While I was enjoying reading trade chat today, I noticed someone looking for 2 socket pants, with 150 dex, 200 vit, and magic find, offering 23m. So quick thinking lead me to look in the AH for items that match that. I believe like 4 items came up, one which was only 18m. So I thought to myself, well this would be an easy way to make 5m. But rather, I decided to PM the person and let them know about the AH. he responded quickly, and logged off before I could reply back.
I then realized the pants on the AH were probably his.
Now, I'm not sure if this is a known scam, but I would consider myself a pretty educated player, and it almost cost me. I wanted to put it out there if anyone else runs into this problem.
You'd be right to assume the pants were probably his. Also, I believe you were in the same trade channel as I was in! Did you catch the argument involving spending real life currency for in-game items?
It happens, Also on a side note!!! There is times where i place my item for sale, and link the items to friends see if they want it. My plan is to sell it to them cheaper, and still make around the same because i cut the tax side of things. I link the item, and always tell them my item is there.
Your tag is quite elusive indeed... of the AP variety I would imagine. LOL
On topic though, this is a very standard scam and one done quite alot. I dont even fault the person for doing it as they are just drawing attention to their market. Stay up on current prices and trends and never overextend to make a quick buck.
The other one, and again its nothing new, is people using a second account to bid up an item that they are selling with a main. My advice on this is dont get in a bidding war and let it get out of hand. If you get over cut, stop.... evaluate the most you want to pay for that item (knowing they will probably push it there) and let it be. Maybe you get it and maybe you dont, but do not over extend. The best part about this is the type of person willing to do this will know you put the bid up higher in a larger chunk and will continue to push until it passes back to him. This being now out of your accepted price range should be let to pass on to the wayside. Take some pleasure in the possibility that the greedy bastard just bought his own item and lost on the fees.
