I'm not sure whether this has been mentioned yet but when Diablo and Diablo 2 came out we were still CRT monitors. I recently started using a CRT monitor as a second screen and noticed that color is much harder to see. Everything looks greyer and darker. Diablo and Diablo 2 look much more colorful using LCD screens. In my view if we can have the colour adding to the atmosphere of the game why not?
How about everyone actually pay attention to the fact that blizzard has already taken in fan-feedback from both sides of the argument.
I doubt blizzard will say "hmmmn, lets choose the petitioners over everyone else and make the game exactly as they say."
Nor will blizzard say "You know what? Lets completely ignore all of the petitioners."
The final product will naturally be a more gritty, graphically polished game. It should also be a game full of bright and vibrant locations for variety, but now blizzard will make sure they don't forget to implement the dark, gritty, gothic enviornments that the petitioners want.
The end result should be an artistically balanced game with a multitude of enviornments. More variety, ranging from bright vibrant fields down into the grittiest, bloodsoaked gothic dungeons. Maybe some dungeons will naturally be brighter than others and some outdoor fields may naturally be darker than others.
That is what you should look forward to in Diablo 3
Hey woah woah there buddy, what's all this talk about making both sides happy... That's not how it works here. You either make one side happy or neither side happy. Got that?

LOTOR is known for beautiful landscapes. Tolkein painted a picture of the world he created, and it was beautiful. Very little of that world is actually dark.
What has been painted for us in Diablo has been a dark world filled with dark things. What we have seen in Diablo 3 is not dark, including a dungeon that is SUPPOSED TO BE DARK... according to Deckard Cain himself.
What we saw was not dark. Not at all. The entire Dungeon was glowing with a blueish-green glow.
Right, this is great. The thing he seems to be forgetting is that Diablo 2 took place outside more than it did inside. 4/5ths of the action was outside. Diablo 2 was STILL dark, not in actual darkness but in mood and feeling.
Diablo 3 does not depict that mood and feeling. This troubles me when they have been quoted as having said "We want dark to be a mood and not a color." Act 1 in Diablo 2 depicted dark as a mood without actually being dark.
Color? K. We get it. You guys like color. I like color. I prefer to play games like Super Mario Galaxy over Gears of War. I don't, however, like to play games that are colorful just to be colorful or dark just to be dark. The REASON that Diablo 1 and 2 were dark games (in mood) were because it fit. It genuinely fit.
The mood set for us in Diablo 3 is not dark. Not at all. If this is the very first thing we see when we enter the game, the mood will not be dark.
Diablo 1. First thing we see? A dead tree. We walk a bit and we see a dying man in a pool of blood.
Diablo 2. First thing we see? Dead grass, a rogue encampment. We walk out, first place we find? Den of Evil.
Diablo 3. First thing we see? A polished and new cathedral (doesn't make sense, doesn't match the concept art, doesn't fit the lore, doesn't match what Deckard Cain said about the place) that is glowing with a blueish-green glow. It isn't dark like Deckard Cain mentioned.
No arguments here. The textures are fine. Maybe a little more detail, but stuff like that comes with development time. Everyone understands this.
What we don't understand are:
Color and theme choices
Glowing dungeons
I'm SO glad they are focusing on the gameplay first. Although I'm firm in my belief that the game needs to be darker in mood from the VERY beginning, I'd much rather have a game that plays well than more mood.
One thing I don't think Blizzard understands is that they already have a series that is bright and vibrant. They have another series that is an inbetween (starcraft) and they have this series that is incredibly dark and morbid. To many of us, it appears as if they have lost sight of this and it's a shame.
Statistically speaking, less than 50,000 people cared enough about the art direction to sign a petition. Judging from the fact that the Diablo series has sold millions of copies, I'd be willing to bet that 50,000 wouldn't put much of a dent in the sales of D3, should it sell as many. I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that it will sell even more than its predecessors. Sucks for you guys if you're willing to let such a meager thing have priority over gameplay. For shame.

So you would play Diablo if they did it entirely in pastels, replaced all the heroes with cute woodland creatures so long as it had the name Diablo and good gameplay? You're a consumer whore.
Also, your knowledge of statistics is out of date. Go back to high school.
50k people signed a petition, let's say five million people did actually play D2. How many of that five million do you suppose have not heard of the petition?
Btw about the color. I just noticed yesterday when I finally got d2 working in full screen. I saw that there was somewhat a lot of green glow and green mist in the Pandemonium Fortress.. to create the mood?:)
Btw any of you recently played d2 with voodoo graphics card? I had that in the old days and I remember when you were able to play with glide the game had a lot richer colors and lightning. I do have the glide patch atm but it feels like its not the same. Without glide the game looks very rough and dark.
For me there isn't any green glow... The only glow I have is between the places where Halbu and Jamella and the place where Tyrael and Cain are. And that's more of like a blue-hued glow.
I'm really glad they can justify their choice, it makes me even more happy that they went down this line as it shows they've clearly thought it out.
I agree. Good job Blizzard, I look forward to playing it!

Petitions are bogus and invalid, when anyone can sign up multiple times using fake names. The end result is that valid concerns fail to get heard, when drowned out like this.

Talk about melodramatic exageration.
Your petition number is bogus. Anyone can sign it multiple times even, using fake names.

Discussed that already. If a Diablo fan did not heard about the petition he's not a Diablo fan.
Well, they changed the genre of Fallout. Diablo III, last time I checked, all they did is switch to 3D... So, if people don't at all check for DIII that's fine. It may also mean they are content with what Blizzard would give them.

It's about colour being used properly.

My number of people that played D2 was bogus as well.

I can admit to many game series I have been a fan of that I just don't check up on.
Fallout 3 being an example, because it's Oblivion 2.
