes later on it places you in a melee playstyle that cannot be mimicked later on. The way to play the Wizard is the opposite of how they set you up in the beginning. You need to be agile and ready to get out of the way of the attacks, even more so the tips by Jay Wilson of teleport and Slot time are HORRIBLE for normal. In normal you don't have any of the proper runes that makes those viable. If you want to succeed as a Wizard you need to experiment as much as possible. It'll teach you what moves work with wizard and what don't. If you need inspiration just check out who got the inferno first contest on this website, a SOLO wizard. Wizard isn't bad there's just a learning curve.
I agree with this article/comments- i am in Nightmare difficulty now and normal was pretty easy- since then i have had to experiment heaps as Wizz with some terrible builds and have ended up with hydras/blizz/generally icy build that works quite well.... still experimenting.... In groups the reduced arcane enery rune with meteor works well with a barb holding the mobs and a bit of ice going on... for now... I'm expecting to continue to experiment...
To be honest, it's really hard for anyone to say what's too strong and what's too weak until a lot of great builds have been mapped out and tried out with the appropriate gear - something which will take weeks, possibly months.

Why are you talking about normal mode? No one is saying that the Wiz is underpowered in terms of normal mode. Normal mode is faceroll for every class.
I don't actually think that the Wiz is underpowered at all (Energy Armor -> Force Armor anyone?), but to tell people that a class is just fine when you have only played through the easiest, casual-aimed difficulty is preposterous. How could you possibly know? You don't even have access to half the abilities, you have faced nothing that can 1/2 shot you, you can essentially tank mobs without fear of dying with little need to kite, and you're going to tell people in Hell/Inferno that
they're complaining about nothing? Yeah, ok.
And on a side note.... 10k in cata dungeons on level 85? How is that even possible? I was doing 10k as soon as I hit 81-82 in those dungeons....
With that build I just destroyed everything that came at me except for molten + jailer (shield) mobs. Everything else is a walk in the park. Lay down a hydra for passive damage, start electrocuting the hell out of everything while pumping out (very strong) arcane orbs, and use wave/frost nova when needed (or wave to just clear out a ton of mobs instantly).
You *will* need energy armor later on, but for NM you really don't but for a few specific circumstances.

At that point in NM I was using this build iirc: http://us.battle.net...SYdR!YcV!aaZZab
