Well finally! After all the events in Heroes of the Storm that grant rewards for WoW and OW, D3 finally gets something. Here are the details...
It’s a simple task: Play 15 Games with friend in VS AI, QM, Ranked, and Unranked Draft as Heroes from the Diablo Universe. Once the bargain
is struck and the task is complete, you’ll receive the following rewards:
Heroes of the Storm Rewards: Leoric’s Phantom, 1x Epic Loot Chest
Diablo III PC Rewards: Ghost Kerrigan Wings
The event begins during the week of June 13, and lasts until June 26*
*Exact start and end dates may vary slightly by region.
Yeah, it's basically Genji runs all over again. A decent team will do each game in 3-4min vs AI if they keep to maps that you can directly attack the core.
I'm in a discussion on Reddit about this and gonna ask here as well:
What's your advice for a group of total noobs of 2-3 players with zero moba experience/interest to do this as quickly as possible? Keep in mind:
* No knowledge of game mechanics, weak/no coordination, we'll have to read tooltips, talents, skill in the game, so 2-3 minutes will probably be just that
* We want games to end quickly, so strategies that focus on high-level hero skills are rather... useless
* We'll play with AI allies against beginner AI, so we'll have the stupid AI allies sabotage as from time to time (I've tested this yesterday, they sometimes hearth back for stupid reasons instead of just finishing the push and demolish the core)
* Everyone wants to play Diablo heroes since taking turns would extend this to 30 games, so hero combinations need to be comprised of Diablo heroes only.
I personally like Azmodan the most of the Diablo heroes, but I need a strong healer on my back, especially in the beginning before I get the healing talent. Malfurion (AI ally) is an amazing healer to have on my back, but as I said, when I started blasting the core he was just like "get rekt m8" and hearthed back for no reason, delaying the entire game for ~5 minutes. I tried Auriel and gonna try Kharazim tonight but it seems like it's not the kind of sustained heal we might need for a 2-3 hero push team once AI allies backstab us again.
Basically, 3-4 minute games are possible for people with tons of HotS experience. But those will get those 15 wins anyways because... well... they're regular HotS players. During those 13 days, however, many many people will come to HotS with no experience, take a random Diablo hero, and play like a total noob. So it would be great to have some strategies for those people (like me)
I already wrote on Reddit: What would be useful is a HotS "15 games guide" similar to a T6-T8 low-gear guide for D3 starters, and not the kind of high-end meta guides. I'll play 15 vs AI games to get that thing out of the way and then uninstall, because mobas aren't my thing ;-)
Well, I've never played hots, and wasn't planning on ever doing so, but now, for the wings, I feel like I have to.
So that kinda guide Bagstone wrote about would be so useful.
Can this be done alone? Or are any HotS players around willing to "carry" guys like myself through this in order to get the wings. And do you have to win 15 games or just do 15 games?
Well, I've never played hots, and wasn't planning on ever doing so, but now, for the wings, I feel like I have to.
Same :/

Nope, needs to be "with a friend" (not sure if just any human player or someone who's actually on your friends list, I think the former). Right now on Reddit people are super willing to "carry", but honestly, moba strategies are so complex and the skill cap is so ridiculous, I think 2-3 days in the HotS veterans will absolutely loathe all those D3 noobs swarming their games. And there'll be a handful of those in every match. That's why I think we need a noob guide rather than those "gg 5 mins cheeze guides" which can't be executed by people like you and me.
I think you can lose. I've been told that during some OW event that's what people did - which made for horrible games because in every game on both sides there were just people sabotaging and trying to intentionally lose. In HotS you can play against AI, so losing 15 quick vs AI matches against elite could be an option... not sure if it's really fast though and works. Also, the announcement is a bit unclear - it doesn't say "vs AI *or* ranked/unranked" but "AND". I hope it doesn't require us to play matches with+against other human players...
Edit: Someone just said on Reddit that semi-afk'ing in an vs elite game can result in a 25 min game, so there's no "quick loss" option, probably.
Games stupid easy against AI, you don't have to win, they DO have to be on your friends list, and team composition against AI is just about as irrelevant as is humanly possible.
There is no strategy against AI, just pay attention to which map you're on and what the particular goals are of that map. gather the Nukes/tributes, gems, skulls, whatever, and turn them in, launch them and the game will go much faster. Especially if you're playing against the lowest AI lvl. I play against the upper end ones and it gets a bit harder, but only if your teams full of a buncha newbs...
I keep reading that you can easily win every AI game in sub 5 minutes, but our fastest game was 7:30 or so and average is more like 10-15. I have very limited time in the timeframe of this event, but I have some time to prepare now. I really want to keep the games as fast as possible, and I'd really like to know what I'm doing wrong - because I'm just doing what you said (pick random compositions, follow objectives, push hard) and it takes 3 times as long.
put the game on begginer AI mode. i dont think anyone has ever lost against this. say you are 3 friends playing together, trust me, even by doing nothing the other 2 guys WILL carry you succesfully even if they are not pros.
now if you want to contribute to the game, group up and start pushing one lane. focus on that one lane until you get to the core. and then focus on objectives or getting the boss to help you. thats basically it and you are done.
as for which characters to take, valla is crazy strong and simple, just buff her auto attack talents and she will kill heroes and minion waves in seconds. azmodan is very good at dealing damage to structures and minions, buff his beam talents for safe/max damage against towers. and my personal favorite, sonya. take seismic slam talents and WOTB heroic and just stomp everything. xul/nazeebo are also very strong.
avoid tanks and supports against AI. the only defense you need is your minion waves, while those are alive towers shoot at them first before targeting you. core does aoe damage to all of you near it though so you cant just go at it alone, azmodan with max beam talents candamage it with beam without taking damage since you out range it.
hope that helps, happy grinding.
Thanks, that did indeed help, Just a follow-up to Azmodan (who's my favorite) and you saying "you don't need support": Without support we feel like we lost a lot of health and have to fall back (or even hearth and heal) which always costs a minute or so. Not good if you want to keep games short. Also, high-level abilities - such as Azmodan's heal - are useful but best case you don't even reach those high-level endgame levels... if you get those 3-5 minute wins that people keep talking about (but I've yet to see).
People playing Hots wont complain against the usual influx of people (or rather shouldnt... but it is the internet so >_<). Playing on Easy vs AI, is kinda the "Do Quests quickly" playmode, and usually people will, in the begining either ping the map or outright state which lane to push. Chances are that you wont run into any competive people at all.
For those without any friends playing hots, join the general channel and either ask for or wait for someone else to write they are doing the quest. Just remember to send a friend invite after you find someone to team up with. It is notenough to be in a group. Many people will want to get the quests over as quickly as possible, myself included. With the last set of quests, I did them all with randoms. Then only later teamed up with friends that needed it (so I didnt have to worry about completing due to people having IRL things to do). Do it sooner rather than later, as it gets harder to find people later on (it spikes near the end though). Remember that the General chat is only one among many, so it might help to switch to another, if you are having trouble finding people.
Always, always have a Sylvanas on the team. When she hits towers and forts, they stop shooting (as long as you keep hitting them). For some maps (on Easy AI), this means that you can completely ignore map objectives and just rush the enemy core.
Edit: aaaaaand I competely missed the "Play a Diablo Character" So ignore the Sylvanas part hehe
I made an account just to help y'all out. AI beginner games can be done in under 5min if you have the right hero options. Sgt. Hammer/ Slyv combo usually does this very well. But those aren't Diablo heroes. Last time they have a restricted quest it was WoW based and for that week lots of heroes from WoW universe were free. I foresee them doing the same for this.
Here's all that matters in getting this done as fast possible. Nazeebo (witch doctor) and Azmodan. Both of these heroes are easy to play. If you pick Azmodan notice you have a D ability. You and your friend should really be one of these heroes. Another great option would be Sonya. She has great early game lane clear. Li-Ming (wizard, can also hit towers without being hit) she's a bit on the harder side to play to her full potential though.
Another thing about maps. if you are on a map with bosses push in the same lane they will (Usually top or bottom. I go top on warhead due to more warheads spawning on top part of map). Clear to keep, go get boss, finish the game. If a map doesn't have a boss usually the objective is (Haunted Mines) get the skulls and push.
All in all though, AI beginner should at most take 12mins~ For real don't sweat it. They will let you beat them in the face.
Also look up Genji Runs Tips... if Overwatch players can get their heads around HOTS, D3 players sure can as well.
As for Azmodan, I think you'll find that he'll be a good choice. Don't worry about the heal. Assemble a laser build as Seriious09 says as after you fire the laser (which requires you getting in defenses attack range) you can step backwards whilst still firing to get out of their range. You could also get your team mates that are tanks to walk ahead and take the hits whilst you set up.
Thanks MugsyAU for the pointer! Indeed lots of useful tips. Just one thing you probably want to edit: The Diablo portrait for getting to level 12 in HotS is not available anymore I never played HotS until a few weeks ago, and I'm now level 15 - but still no HotS portrait in Diablo.
Cheers for the heads up RE the HOTS rewards not be awarded now Bagstone.
Out of curiosity, did you log into D3 and start up a game too? I remember the HOTS rewards only arrive after you start up a D3 game. Drove me crazy.
I've found a few threads on this and someone here said that you now need a character to be at lvl12, not the account anymore and then someone else said that didn't work for them. Another player said that it may take a while for the reward to come through:
@thundergod90 and @MugsyAU: Thanks!!! Just logged it, started a game, and it worked.
It took about 3-4 weeks or so. I got to HotS level 12 in the first week of May, played a bit of D3 at the end of May and never got it, but today when I logged in and just started a game (not even on a new character) I got the popup. Yay! Finally. Thanks for making me check again ;-)
@ Bagstone: That's great news mate! Seems that the reward does take a bit of time to arrive but at least it's come. Better late than never.
@ BlackCurse: Azmodan's laser build is probably the best bet for a 3-5min run and he's a 2k hero too. I did some solo xp farming recent with Azmo and he does a good job with taking down defenses and forts.

As someone who plays HOTS quite a bit, it's a pretty easy task for a pretty cool pair of wings.
Well, 15 games are just a bunch - especially you can just group up and go against AI in "hurrdurr" mode.

I didn't read anything that states you have to win the match, just to play it with a friend...
It may be easier and quicker to go against high level AI (or however it works in HOTS) and let them destroy you in 2 minutes or AFK.
if that's true you, and a friend, may be done in half an hour.
Well, I've never played hots, and wasn't planning on ever doing so, but now, for the wings, I feel like I have to.

I plan on feeding the enemy AI heroes a few times to boost their levels before afk'ing. Hope that this will seal the game faster.
well, at least I could be afk while being at work, teamviewering every half an hour to start a new game. but a guide would still be prefered i guess
You're being kicked after a minute or so when afk'ing in HotS, so that's not possible
