(This NO LONGER WORKS as the unid exploit has been fixed. If you somehow know how to manually obtain item code, this may still be possible)
Now lots of people are aware of said unid exploit and how to use it to view item stats b4 iding. What you may not be aware of is the part after the numbers
say I have an item, a flawless emerald, and you are looking at it's code, should look something like
?HItem:(numbers):(numbers):|h[{c:ffffffff}Flawless Emerald{/c}]|h
usually you'd use the numbers to determine the item's stats (obv impossible in this case)
but that got boring pretty fast, so I started playing around
it is possible to remove the square brackets [] and have the item link still work
it is possible to change the item's name in the link
it is possible to change the values of x (using hexadecimal) in c:ffxxxxxx to get varied colours (iirrggbb)
example, if I took my emerald:
?HItem:(numbers):(numbers):|h[{c:ffffffff}Flawless Emerald{/c}]|h
and made it look like:
?HItem:(numbers):(numbers):|h{c:ffff0000}hai{/c}|h
replace the question mark with a line bracket |, and voila, hai in red text, still clickable to a flawless emerald once sent to chat
now go forth and abuse the rainbow!
WARNING: I have been muted several times doing this under 'spam' only to have it removed after opening a ticket with blizzard; I wouldn't suggest doing this if you have numerous violations against your account already, as this could tip the scales against your favour
edit - made code examples look more similar to what actually is seen
While not something I would consider ban-worthy, you can be sure thing isn't something that's going to get you on the nice list at Blizzard - especially if you're doing it on the regular and in an annoying manner (which is probably every time you do it). The other risk you run here is when done improperly, you can crash yours or others' clients, which will get someone's attention in a bad way.
tl;dr - don't mess around with this unless you're prepared for the consequences.
I thought this was changed a couple patches ago to not work anymore. Have you tried it recently? Does it work just like you said in the OP?
while simply adding {c:ffrrggbb}blah{/c} to alter text colour has been fixed, items still remain colourful (obviously)
this works until they fix the unid exploit or any other way to get into item code manually

ya, that's why I added warning =P
unless you are actually making your own items, this should never crash clients (except your own if you do it wrong); I'm using actual in game items and not altering any of their physical code other than colours, so the game always has something to look for

If it still works, I'll let this open for discussion, if it's not I'll close it to not cause others to waste their time

done by {c:ffff0000}W{/c}{c:ffff5500}e{/c} etc.
