Well, I finally created my movie thread, it's for any kind of movies / shows / miniseries in general, whether it came on the big screen or only TV or only Internet, cartoons and anime excluded.
But I really don't want a thread where people come over, say "My favorite movies are A, B, and C", and just leave at that. It's just plain boring, and really doesn't help people much on whether or not would they like that movie. This is a thread for movies that you really like, which you would recommend to other people, and probably movies that you have on DVD / want to have on DVD, or movies that you want to watch again, like, movies that are really memorable for you. It's a form of art, anyway.
So I want you to name your movies and write what do you like about them (certainly not just one movie, or we'll just end up with a lot of people liking 300/StarTrek/Matrix, etc., and those are too famous already, I don't mind, especially with StarTrek, but I want to hear about something else, too), what kind of movie it is, what kind of people may it appeal to, this doesn't mean telling the plot in detail, though (unless the plot doesn't matter), just what the movie is about, whether it's an action-packed movie that fills you with adrenaline or a very sad drama or some philosophical work or a detailed sci-fi world or anything. I would also be very interested to hear about some rare not-very-famous movies/shows, even if it is from 1894 or something, even if it's from Poland, I'm on good terms with oldies and weirdies.
But I guess I'll be ignored for the most part, I don't rememeber people be keen to write big chunks of text... Or reading the big two chunks that I wrote above.
I will post my movies somewhere later, because I'm somewhat busy at the moment.
Boondock Saints: lots of biblical passages and Irish accents. and Billy Connolly as you have never seen him before
Ninja Scroll: landmark anime film, great story.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Stars aligning fragments of the memories
Parallel truth, awaken in translucence
Sealed by this deadened song
Sinking in toneless comatose
Come and tear my skin, fear what's within
Its massive darkness filling my world
Submerged rage writing unspoken words
I really liked the first Blade, but not the other ones. Anyway, my movies (yes, I write LONG, maybe you can read it in parts):
Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997) - this is a very good, sad and goodnatured movie at the same time, it's about two people who had fatal forms of cancer and what did they start doing after they got the news. The movie is German, but I think the original language of it was English. It went pretty well in Europe, and every person that I know that saw that movie loves it, but I heard it didn't go around in USA much and that it is hard to get. Anyway, I watched it many times and I highly recommend it if you never saw it before.
Gattaca (1997) - this movie is set in the era where most people had their genes corrected to avoid diseases and heart risk before they were born. The tagline for the movie is "There is no gene for the human spirit". There is probably a ton of movies about this, but the good thing about this movie is that it is not pessimistic, it doesn't say "a world like that will be oh so bad, and you have to get rid of it". It's more of a realistic drama, it shows how it will/may be if we had a world like that. It is also very atmospheric regarding the world itself, and has a very interesting feel, it's futuristic, and at the same, old fashioned. And the soundtrack is just awesome. If you like realistic movies about human nature, future values and stuff, I'm sure you will like this movie.
LEXX (1997 / 2000-2002) a.k.a. Tales from a Parallel Universe (USA title) - well, I have to mention my favorite, despite the number of rotten tomatoes that were, and still are, thrown at it. It is a Canadian-German co-production with some support from UK. Mostly it's Canadian, but there are some actors from Germany and the DoP and stuff. It had good support in UK, Russia/Ukraine/Bulgaria, Germany, horrible support in US, Canada. This is a miniseries + series, but at the moment I'm refering mostly to the original four movies. Yes, this is probably was the most hated show on television. Most people that watched this said I'm insane totally. In general, it's sci-fi, but the world is, as some guy put it, unwholesome. The show doesn't even have a proper plot or anything, and is hard to follow at times, and when it comes to Season 2 and farther, some scientific stuff starts to unmatch to an extent where it's really hard to keep track of how can it possibly work. "Science is not LEXX's strong point." FarScape (1999) partially duplicated this, which is why these two are often compared, except if FarScape is about the good side of humans, and heroes, LEXX is pretty much about the bad side, and regular cowardly people. And LEXX is a lot less sci-fi, there are no aliens and such. It's an allegory about human dark nature if you ask me, but there are way too many views on what did the creators actually meant.
The reason people hate it is because it's very outrageous and perverted. It's also junky. It actually has pretty good graphical quality compared to most 1997 movies, but at the same time, the budget was $12 million, without a sponsor (the company that did it was the company that produced it), so at times, it looks like someone drew a graphic with a pencil and plasted it on top of the frame, and sometimes some stuff just looks crappy, I wonder if some of it was on purpose. Without joking, %70 of this movie is CGI. Pretty much all of it except the actors, it's all green screen. The actors are quite good for an art-house movie, but they have their problems, some famous ones got invited (Rutger Hauer, Tim Curry, Malcom McDowell, Nigel Bennet), and the roles are a bit weird. There are plenty of goofs, and montage is horrible and very noticeble places, but in general, it looks pretty good, more like a 2000 movie with a low budget than a 1996 movie with a low budget. This is often compared to Red Dwarf / American Red Dwarf, but I never saw those. Otherwise it's compared to FarScape and considered "Star Trek's evil twin". People say it's a parody on all other sci-fi. If you don't like whatever you hear, avoid it, it will only put you into a disgusted mood, this is not the kind of movie that I can recommend lightheartedly, and not the kind of movie that is good for watching with popcorn alongside. If you are looking for true sci-fi, this is not cyberpank. It's outrageous and weird and comical, with an unusual style, and it continually tries to defy and remove any sci-fi cliche or stereotype, there is no other movie/show like it at all. And, no, I'm not a fan of this, just a follower, lexxians scared me away from their fandom, up to the point where I had to dig my original nick into the ground.
I didn't intend all these movies to end up in 1997, lol, I watched Knockin' in 2000 and Gattaca in 2007...
Kill Bill Vol. 1-2 (2003-2004) - this is easily my favorite Tarantino movie. For some reason, it got a lot of negative feedback, but I loved this movie, it's action-packed and surreal, beautifully done and directed. The other Tarantino movie that I like is Pulp Fiction (1994). I just love the phrase "And you will know, that I am the Lord, when I pass my vengeance upon thee." Well, I like Tarantino a lot.
Dragonheart (1996) - this one really appeled to my fantasy side. It is one of the few movies where dragons are portrayed as good during the medieval times, and it's pretty sad, too. The dragon is actually voiced by Sean Connery, and it is a sculpture, not a graphic, so it looks a lot better than all other dragons (Eragon one sucked).
My other favorite movies are old Star Wars, Forrest Gump, and Matrix 1, but I won't write about those since everyone know them already.
Its by David Lynch, maybe you know him as the creator of the serie "Twin Peaks" and the movie "Lost Highway".
Mulholland drive was supposedly to be a serie like Twin Peaks but he didnt get the funds to do so, and i rather glad he didnt (ofcourse i dont know because the serie doesnt exist) because i love the movie.
No... I think I have heard of him, but I never saw any of those, are they worth watching?
Well, I see what you mean, I'm not very happy with the way LEXX evolved past it's original 4 movies (which were just movies, it wasn't a show yet). Making a series after a movie is not always a good idea. In general, series are worse than movies because they keep stretching them and making fillers and they are short...
Hero
Chinese movie, and if you're going to watch it, you HAVE to see it in chinese with subtitles. Watching it with american accents just doesn't cut it.
Anyway, it is set in old China before the country was united. The Emperor of Qin is trying to do just that however, but three assassins are posing a great threat to him. One man however, Nameless (Jet Li), manages to kill the three assassins, and as such is granted an audience with the Emperor. The whole movie is then a retold story, with Nameless first telling his version. The Emperor doesn't believe him though, and so he tells the story in the way he thinks it unfolded. And so it goes on, the story slowly becoming more and more complete as they take turns teling it, until the climactic end.
Memento
This one is about a man who loses his ability to gain new memories. He can only remember things for a few minutes. The last memory he has is seeing his murdered wife, and so he searches for her murderer. The whole story goes backwards, so in a way the viewer experiences the same feeling the protagonist does, in that you know nothing about the past at any time, only the present. And the end is very sudden and unexpected.

I find them worth watching, but they certainly are not for anyones taste.
edit: btw my favorite Tarantino movie is reservoir dogs.
oh and LEXX looks good gonna check it out some more
Sounds right for me.
That is actually one of Tartantino's movies that I did not see yet...
I suppose it would be OK with you, judjing from what kind of movies you like. In any case you feel like watching, just remember that you won't get it on Netflix since the four sagas never came out on DVD... youtube has all of it, though.
To Phrozen
saw them both, I actually just wanted to mention them, great movies.

I love Band of Brothers. Captain Winters and Captain Spears are really great characters. I thought that series was better than Saving Private Ryan, even though one's a movie and one's a series.

I've always been able to appreciate what this movie is about, but at the same time I think it's painfully boring to watch.
Kung Fu Hustle: This is the most absurdly entertaining movie I've seen in a long time. These days, I've come to find extra long fight scenes kind of boring, but this movie pulls all of them off extremely well. I highly recommend this movie to anyone.
Baraka: This movie is essentially a documentary with no words. It's this film crew going all over the world filming various cultures from primitive to advanced all with intereting music and extraordinary cinematography. It's kind of one of those movies everyone should see because it makes you feel like you need to learn more about other cultures and that the world is really a much bigger place than anyone thinks, largely due to how different things are everywhere else.

I didn't find it any slower than any other drama movie. It's not slow, just... patient. Anyway, I wasn't bored at all.

Well, I guess to be more specific then, I didn't like how the theme of the movie was kind of shoved into your face. I just think they should've tried to gt the point of the movie across in a more subtle and less pretentious way. Besides that, like I said I enjoy what the movie is about. I just wish they had tried harder to make this viewers figure it out for themselves.
Well, you are talking about very subtle things, they are definitely individual. I just watch the movie, and pick it apart later. And regarding "figuring it our for ourselves" - you know, whenever you see a movie like this, the theme is pretty obvious no matter how you put it. I didn't feel that it was showed at me, I knew what the movie is about more or less from the first few minutes, but I didn't know in detail, and that was enough. And it's definetely a lot less pretentious then other movies. Where is it pretentious?
