It's not a failure to understand on our parts, it's a complete failure of communication on theirs. They release a beta in September of last year, after saying all year that they're still planning on getting the game out before the end of 2011, and saying that they anticipate that his beta would be comparatively short to their other ones etc. Then out of the blue they push it back with the tantalizing promise of "early 2012". All the while, adoring fans are getting the shaft by both Blizzard's poor understanding of how to set and follow a deadline, and their inability to effectively communicate with customers as to why their product isn't in their hands already.
This game has been in development for at least five, if not six years or longer. Do you have any idea how many successful games from lesser companies have come out in that time span? Not to mention 3 WoW expansions?
So yes, at this point, "as soon as possible" needs to start meaning what that customers and fans want it to, not what the company who has already been developing a game for double if not triple what the development cycle of a game thinks it should be. End of story.
We're all entitled to our own opinions, right? You want the game out NOW. And from a certain perspective, so do I. But if Blizzard decides to wait a bit longer, it won't be the end of the world. I have other concerns to keep me occupied until then. As good as the series has been over the past 15 years or so, it's not the end-all be-all of our existence.
I'll say again : Blizzard can (and should) take as long as they must before releasing Diablo III in order to make it a success.
Or has everyone forgotten the early release disaster that was Windows 98? That's the kind of thing that happens when too many "enhancements" are made to a piece of computer software and is released too soon. Was is not only a few months after the initial Windows 98 release that Microsoft released Windows 98SE that fixed all the countless problems of Windows 98?
The point I'm trying to make is that if Blizzard folds and starts listening to the fans with regard to a release date, then Diablo III is going to be a disaster. And if that happens, then most (if not all) of the fans wanting it right now will once again be bitching, but not because of the game being late, but because it is rubbish due to an early release.
Unlike countless other titles (such as "Call Of Duty", the "Tomb Raider" series, Sims or "Crysis" to name a few) for which I paid good money, played to completion in a few days, and now the boxes are collecting dust on a shelf, never to be played again. I have been playing Diablo II for now just over ten years, and expect then same from Diablo III.
Everyone just needs to take a deep breath and calm down a little. Diablo III will get here when Blizzard is sure the game is good enough for people to continue playing for the next then years!

Peter Alexander DzomlijaDo you hear, huh? The Alpha and The Omega? Death and Rebirth? And as you die, so shall I be Reborn...
I don't really care when the game come comes out, but I would like the announcement of the release to come as soon as possible to maybe give me time to better organize my schedule.

I guess you're smarter than Bethesda than, as they announced Skyrim December of 2010, and it came out 11/11/2011. Then again, setting dates and letting people plan around your schedules all sound like bad ideas I guess? Hmm...
i really dunno what it has to do with the topic ... its not about how the company set its own dates, its about ... read OP once again. also blizzard is not bethesda.
It has absolutey everything to do with the topic, and I was responding to someone who said it's not wise to announce big releases too early by showing a major example of a major company that gave people a huge amount of notice and then delivered their product on time, so yes it is okay to set a release date far in advance then stick to it. And what does Bethesda not being Blizzard have to do with ANYTHING. ANYTHING?!?!? They're both major companies, so you dont' have a point. Good try.
I'd rather have a release date now and at least have something to look forward to. As it is now, we just have no idea... that is way worse for me than KNOWING but having to wait.
Lets say, in theory, the release date is June 11th (I just picked my birthday, this is all hypothetical).
Would you rather have the release date be announced now, knowing you'd have to wait 5 and 1/2 months for it to come out OR Have the release date announced June 1st and have to wait 10 days?
I personally would rather wait until June 1st and only have to wait 10 days. Having an official release date that is 5 months away would be brutal.
Edit: Lets make the 2nd option May 25th so that everyone has at least 2 weeks notice to put their vacation time in for work.. =)
I think I would rather have have it announced 10 days prior. As the excitement would be more intense over that short time, rather than have it diluted over a long time. I've been waiting eagerly for the game since it was announced, watching it like a hawk. What's another handful of months?

From Jay's last post keeping us updated with what they've been working on, I can't possible see them releasing it anytime before April.
But as mentioned by others, I too will be buying a new computer for D3, and it would be nice to know when the game is coming out so I can make plans around it.

the post from jay was from stuff that was already 100% done. implemented in patch 10, and patch 11 to fix issues with it. they've been "working on runestones" since the beginning of the beta so thats the only thing in that write up that you could get a 'delay' out of it. considering they've omitted a bunch of features and removed stuff to quote "get to a solid release date and get it into your hands". sounds more like its going to be released much sooner then everyone thinks

I want the date now. This helps me with bigger future projects like moving, job etc.
