Hey I am a wizard and I struggle to even get past Quest 3 on act 1 inferno. I use the "cookie cutter" solo build of
Frost Nova
Diamond Skin
Energy Armor
Magic Weapin
Shock Pulse
Hydra
I have 27k hp and 17k dps unbuffed. Are they any improvements that I need? Where I should farm, what I should start stacking? What can I do different? Thanks.
You spend no energy, I think it's a little early for anything to be "cookie cutter" but it's fairly common to see blizzard as your attack instead of shock pulse since you don't have any energy spenders.
As far as improvements are concerned, there's no absolute correct answer but you should try to experiment a little with Teleport: Fracture Rune combined with the illusionist passive. I just started doing this two days ago and it's fairly effective and fun. There's no internal cooldown on the passive and in inferno every hit will be more than 15% of your health so teleport is basically spammable while you're in danger and every time you fracture it actually gives you a chance to dps while mobs chase your images. Once they kill your images you take one hit and teleport and now you have more images
I'm regularly starting fights with teleport just for the image spawns because i know when i actually do need a teleport for defense illusionist will pop it up.

I was having the same problem, 50k hp, 21k DPS.
My old build for all of hell was, venom hydra, blizzard, shocking orb + of course, FA, DS, MW
I switched to this build, steam rolled act I in a night.
You run, you spam orb, you run you spam orb, anytime your AP is low, you start firing some Magic Missiles, AP goes back to full, more orbs
On a side note, I'm running around with my magic find gear on in Act I now, my wiz is actually 38k hp and 17k damage, plus almost no resistances and terrible armour rating and I still find it fairly easy doing butcher runs, just watch out for the fire
Hmm you guys are like way better geared than me.
I have 19k HP with 22k DPS unbuffed and I've been killing everything in the map with 90% of elite packs (some elites are just impossible for Wizards)
I'm working on Act 3 Final boss atm in Inferno. I think I need more dps to kill that boss to be honest. Other than that my build has been amazing for running through Act 1~3.
i feel like there is no set cookie cutter spec but there is alot of abilities that synergies together. after changing my gear over twice from the nerfs of force armor and the critty build i decided to just go with what i felt worked, and i think thats the best thing to do act1 inferno is honestly extremely easy and i dont know how people have trouble with it. only pack that was impossible for me were the spiders if they had Fast, firechain or other dumb affixes since they were alrdy insanely fast they zerg u down hard. i was farming act1 inferno when i first started with only like 15000 dps and like 18k life but what i see alot is wizards running with like 200 or lower resistances. i have 400+ and im running glass cannon i would have more. i personally just finished act2 finnally which is a real challenge but i would say just fool around with skills and abilites and really think of how abilities synergies.

I use the same for Solo Act 2, but i think with this build you have to get some more dps for it to work.
When i had pretty much the same stats as you, i used Arcane Orb - tap the source instead of enchant weapon and teleport instead of frostnova.
I just got through Act 1 inferno 2 days ago. I was also struggling with it. It's mostly the gear that you have on you. I use to have about 33k dmg buffed but with about 14k health, 2k armor, 80+ resist all. I get one shot by elites and champion packs. I even had hard time surviving some of the white mobs.
I farmed for about 3 days change my stats into INT > VIT > RESIST ALL. My damage went down to 20k which is a lot, then used the Venom Hydra + Blizzard build to kite. It went smooth and perfect.
Latest stats:
INT = 1592
VIT = 583
Resist All = 385+
I know my post will seem mean to some people, but I am posting my own experience with Inferno Act 1. While I'm way past Act 1 (currently working on Diablo, having killed everything, including Act 4 minibosses), I'd still like to post my stats when I entered and worked on Act 1.
I hit level 60 and killed Hell Diablo with 5.5k dps, around 30 to 35k hp, and entered Inferno. Me and a friend (DH, geared similarly) slowly 2 manned the act. I believe we had issues on the Butcher where we lacked DPS (I was at 11k dps at that point). We had to try really hard to minimize movement, maximize DPS in order to kill him, barely beating the enrage.
People posting with 20-25k saying that they need more gear are wrong. Or we could say, maybe for their skill level, they need more gear.
Your playstyle has a lot more to do than your gear. Poor play and not optimized DPS will lead to elites hitting enrage.
As far as build goes, I suggest the 5 Images, Diamond Skin, Force Armor assuming enough HP, Seeker Magic Missile, then room left for either Venom Hydra, Blizzard, Magic Weapon, Arcane Orb, Desintegrate, Frost Nova, or anything that floats your likes and playstyle.

There's nothing mean in saying the truth. 20-25k DPS means weapons from Inferno A3, i.e. terrible overgear for A1.

i completed act 1 with around 10k hp and 20k buffed dps. lot of kiting with hydra blizzard and shock pulse.
what helped me survive was the fact i had around +1000hp / second regen.
See this is the problem I probably had. I didn't realize wiz required movement speed bonus and THAT much kiting. I was watching Justwait and stayawhileandlisten's streams and they kite for an eternity. Even with my kiting, i'd get champion packs that would either have vortex or just fast and once they got too me, I'd die no matter what.
Im lost on how this wizards get they gear they have, 2/5 set items and 2 or 3 legendaries, its crazy.
I am running http://us.battle.net...XSQj!dYU!bYaZYa
My toon has 42k/22k DPS Self buffed. I am currently about 2/3 through Act2 in Inferno. I opted for some more health as opposed to straight damage for soloing. If I switch to my group DPS set it is ~30K with about 32k health. I kite kill with Orbs and teleport is the best "oh shit" spell I have used to date in D3.
There is a post on this forum about running arcane hydra build that really looks nice for surviving. I can tell you having some kind of set it and forget it spell is sure nice especially on bosses.
I think with the gear available on the AH it is very possible to get some upgrades pretty easily for 20-30k a piece. But then again depending on the build you might want more crit or haste. I personally chose resists and raw stats like Int and Vit when I could find it.
One thing I do recommend is movement/speed increases. Having the ability to get away from mobs is really nice.
One last thing, the only Ledgendary I have found was a polearm, which of course I could not use and the stats were so weak.
They get gear by farming gold and selling items on the AH for gold to purchase better gear. As for surviability nothing really compares to Teleport with Fracture + Illusionist (or Mirror Images depending on your preference) along with some life regen (doesn't have to be a crazy amount). The key is having enough gear to take at least 2 shots, the more the better, before dying.
All defensive skills have a long cd and typically you need them sooner than they are ready. This causes people to use multiple defensive skills to cover that gap which hurts your offense. With Illusionist every time you need it (i.e. you take a hit) your teleport comes off cd and you port away. Fracture is amazing because the images it summons are immune to damage so they tank for the full duration unlike Mirror Images which only have 25% of your max life. When you see you are about to take a hit just jam on your teleport hotkey and you port immediately after taking damage.

Hmm, yes I thought about experimenting with tele and illusionist. Do you happen to know a base amount of vitality that would be needed to tank 2 or 3 hits?

here's my build setup.
http://us.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#aOXlPR!YTd!cYacZb
5 Mirror Images tank everything
Diamond Skin (Crystal Shell)
Magic Weapon (Force)
Familiar (Spark)
Energy Armor (Prismatic)
LMB: Electrocute, Lightning Blast
RMB: Imp. Archon
Passives: Glass Cannon, Galv Ward, Blur (or Paralysis)
And get a nice amount of attack speed.
And yeah, you read that right, Prismatic instead of Force Armor. It may just be me, but i feel like i'm taking less damage...
I don't like leaving or skipping any champion/elite packs.
I SHOULD be able to kill any combination.
At the moment I can't (26k hp, 19k dps buffed armor about 5k and resists around 200).
So now I'm farming diablo and hope that better items drop.
The problem I face now, is what to prioritze. Should I aim for all resist? DPS? Vitality?
Went back to farming diablo after the blog post said inferno gear can drop in act 4 hell.
When i had pretty much the same stats as you, i used Arcane Orb - tap the source instead of enchant weapon and teleport instead of frostnova.
So this is what I'm using in Act 2/3 atm http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#bSRQOX!dYU!bZaZYa
And i used this for Act 1/2 http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/calculator/wizard#bcRQOX!dYU!bYaZYa
But i had to change Shock Pulse to Magic Missile - Charge Blast for Butcher because I couldn't kill with SP.
