Have been thinking about this more and more. On great thing about D2LOD Ist that the maps are almost always different. Trade off for open world would be that It would probably be the same map every time. What I mean by open world is somthing more like GTA. You can go anywhere , do anything so to speak. One annoying thing Is how the characters movement is limited through out the game. Things like climbing walls, swimming, and jumping should all be added. There should be no place in the game where the unit cannot explore...even to his demise. They will most definatly have a good story line and graphics. Things they should really really fine tune are the environment and how the player interacts with it. I know it would piss people off...but falling through thin ice just to take a short cut should be possible. Weather...and seasons. Another Problem I have is trying to cast my volcaneo about a hundred times before I will work...could be an improvment there.
Ther mercinary should absolutly be able to use all items. Sure, make some bow only or whatever...but things like boots...etc...yea that is just lazy not to include.
Im more concerned with the environmental design. It makes for a more immersive game. Honestly, random deaths would be a riot. Like a random lighting strick. Fallin through ice, off a cliff. Litteraly havin a burning tree fall down on character...could use that to insta kill other creatures too. Thats just me.
jumping/climbing wouldnt suit the Diablo 3 environment. It would have to change the gameplay almost completely (controls fully over keyboard and not mouse, etc). Falling off cliffs would be the same as i mentioned just before. Falling trees and such could work fine the way traps work so no really big deal. But if Diablo 3 is to become a fast, Hack & Slash RPG such things as jumping around etc shouldnt be implemented. First off it would make controls and gameplay as "slow" as WoW (everyone's been complaining about that in these forums) and also major changes on the UI (that i dont expect to be the same, but something similar at least).
lets not get all GTA now shall we, d3 should be a rpg in isometric view, like the first 2 were

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Im all about keeping gameplay as similar as possible to the game Ive come to know and lvoe. LMAO.
You could keep it point and click to do just about anything. Although, there would be problems with people not wanting character to climb...and having it climb. Could be a real annoyiing cause for deaths.
I think it wou ld be cool to make it more open world. Having each area open up as you progressed. The problem with that is how do you regenerate different terrain everytime. Would be a pretty difficult task.
Me, I already have a problem with the keyboard binds. I have not found a good spot for my potions. Quest bind I have totally put on right side of keyboard...my quest screen will never again pop up when makeing a life saving attempt at a gulp. Yes, I died because of that.
A change in gameplay, at least an addition, id like to see worked out would be use of WASD for up, left, down and right. Maybe that should be an option. Im sure folks would want the actual up down l r curssers...but having wasd allows you to bind many close by keys for quick access.

The idea of an open world doesn't necessarily mean that the terrain can't be randomly generated. It would just be more of a task. And possibly a larger world would make it a bit more difficult and the game should be a lot longer, so the task is even longer to generate. But with newer video games, comes newer technology. SO it would be safe to assume that the average computer is powerful enough to handle a little bit of a larger workload.
Climbing, jumping, and swimming is also good. It could lead to more creative level layouts.
You're right about that interactive environment idea. That would be awesome. Perhaps the burning trees could be more like a trap. Like those trap chests that shoot ice and fire balls at you if they make a strange sound. Environment interactivity is something that a lot of games have been shooting for this generation.
Changing seasons would be great for ambience. It could also effect gameplay. For instance, if you're in the Tundra during the summer, thin ice is more present. And perhaps if it's the winter, you have shortened stamina. Those are just two ideas, though.
I think the world should be open, and I agree with muttonchops with the jumping and swimming and such. The world has a defined shape, but you can randomly generate the land within it.
I also like your seasonal idea, jpbc99... That idea could be built upon to form some pretty cool game factors.
i still think jumping/climbing wouldnt be too easy to use (if they want to keep the simple click & kill sort of gameplay). These traps (falling trees etc) together with the new physics engine Blizzard just licenced might come to reality with the next Diablo. But i dont believe season changing would affect something more than atmosphere tbh. What i've also missed from Diablo 1 was the atmosphere the NPCs added. I mean, ok they talked to you in D2 also but in the original they felt more alive. Also some random quest pools would be nice. Never know what will come next! (Anyone remembers Zhar the Mad? ). These tomes about the wars of the past that were spread throughout the dungeons and were read by those who acted for the characters (poor english, sorry bout that) added alot to the atmosphere as well.
