Making a single item the currency is the same idea as making gold the currency except you would be poor until you found a SOJ but you could save up gold along the way as you level.
I felt a great disturbance in the Force... as though a million voices cried out, "YOU GIEB SOJ??", and were suddenly silenced [by the Hand of Mod for inciting a spam-buffet].
The reasonable choice would be gold of course. But the issue is that Diablo players got used to trade using items. I'm looking forward on how Blizzard will solve this problem which is the worst right behind the hacks.
On the note of currency, (bahaha, that's a pun) I think it would make the experience a little more fun overall if the player really had to work alot harder to get gold. In Diablo II, it almost seemed useless, with the advent of selling an item, then BOOM, you're 200 grand richer. If in Diablo III, we really have to scrounge for gold, it may be more exciting when we see that glitter of gold in a dungeon. But hey, that's just one opinion.

I agree completely. This is why the currency of wow is so successful. I think some make it seem where Wow would be considered easy but that isnt true. Wow rewards hard work wher as Diablo 2 did not. I support the idea of making gold something that you can collect along the way.

diablo 2 rewarded hard work. the only thing was it took alot of time and dedication to find that first soj or HR. but once you become unnoobish, by tryingg to trade for sojs or HRS you learn to respect the game alot more. diablo 2 was so perfect becuase of the difficulties. players who are just looking for a fun time will beat norm mabye nightmare. people who are really dedicated will be able to beat hell.

rofl, you say it like it is some noble accomplishment to take on the hell difficulty. We should all remember here, it is still jsut a game. When you put in the cd you do it because you want fun out of it...

Having or not having a SOJ had nothing to do with "noobishness".
I played for many years, on a handful of different Hell mode characters and never once found a SOJ on legit and it's near impossible to trade anything for a SOJ/High Rune if you don't have a SOJ/High Rune.
I've been playing DII and LOD since it was available. Never had a real SoJ.
My reward for all that hard work?

So we've got over the problem of colour in D3. Great. Now let's argue about everything else not yet set in stone and help make this game simply great! Game on.

Indeed, i think i had a soj once....no wait..nvm that was definitely a sweet dream. I think norm andy dropped it

ive found at least 6 sojs throughout my time playing diablo II. having over 100 throught my entire career........ highrunes are nearly impossible to find, but it is very easy to trade for them all you need is something 1/2 way decent. it always seemd it was alot easier to break into the HR market rather then the soj market. but still both were for the real dedicated players.

Stop complaining and take out your wallet. Obviously real money is the currency in D2. Same thing is going to happen with D3, just on a more serious scale.
i hate how sojs, hex charms, and hrs have dominated the currency market people will never trade item for item, and that takes the fun away from trading
I have nothing against an item becoming a currency. The problem is when the item gets duped beyond insanity and floods the market.
Runes were fine in my book as a from of currency. But I feel they shouldn't completely replace well, currency. The new currency should be, currency. Gold pieces, silver pieces, and even bronze pieces.
A few pieces of gold, maybe a rune as well for an item, I do not see a problem there, assuming the rune is a little on the rare/seldom seen side. If the rune (or any item for that matter) is as commonly occurring as pimples on a teenager, then there is a problem.
At first I think trading will be great, fun, enjoyable, whatever, like it used to be. Once people figure out how to dupe, the market will go to shit again.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
We need realistic/balanced gold prices on item descriptions.
Though its insanely hard to have them balanced also because different kind of items and/or item attributes will be more or less important for different classes and builds.
Actually there already ARE gold prices on item descriptions as seen in the gameplay trailer but id guess they are just the same as the vendor prices in D2. Except that vendor prices in D2 had limits according to the act you're in.
That would be helped, in part, if not in full, by gold (or whatever actual currency the game uses) having more meaning and value.
It works much the same in any game, items near the start of the game are sold and bought for prices much less than those in later areas or acts. Generally due to the better quality, or more properties present on items in later stages. Not too much can be done to fix that. Make it less obvious, but it will always be there. End Game items will always be better and thus cost more than Beginning Game items.

Personally, I wouldn't even glance at gold if it wasn't more than 10000-15000+
