You know, Diablo is a Hack&Slash RPG and Baldur's Gate is a CRPG. Should I list all the differences??? These genres hardly have anything in common, Diablo is a clicking game.
I have to agree with Equinox. Sure, they are RPG's per se, but I myself wouldn't put them in the same category. They playing style is so different between them.
However, they are closer related than for example Diablo and C&C
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.

well naturally.

no need to get technical. both are still RPGs. i always tend to gategorise games by their base genre type; RPG, RTS, Fighting, Sport, Racing, action/adventure ... and i guess MMORPG counts as a seperate genre.
hardly anything in common? i always figured that had quite a bit in common not a lot but there are some similarities. both have swords and sorcery, a medieval fantasy setting, a great deep intriguing storyline, interesting NPCs, similar classes, mulptiple chars to choose from, great free to play online multiplayer, good single player, similar enemies but i could be wrong lol
i know gameplay and mechanics wise they are vastly different games. but im not talking about that, im thinking more along the lines of content.

I think I'm going to stick with Diablo 2 LoD. I can't play WoW anymore because I cancelled my account and got bored with it. I might play Need for Speed Carbon too. I just picked that up over the holidays, pretty fun game.
I tried Maplestory darkjay
Have a lvl 12 archer on Windia!!! It's pretty fun but quite monotone, and right now I can either farm way to easy enemies, or struggle to kill hard enemies.

Well, I believe that the major genres are not enough to distinguish games (and you forgot TBS and simulation and FPS!), I stick to the sub-genres. Deus Ex is RPS (Role Play Shooter/Slasher), and Alien Shooter is Hack&Slash (a great game, by the way)...
If those distinctions that you mentioned are enough things to call a game an RPG then heXen is one, because, you know what? It has classes and fantasy setting and storyline, and long lines of text instead of NPC's (considering there is no dialogue in Diablo it makes no difference). Still, heXen is RPS at best, FPS with RPG elements, rather. You are, too, getting technical.
Currently I'm playing NWN 2 / DII / SS 2... enough games to cycle through.
RPG means role-playing game. Now I always though of Baldur's Gate as a prime example of an RPG. You control your own avatar, you make choices and you basically "live" him.
But Diablo? Whopidoo, I have a human that throws out some sentences whenever I kill a boss. Sure, I control only one character, but I don't role-play that character.
Still, there is no better genre to put it in, and so that's where it ends up.

Well, actually, most places Diablo is mentioned as an Action RPG or as a hack&slash or as action-roleplaying... which is enough for me to distinguish one way or the other.

True, but in all magazines and on all large gaming istes it's always FPS, RTS, Sport, RPG or Puzzle etc. So it ends up in RPG, because that is what it is in those options.

ah PhrozenDragon, that was kinda my point before people began to discuss specifics, and what sub genre of whatever games fall into.
so here are some games regardless of the exact genre or sub genre, although most are RPG games in some form or another, and may or may not bear some resemblence to the Diablo series.
