I want to know my damage the rest of the time. EG: As a wizard it would be beneficial to know if a high-intelligence shield is worthwhile for the defense or if I should just go with the magic source and a bit extra vitality.
The higher your DPS in your character screen = more damage
If your dying too much then put on a shield

Playing Diablo since 97. I know nothing and having nothing good to say, I be a troll.
I think it would be an amazing add on or however it was pulled off.
For example you can have 1 character using 1 attack for 100k dps
Or a character using 3 AoE's at 50k dps
overall, the character with 50k dps would have a higher damage out put per second then the single attack.
All builds differ with which attacks they use, the combination of them and many other factors that could make other far superior.

It would be a very useful tool.
And you need a tool to figure out that aoe is better for a crowd than a single target attack?
Wow your attitude is just dumb... He is not comparing D3 to WoW anywhere, he is talking about a usefull tool and you should shut up a go play with the rest of the kids. You can't read bro so at least don't point it out...
the instant you bring up Recount you've brought up WoW
Saying "recount" doesn't mean he's comparing the game to WoW, recount was used as an example that everybody would understand. If instead he said "I want a speedometer for my damage" does that mean he's comparing diablo3 to driving a car? No.
While there are addons that should not be made available, there are addons that I believe should be allowed. Specifically, non-gameplay addons like Auctioneer and so forth. It doesn't change how the game is played and would be a good way to maximize a player's money from selling items on the AH. For example, let's say I have a rare item (yellow) that is called "Scratching Post" or something like that. I can't look up that item on the AH by the name, I have to literally go through every page of that type of item looking for it to see what other people are selling it for. I know there are tons of item names out there, but there HAS to be a limit to how many there are, and when enough people are playing the game, they either have to double up on some (or triple or more) or there will be no more names available and the only things that will drop are the crap ones that get sold over and over to the vendor. So that means more than one person will have this "Scratching Post" and I would like to sell mine at the lowest cost, of course. By not allowing Auctioneer or anything of its like, Blizzard is forcing me to either sell it at a random price or look through every single page of items trying to find just one duplicate. I don't know about them, but if it were me, I'd want to make the people who PAID to play my game happy so they will want to pay for other games later...

Not necessarily true. A lot of builds have resource-generation that is independant of weapon-speed or crit-rate, and damage output that is dependant on weapon damage, not DPS. So swapping a slower weapon for a faster weapon with the exact same DPS can significantly alter that spec's performance.
Which is precisely why a recount-style mod would come in handy... and although Diablo is not WoW, it is a stats-based action game, which makes it desirable to have a lot of the same user feedback that WoW mods offer (like showing more than the standard, small, number of buffs).
As for the topic, Diablo3's UI is not remotely moddable without some deep binary hacking, which is against all manner of TnCs, ToSs and other important TLAs.
A recount mod could be written by using an overlay (or after-the-fact analysis) in combination with a memory-sniffer (almost certainly likely to trigger Warden), or a packet-sniffer (less so)... but it'd more than likely be slapped by Blizzard, as it offers the chance for other nonsense too (e.g. telling you what elites with what mods are within a 1000 yard radius, etc).
If all you're after is a tool that tells you how various specs perform, it'd be much easier to simulate it using a good spreadsheet and various models... as a bonus, that's 100% fine with Blizzard.
I won't warn you for necroing this thread tony. It is possible you really wanna discuss this topic.
I'll lock it, though, as the discussion that happened here is fairly old, and after this much time after release (and very little feedback wanting this kind of feature) means it's very unlikely we will see this feature ever implemented.
If you guys wish to discuss the subject of addons, feel free to create a new thread. The people discussing in this one are probably not even following the thread anymore.
