looks like imma gunna be sucked into yet again another online community to watch for countless hours. I am an old time gamer, counting back all the way to the beginning of ever quest, and quite a few of the original PC platform games. Currently, I am an avid player of WoW, which most likely wont change... but here is my major question...
I have never truly played any of the original diablo games, though I am highly considering it. My question is, even if I opted not to play the original diablo's, would that in a major way impact me if i chose to play Diablo 3 which is looking amazing and I am defintely wanting to play.
... I understand from a lore perspective I will behind, but in terms of game play, enjoyment (as Diablo 3 is the kind of gameplay im all about).
Looking forward to hearing from you, if you have questions just throw them at me.
I guess it could help you know what the game feels like. Although different, I still think the core experience is still there. Otherwise, I don't see why you can't just jump into D3 no problem. I have a problem with playing older games so I would understand why you wouldn't want to. But, also, they are excellent experiences. And, (if you want to get into the lore) there are also books to read if you wish.

Probably not. I suspect much of the community ternimology will be brought along from Diablo II, but that's just take a little while to learn.
That being said, welcome to the community and by all means try out the older games if you want to
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Not to be a Debby Downer (Who the hell says that nowa days? :P) but in my opinion the best of D2 is gone. I played for years upon years, tried to pick it up again recently, and at least for me between the bots, spam bots, and completely lost economy the game isn't what it used to be.
Starting off from D3 will surely leave you off in the lore (which has changed a little over time anyway), but besides that you're not missing out on all too much comparatively. Diablo 3 is looking to bring the Diablo hack and slash gameplay to a whole new light, and depth.
“We act as though comfort and luxury were the chief requirements of life, when all that we need to make us happy is something to be enthusiastic about.” - Albert Einstein
If you play diablo 2 single player then you might experience the play style that d3 seems to be going toward. But online, play revolves around items which grant you the ability to teleport and kill things instantly. D3 is looking to be a much different experience than what most people have had with D2. If you want to know what the game could feel like, play either of the diablo games single player, and then imagine having an online community with you. It's really the only way anymore.
Also, welcome!
