Over summer here in 'sunny' queensland we have had crazy rainfall. Above average rainfall is has been all summer and will be up until april(its summer here now btw). Over the last few weeks over 3/4's of the State (which is 1.7million square kilometers) has gone under water. The floods have destroyed many farms, flooded mines and torn appart towns, cities, roads and railways.
Until last night there was no deathtoll until Unfortunatly there was Flash flooding around a town called Toowoomba west of Brisbane up un the mountains. Scientest believe that around 150mm of rain (6 inches) fell in around half an hour, Causing an "inland tsunami". within minutes water roared through the town and down into the valley taking with it cars, trees and even tearing houses out of the ground. Currently 9 people are dead and 59 are missing.
Much of the Rainfall has been in Brisbanes catchement where we have two dams, Summerset, and the big one Wivenhoe. Both these dams are now at 180% capacity and despite officals best attempts to avoid opening all the flood gates, the continuing rain has left them with no choice. The Floodgates being open along with around 200+mm of rain each day and the Inland flood heading down from Toowoomba means that the flood will be worse than the '74 flood.
In 1974 was brisbanes last Flood, The wivenhoe damn was built in the late 70's to stop it from ever happening again(well i got news for ya!).
Unforutnatly its estimated that the Brisbane river will rise 5.5meters in the next 2 days, possibly more. its currently up 2 meters and already roads are cut off all over the city and homes and business are being evacuated. Its estimates that over 6500 homes and business will flood.
Im fine where i am as i live on a hill in the samford valley just outside of brisbane, however the creeks in the village are getting very high and i dont like my chances of getting out tommorow morning.
Good luck to thoes in the flood affected area's!
P.S. I would like to mention that a year or so ago, our combined total in both our dams was 8%, there now 180%
yea my grandma was sittin on the roof of the highest land mass she could find in Brisbane during the peak of the storm. Pretty lucky. though she still doesn't have electricity.
I'm in Brisbane too, and also in a fairly hilly, safe place. But its boring here! I want to be trapped or something! Where is the drama!? There IS a creek with a bridge at the bottom of my little estate, so fingers crossed it will overflow. But I doubt it will happen.
I am in Eatons Hill, thats near Samford, right? Or am I thinking of Samson?
