I primarily play on a wizard on which I have a hard time farming act 3 despite decent but not godly gear. I know what some of you are thinking, "Poor baby, playing the OP class, still can't hack it and want to try monk?" I don't enjoy kiting as a wizard. You can kite stuff around with good resists and armor like I have and spend a ton of time killing everything or you can build like a tank, which is dumb IMO and generally just stand there and nuke them. This of course would require that I swap out most of my gear for the most expensive gear in the game because that's what all wizards are doing now.
In Tryhard's most recent video I see him just plowing through elite packs on his monk with seemingly no effort at all and it prompted me to look a little deeper into it. His gear,( Tryhard's Monk Gear ) is very affordable to me at this time. Some pieces can be picked up for as little as 700K and nothing seems to go over 5m. Way cheaper than the wizard alternative, believe me.
From all the reading that I have been doing it seems that monk is a delicate balance of stats and build. I read about this guy who has awesome resists and armor but no LoH so he gets slaughtered or that guy that has no damage or the other guy that has no resists. If I do this I would want to mirror someone who is plowing through it So my first question is, is Tryhard's setup ideal?
Don't fool yourself. You can't get his gear and do what he does without that spear. That spear is worth 40-80 mil. The rest of it you could probably find pretty cheaply.

I also came from a wizard and made a monk out of pure boredom and Im surprised its doing better in act3 compared to my wizard.
I did some searching on the AH that is similar to his gear and apart from the chest armor, everything else seems to be on the 3~5M range, weps are a bit expensive though.
I too switched from my Wizard (first character to 60) to the Monk and I am enjoying it. I love the Wizard class, but so much of it is see a mob, run away and kite for 3 minutes to kill it. The Monk feels like a Wizard to me, just a bit with the FoT - Thunderclap. Teleporting around in a large pack of monsters and doing a lot of AoE dmg (Cyclone) is the most fun I've had as a melee character.
I too am looking at TryHard's gear and Newtiunplugged's stuff - trying to figure out where to go with my monk to survive. I just made a thread in this forum about the same problem - whats the balance of stats and is there one that is more important than others. I've been struggling to progress and I do have to say that prices on the AH for the gear I see that matches stats of TryHard is very high.
You'll enjoy the monk - once you get to the point you can survive. Especially if you don't like kiting.
I watched that video where that German dude geared up for 60 mil. Very interesting. I was disappointed he went with a shield and I'm surprised he didn't get LoH. With a little shopping and time I could get that gear for a lot less. The question is, would that setup plow through act 3?
I have about 60m to spend. I was going to save it for 1.0.4 to see what changes they make to my witch doctor but the idea of an act 3 farming monk that doesn't take 20 minutes to kill elite packs sounds fun.
I too gave up on my wizard and have now a monk and barb. With my monk I went straight from act 1 inferno all the way to act 3 (where I am stuck now) with out farming.
It is soo much more fun to play a monk than a kiting wizard. Kiting is just lame and you get so bored of dying when the mob is on 3% hp and then coming back to it in full hp.
Monk crit build is fun and amazing. 60 million is over enough. If you can get 2 weapons with sockets, high dex and one with 500+ LOH you will be sorted. Get 700 resists and a helm with crit resists stats and a socket for life %. Quick an easily and you will be sorted.
The weapon really makes the monk and while we can get decent weapons at a reasonable enough price, the ones that really allow you to shine can easily break the bank. I haven't played the wizard much, but my brother has been farming for weeks to get gold and items that will allow him to farm more easily and yet I was able to do the same in far less time with my monk.

A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.
