We've only seen a handful of items both from the beta and the armory on the official website. There isn't a total available yet, but I would expect there to be at least as many as there were in diablo 2, probably more. More will likely show up in expansions and contet patches as well.
You've got to wait until Blizzard is able to update the Legendary and Set items which they are still working on updating the stats.
I've read an article before that those Set items on the Official Diablo III Blizzard website are only part of the whole, so they might update it to show everything, but I doubt they would be doing so anytime soon.
I think for now, they're more concentrating on polishing the game for release between April to June (Q2). They might do it after the game releases or after they've made the finishing touches for release.
I really hope they have more in D3 than they did in D2 I know for a fact that each class will have there own set and I hope they bring Sigon's set back
No idear mate, but currently basic items have up to tier 16 (Regular gear you can obtain off mobs grey->unique quality) Bashiok stated that the items on the main page are only a small fraction complete (which makes me smile) So i'm hoping to see lots of new and unique looking items on release!
I really hope we don't have a situation like in D2 where sets end up being worthless. I like the idea of collecting sets. It gives you a sense of fulfillment when you collect the whole thing. And in d2 we reached a point where 1 maybe 2 sets were viable and the rest were trash. I just hope they can somehow fix that in d3
I like the idea of sets, but never, in all the Diablo and Diablo-like games I've played, have managed to acquire more than two pieces from a single set. Maybe, maybe, three. Once.
I'm not arguing against their inclusion, but if they are in the game, they should be some of the best gear. Echoing the sentiments of some earlier posts, if you actually come up with a complete set it should be worth equipping.
I think whole point of removing runewords was that sets are much more useful/powerful, so i assume sets will really be good, especially if we look at how much sets come from where ( most from Inferno ) meaning they will probably be made for late game playing / grinding, which will be nice change.

You should play Kingdoms of Amalur. There are probably 40 different sets all with 4 to 5 pieces and you get them constantly. You'll be a happy man there. Managed to get at least 5-6 sets completed. Some are even given to you all at once.
To OP: I think the estimates which chippydip posted are quite nice for a final number. Though you can never go wrong with more sets. And more uniques.
I'd like the sets to actually be meaningful in D3. In D2 Blizzard tried a bunch of funky stuff to get people to use them (think necromancer fireballs and change form?) but at the end of the day the market was oversturated with better items via ruins.
i think the auction house will be a great addition when trying to find all the peices to a set, could make them more viable mid to late game as transition items to inferno.
I have to say, from the streams i've seen all the top items in the beta are crafted. do we think it will be like that late game too?

nah I think late game will me more a mixture. I think the reason the top beta items are all crafted is because of the beta ending at the skeleton king. In the actual game people would not be capped there and by the time they were level 13 would further and picking up more comparable gear I think.

My PvP build would be different from these 13.
