PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

What Ferret said. You could do that, or depending on the mod you could switch the vital files between games.
For example, a mod may only reqire you to change your PatchD2.mpq. The easiest thing would be to make a backup of your original (or "vanilla") mpq file, and paste the mod file in when you want to play the mod, and then paste back the original when playing on B.net
