After all this time, I still detest what Blizzard is doing with the art direction.
They say it gets darker later on, but from the screenshots, the areas like King Leoric's tomb which should be really dark still look horribly cartoony.
Am I alone in this?

And that's perfectly fine. No points yet though.

Indeed, they do.

I think they're plenty dark and foreboding, actually. But, after all, beauty (or, in this case, Gothic Supremacy) is in the eye of the beholder.
[They] still look horribly cartoony.
I dunno what you would define as "cartooney." To me, I don't get any sort of vibe because, to me, it still feels "gritty." It's also plenty "dark" for me.
Am I alone in this?
No; A good 65,000 people feel the same way you do, but I'm not one of them. I'm actually quite satisfied.
And, again, it might seem like WoW, but those features are only apparent because they are still images. Once you start playing the game and get really absorbed, these things won't be as prominent. And, also, you can desaturate the colors on your monitor a tad and turn down the brightness to get a "true kvlt" kind of feel.
Again, I respect your opinion as a Diablo Fan. But you're fuckin' wrong.
Well, not actually, but it was fun to say that. Opinions are only that; opinions.
Have a nice day.

I hate the way you cling to ignorance and pass it off as innocence
Diablo II had way more color than Diablo I had. And boy, that game sure looked lame.
I think Diablo III is sporting some really good art. It's a "painted" art style, not a cartoony art style. And we've seen brief glimpses of the game, maybe 2-3%. And it's probably not even polished yet. Lighting effects can play a huge role on the mood of the game.
Wait for the demo in a few months, and you'll have a better idea of how the game looks.
"We couldn't identify the horse postmortem. From our observations, we came to the conclusion that the horse... was just beaten brutally, almost senselessly. We also figured that the horse was well deceased before the initial beating began."

Fair enough. My main gripe with this isn;t the opinion. Heck you can think whatever you like. That's the joy of an opinions. My thing is... no one EVER gives suitable alternatives. Ok, yeas people have taken a few screens into PS and upped contrasts and shifted things to near sepia tone levels. Listen to a few dev panels and they will say why those types of aesthetics simply do not work. Things like juxtaposition and readability being key reasons for not doing it the way some fans felt it should be.
Show me some games you think look leagues above this and then a dialog can begin. Though this conversation has been beaten to death time and time again that I can't even picture something new and insightful being brought forth by renewing it's discussion.
From personal experience, played the Blizzcon 2008 demo. Ive gotta say some of the stuff they had in Old Tristram trumps the heck out of anything gory or dark from Diablo 1 or 2. And that was while playing in a loud, busy convention hall. A place not at all ideal for absorbing the nuances of a spooky game. Yet even there I was yanked into the dark atmosphere.
Here's the thing about turning down saturation, some things should be bright, just not EVERYTHING
areas that should be dark should be close to black not a blue/green
For "cartoony" graphics I think one should go play of the likes of Borderlands, for Diablo 3 however the graphics appear, at least to me, what looks to be what Diablo II would have looked like with the gaps filled in, because looking back now that game was rough and gritty, but it certainly worked with setting an atmosphere, and at that point, Diablo II was shinier than Diablo 1, it is called advancement. I would agree with the needs to play the game, that is certainly where the real feel from the game will come, not some Screen Shot.
True. I always thought they decreased the darkness factor which was there in Diablo 1 when they made D2 but this time, in D3, they totally did away with it. And by darkness i mean the scary factor.
But that necessarily doesn't make the game worse. I really enjoyed playing Etherlords 2 and hell, it had more colors than anyone could ask for.

That's like saying the movie Dirty Harry was better because they failed to realize that you couldn't see ****ing anything without lighting.
I'd also say that the darker parts of Diablo II were exercises in poor lighting, rather than just "artistic style".
It's ok to throw light on what people are doing, especially in a game from this perspective. If you want dark scenes, go play F.E.A.R.
Otherwise, I'd like to have a little faith in their art team's direction.
I don't see any cartoony-ness anywhere, and it doesn't really have much more color than D2.
It looks perfect <3 I couldn't ask for anything better.

Cartoony means over-weight in colors. Diablo 3 is not cartoony.
For those who like cartoon, look at this.

Bingo!
Cartoony is giant bubbleheads, a comic-reference and/or childish-humour.
