A suggestion for making gf/spouse enjoy release

  • #1
I have read people writing about how their wives or gfs hate Diablo or video games in general. I was in this same situation when I first got married. My wife hated when I would raid in WOW.

So I decided that since I was rewarding myself with Diablo III after a good semester(I would have done it even if it was a bad one lol) I would try to make her have something good too. The whole idea is to equate good experiences and memories with the release in hopes to slowly change her mind on video games.

For the last week I have been doing the spring cleaning that she normally does. I have just been doing an hour or so each night until release as a thanks to her for being cool about me playing and bothering her all the time with my excitement. It doesn't have to be something this big, but some type of positive reinforcement might help. I have been doing this for the past couple game releases and I must say it has been working.

She was happy enough that she volunteered to cook me all of my favorite meals next week, 3 meals a day plus desserts, etc. Here are some of the things she is cooking:

    Homemade orange rolls
    Slow cooked roast
    french toast
    homemade pizza (from scratch!)
    crepes
a burger run to my favorite burger joint
    snickerdoodles
    chicken casserole
    rice krispie treats
    fresh fruit platters
    breakfast burritos

the list goes on, but you get the idea. She has gone from a wife who absolutely despised video games of any kind to being someone who appreciates that I have a hobby that I love and even helping me to enjoy it more. I of course support her in her hobbies in return. Now my wife still doesn't like playing video games, but she is not anti-video game for me. Yes I do have an awesome wife:)

Does anyone have any experience good or bad with their gf or spouse? Or just some really good plans for release?

My gf didn't have any problems with release. She is very sensitive and easily aroused.

I hear you there. I have to make sure I put the "quality time" in also. Will it be difficult next week because of that? We actually went to a marriage counselor a couple years ago and to my amazement the counselor defended me playing video games and even raiding. She compared it to some guys going out and playing basketball a couple times a week.

Dude, that is absolute genius! My wife saw that reply and was quite impressed at your strategy.

in my experience all the things you did leading up to the game will go out the window on the day of release and things like "why don't you do those things anymore" start coming out of the woodwork. if anything you may very well have made it worse for yourself.

    competition win is genius though.

My thoughts exactly. We should want to help out on a daily basis but sometimes that isn't enough. The nagging will start again eventually anyway.

The funniest thing is that women say they want a guy that will cook, clean, etc. Then, once they get it, they aren't satisfied. It's sad to think of it like this but I've learned it's better to not overachieve when it comes to being a good spouse/significant other. They end up expecting more and more and then get angry when you can't deliver.

She can make pizza and crepes, but not a burger?!
One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away.

I don't think I could continue to date a woman after realizing she had a major problem with one of my hobbies. It's one thing if you are completely neglecting your significant other, but that would be a problem regardless of the reason. It'd also be an issue if you are crossing intimacy boundaries, but that's hardly true with gaming unless you're cybering. Doesn't she have any hobbies, and if not, why not? It seems like this would be a great opportunity to explore some. Do couples have to spend every waking moment in each other's company? Besides, even if I weren't a gamer, I'd rather have a girlfriend who stayed home playing video games than one who went out drinking or shopping every night.
...and if you disagree with me, you're probably <insert random ad hominem attack here>.

I got a nice 3 hour mid day break every day home to myself for D3 time, plus I get a couple of weeknights as well. Then the weekend comes, and I get to start a new toon to play thru the game with my wife as well :hehe:

I guess i got nothin to complain about...
