Hi there folks, after trying out Beta for a couple of days I've noticed that the game is capped to 60fps when using 120hz monitor and vsync.
Are there any other people out there who also can confirm this?!
I'm afraid this issue might be overlooked and not be fixed for launch.
I have tried every single trick in the book to try get it working: (vsync on, 120fps capped) but it's just no luck.
If anyone here are using vsync and get 120fps or anything above 60fps with your 120hz monitors I would like to hear from you, because almost every other games that I own works fine, except Diablo III beta.
Have tried posting this at blizzard forums, but without much feedback.
I am quite sure this is "limited" by the software/Blizzard and not an issue with quality settings or other stuff, so again if someone is getting higher fps than 60 with vsync enabled on your 120hz monitors I would like to hear from you!
I don't have a 120hz screen (they don't make 1440p screens at 120hz at the moment), but I have a lot of experience playing with the settings
Diablo 3 doesn't (currently) support triple buffering, so if VSync is on, it's locked to a fraction of your frame rate if you can't sustain the full 120 FPS. Try lowering your detail, shadows especially. I estimate that you need at least 15% above your target HZ with Vsync off to maintain the speed with VSync on. In other words, turn VSync off and tune things to get at least 140 FPS, then turn VSync back on.
I've also noticed that the frame rate cap, if enabled, always causes a frame rate hit, even if the value is very high. Try disabling it by unchecking the option.
Changing the details of the graphics and still have vsync on = 60fps.
Forcing vsync in control panel/windows = 60fps (even while turning the option off in Diablo3).
Having windowed mode + vsync = 60fps (120hz users had to do this to get 120fps in Dirt3 before they made patch with a new fps limit).
I have made sure that I am running 120hz in windows and not 60.
Also tried to put my settings to 110hz, 100hz, 75hz without any luck of raising it above 60.
I might have tried several other things aswell, just forgotten the details!
I'm really getting the feeling that his is a FPS cap limited by Blizzard, so PLEASE if anyone else got 120hz monitors could you try force vsync and see what you get.
With vysnc off, does it "feel" like 120hz, tearing aside? Asuming Diablo 3 isn't dropping your refresh rate to 60 when it launches, it's possible that your FPS isn't high enough for a stable 120 so it falls back to the next denominator, which is 60 (each frame shown twice, essentially). I know if my detail settings yield an average of 55-65 FPS, vsync forces me to 30. I had to disable shadows to get a stable 60 FPS*, which was about 80 FPS with vsync off.
Try lowering your details to get 150 FPS or more and give vsync another try...
* Hopefully NVIDIA releases Kepler before May 15 so I can fix this
I'm on 120hz. Specificaly BenQ XL2410T LED backlit. I've had no problem getting 120fps with vsync, confirmed with fraps, and... well I know when I'm not getting my smooth 120fps. The game follows my desktop refresh rate though, not that it matters, because I use 120 on desktop anyways. One VERY important thing with 120hz screens is to make sure your OS has properly identified your monitors model, and doesn't just say "plug and play monitor etc.." Some games will default to 60hz if it fails to see that the screen can support 120hz.
A solution, if you can't get it to work would be to disable Vsync, set the games forground FPS cap to 120, and go into your monitors "info" display page and ensure its putting out 120hz. If it is, and you set the cap to 120, the effect should be almost as good as the real thing.
This is on an i7 @ 4.4ghz with a couple 580s, complete overkill for this game, even at 120fps. Cards load up to about 25% usage. As mentioned by Kardax though, to run a 120hz setup propely, you need to be able to maintain 120fps at ALL times, no matter how many zombies are blowing up at the same time.
Just out of curiosity what is the point in this exactly?

I think this might be an AMD/Blizzard issue with AMD cards.
With vsync off I can easily pull off 195-220fps if i lower my settings, which means I should be able to get 120fps with vsync turned on (but I don't).
This 120hz - 120fps thing works in "ALL" other games (where 120fps is achiveable with different detail settings) except Diablo III so I very much doubt it is a 'fault' on my side to be honest.
Tried several different drivers for my GPU also, without any luck.
My computer seems to be reporting the correct monitor name also: "ASUS VG236"
Rest of the setup is HD 5870, i7 860 running at 3.6Ghz with 8gb RAM.
This is of little use right now, but it appears that NVIDIA's "Kepler" GPUs (which will become the 600 series, I think), support adaptive vsync: vsync is off when framerate is below the refresh rate, and on when it matches or exceeds it. I think a lot of people will like this when this series is released
If you still can't get it to work, just disable vsync and cap your forground fps to 120.
Yeah that "would" work for a quickfix, but still will not solve the problem I'm afraid.
I have now contacted Blizzard and hopefully I will get a reply soon if they are aware of this issue or not.
Thanks for your input and feedback, let's hope this get fixed before/at launch
just did some testing, and the perfect solution for those who can't get 120fps with vsync is to set max forground fps to exactly 125. not one higher or lower. 111-124 always gave me 111fps, 126-142 always gave 125fps. 125fps gave 120 on the dot.

Yep, the cap is turned off.
