Is it against the Diablo 3 TOS to be doing a in-game item/gold giveaway outside of Diablo 3, like on a forum post? Reason I'm asking is, I've seen people's item-giveaway threads closed on the official forum.
I read this "You are not allowed to sell, trade or somehow transfer Loot, characters, or any other Diablo content outside of Diablo or the Auction House." But I'm still very confused.
I guess they only support trading within the game. Like if someone wants to give you something in the game that should be fine but talking about it on the official forums and then going in game to do it isn't. It's not the action I guess but the actual discussion of it?

What if I talked about it on a non-official forum like diablofans?
Pretty sure it's selling items or gold for money that's against the ToU. Otherwise I don't figure they'd have a Trading subforum on their official forums.

This!
Thirded.
You'll be fine to promote an item give away in Diablo as long as the means of obtaining the item doesn't break the Diablo TOS/EULA. So if you are just promoting a website, post in a thread (similar to how MMOC does for WoW items sometimes) you'll be fine.
C. Virtual Items. Blizzard owns, has licensed, or otherwise has rights to all of the content that appear in the Service or the Games. You agree that, except as set forth in a Game EULA, you have no right or title in or to any such content, including without limitation the virtual goods or currency appearing or originating in any Game, or any other attributes associated with the Account or stored on the Service.
Blizzard does not recognize any purported transfers of virtual property executed outside of a Game, or the purported sale, gift or trade in the “real world” of anything that appears or originates in a Game, unless such transfer is made using a marketplace explicitly authorized or administered by Blizzard, including without limitation, the Diablo III Real Money Auction House."

So it's okay to trade things off the game for gold or whatever. But when you trade for money it's against the ToU.
And no we don't allow real money trading here posting RMAH trades will be fine though when the RMAH launches.

Then the other link seems to be talking about its against the ToU to buy or sell anything for real money outside of the RMAH.
