No, they aren't. If you knew your lore and diablo literature, you would know better than to say such an ignorant thing.
Which Doctors practice: Necromancy
therefore they are:
Necromancers
I don't think you can really apply the old lore to new lore in this case. Considering what we know so far, I don't think Blizzard is ultimately concerned with "old" Diablo lore. This is a new game with new concepts and story lines.
im willing to bet we are going to see more than one class that breaks the mold of d1 and d2 traditional classes as we know it... my jaw dropped as soon as i saw the which doctor. honestly if it was just another same old same old d2 necro i wouldn't have been as impressed with the direction the game is going
To me they have similar skills, but the Witch Doctor is more like a hybrid Druid\Necromancer.
Here's my real concern, and Blizzard team, I do hope you view these forums from time to time:
Diablo is set in a Dark fantasy world. It's style has been successful because of the gothic, predominantly western european medieval environments. The Witch Doctor is not dark, gothic, or anywhere remotely close to the traditional European medieval style which made Diablo so creepy-good. Why not just give us "Tanto of the American Indian Hunters", or "Xerxes and his Persian Immortals"? All the necro-haters don't care right now, but wait until the sorcerer\sorceress is replaced by the "Australian Aboriginal Shamman".
Obviously I like history and diverse cultures, but the Witch Doctor is a very contrived class targeted at one ethic and cultural group based on the real earth. What about basing characters on the Diablo books and lore? Last I checked, Sanctuary doesn't have America, Persia, or Australia - or Africa. Keep it that way.
All I'm saying is, don't sacrifice the successful feel of the previous games for a couple of flashy sounding classes.

I think you're taking it to the extreme here. The whole of Act3 in D2 is contradictory to what you are saying. It's absolutely plausible to introduce a class like the which doctor to the story line.
Also I'm not hating on necros. They are my favorite class next to the assassin. Kudos to blizzard for going out side the box on this one. I think it's better over all for the game, rather than giving us d2 redone with better graphics

True enough. Extremities are useful in making points.
I completely agree - but the whole of Act3 in D2 was my least favorite part of all the games. It lost all of the horror effect of the claustrophobic dungeons and scary fields filled with Carver sacrifices - Act3 was very linear. Obviously, my bias is towards the original Diablo offering, so take it with a grain of salt.
The point of this topic is for classes we want, and I have to go with classes that stay to "the spirit of Diablo". True, it is plausible to add the WD, but IMO it dilutes the creep factor of the game.
I'd much rather see a demonic or fallen-angel-type class.
Or technically, with the advent of the new physics, how about a brawler character that uses bodies as throwable objects or usable in moves - perhaps a giant.
Thought I would post my idea of a Demon- Summoning character class here.
Demomancer Skill Tree 1- Demonology (Summons Basic Demons, Future Skills will allow you to transform the basic summons into more powerful demons. Would probably include passive skills to increase the power and durability of the basic and transformed demons.) Skill Tree 2- Shapeshifting (Allows the hero to transform into a demon and learn ability that can be used in those forms.) Skill Tree 3- Curses (Same idea as the Necromancers skill tree.)
uhhh.... No all time favorite character paladin!? with pure offensive skills!!! hehe D: please tell me theres paladin there... witch doctor character class is cool though powerful... but paladin is much powerful!!! XD
err... angel character class is good though... Like archangel tyrael... and vamp class too with life steal capabilities ...
how about Diablo 4!? heaven and hell collides!? how about that diablo creator? hehehe
i got many ideas for you guys.... about this Coolest game!!! XD or how about making it an online game?
Like Joecatty said, there is only so many spots for a new class, the summoner spot is taken by the WD and the brawler by the Barbarian. There will be one more caster class and 1 more mele class to preserve balance. I am sorry that the Necro wont be in the game, it is a devastating disappointment on my side especially since he was literally replaced by a class who does not fit the lore of the game.
Blizzard made one of the most popular games in the world called Diablo II and with only so many characters no matter what they do someone will be disappointed. I do not blame them for removing the necro, a couple of classes have to go but for him to be replaced by a WD, they could have tried harder.
I do like games that think outside the box, they tend to be mildly more interesting but in this case blizzard did not look outside the box, in fact it looked into an already opened box called WoW.
Five character classes will be included in the game, two of which, the barbarian and witch doctor, were revealed when the game was announced at the 2008 Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational. The other classes will be announced at a later date.

Thats all i needed to know.
They did. The class is called the Which Doctor
it's too early to say what role they will play really

I would love to see a Mimicer, something that absorbs mobs attacks and uses them against them.
