If it's removed it should be replaced with something better, because the stat point system is flawed. With the new rune mechanic you can now customize the way a skill works. It certaintly looked more interesting than a stat point system but unless they put some serious depth into that, it probably won't be enough to fill the void that removing stat points would create.
I don't think they will scrap this aspect of the game. Unless they are going to really focus on the re-specing aspect and include stat re-specing as part of it. Meaning that you have to earn the right to re-spec your stats, which I don't think will be bad at all.
I think this aspect of the game is really a vital part, because in reality (Diablo reality) if a Wizard decides to give up on his teachings, grab a sword and head out to kill... it's really their choice and I am sure that along the way they will gain strength and vitality as opposed to energy!

Behold, the lamest addition to Diablo 3 yet. Expect lamer and lamer.
In Diablo 2, Dexterity and Energy were useless, and the only thing Strength was used for was to wear equipment...The rest went into Vitality.
Yes, it would be better if we could somehow balance these attributes and customize it to our own, but I think the change is for the better.
Now you can customize your skills to a far and more efficient degree than D2. In Diablo 2, you would only use a handful of skills, but in D3 with the inclusion of Skill Runes, the possibilities are endless.
I'm not talking about the skill runes, which can be just as annoying as VItality pumping if used properly, you guys just get too caught up in the moment, and blindly trust in Blizzard. Look, they're fucking great and all, I just wish they start doing shit that most people like. You needed strength to hold equipment, and to pump damage. Dexterity to increase chance of hitting, and chance of blocking. Energy wasn't useless. None of them were, are you nuts?

Maybe it was just me then, lol. My 98 Sorc was almost ALL Vitality and I never put ANY in Energy and yet my mana recharge rate was through the roof--given because of the items, of course.
I never found a need for Dexterity or Strength either, as I had a Bowazon and a Barbarian respectively. It always went into Vitality.
Edit - Towards endgame I was almost 100% PvP, so I did customize my stuff so it would fair well with PvP :).
Yeah pretty much energy WAS useless. And if you pump vitality you get an immediate gain but then you probably won't be able to wear gear with Str and Dex reqs. Thus limiting you forever in what you can wear. This way things will be balanced better and you will be able to always experiment with gear, swap gear with other pieces, etc, etc. More diversity, less limits, less imbalancement.
Damn I don't even know what to say about this. This blows my mind and not in a good way. I always liked the fact that I could use charms and gear bonuses to give me the strength needed to wear my gear so I could pump my vita up. I always thought it was great to mow down hordes of monsters while some kid in the back is hollering "Where is your gear? Are you naked?" It was always a challenge to squeeze every last bit of strength from charms and such to make my toon fully strength glitched. I sacrificed precious inventory space to make my builds happen. I guess on the bright side now I can just load up on mf charms(if they even exist in d3) and mow through the hordes while Blizzard tells me what items I should wear. Pitiful what this game is becoming. Next up...auto skill distribution. This is a bad bad thing. I am having trouble seeing the positives of this system.

The blind mind's eye replies with a sigh and a tear of contempt for those who see the world as it truly is.
Ok it is becoming extremely obvious that any of you who like auto stats and say it went to all vita beside enough str and dex werent good at diablo and couldn't make your own builds and required someone to make a build for you. Ever play a zon? Did you get enough str and dex to use gear then all vita? Guarantee you would get stomped to the ground by any decent zon with above average dex buddy. And how about a BvB? Did he get enough str and dex for equip then all vita? Only if he wanted to get trashed. Yea you got alot of life but you do no damage and can't hit for shit, this auto stat crap is gonna totally destroy all the classes. You are gonna be limited to a one type class, no more BvB builds no more BvA builds no more caster killers no more uniqueness, its all the same "Barbarian goes smash!" "Wizard goes zoom!" "Witch Doctor goes gee I don't belong in D2"
Ritual has a point... it seems that a good number of diablo fans are more happy to latch onto small changes in what they're used to from Diablo II and cry about them all day- rather than embracing the evolution of the game in a positive light.
I agree dude...Diablo III is going to be ownage- I have no issues with what I've seen thus far- it all speaks towards the creation of a sound and interesting gameplay experience...I DO NOT want the same shit I've played before- i want to be challenged with something different.
Thats perfect! There are plenty of other franchises out there you can try good luck
Sorry to inform you that Diablo III is not Diablo II The point i was trying to make Im looking forward to a different game but not going to bash it for being similar or dissimilar to Diablo II...
Once again point proven you guys sucked or still do suck at Diablo. Blizzards good reason is they want everyone unique so they limit your customization? Good job there buddy! They are doing nothing with auto stats but making every wizard only energy, every barbarian only str, every withdoctor only gay. You join a game go to PvP see a wizard what do you know is gonna happen? Hes gonna be all energy and have so and so amount of life or close to it, go to a game and see a barbarian what do you see? He has so and so amount of life and has this much strength. Its HORRIBLE people...how do you not see this? Their skill system will fall. If they use runes to make your skills better its gonna be manipulated and copied a million times over, do you have the choice to choose and pick which ones to use yea theres your customization I guess, doesn't change fact that 90% of those runes will probably be useless and pathetic just like 90% of the skills will be and it is a proven fact that more then half the skills they give you become useless wether they want to admit that or not.

Speculation and random hating...
First off- blizzard has stated that the focus of this game would be for PvE mainly and PvP was not even put on the table as a valid point of discussion thus far... so if you haven't being paying attention - welcome to Diablo III - maybe now the stat thing makes more sense to you. So before saying anyone sucks at the game...I would like to tell you that you suck at having heard of the information thus far, and at looking at the bigger picture...
Saying the skill system will fail...on what basis? You have 3 options of runes to add to your spell- some for aoe some for other aspects- different people will choose different runes for different effects- hence the differentiation. Oh and if it wasn't different enough...the runes come randomly like the spellbooks did in D1...
Moreover, this is all temporary- they're sharing concepts with us. There's no need to be psychoticly judgemental and being a doomsayer for the game without actually seeing how things progress. Be at least a bit neutral before being so blindly hateful of the direction things are going...
