Hello all I'm new to the forum and I thought this is a interesting topic so I'd just like to state my opinions.
Firstly I'd just like to say the graphic is amazing as it is and I simply loved it the first moment I saw it, but I felt somewhat angrish when people even stated that they did not liked the graphics? or that it wasn't good enough...personally I think you guys are expecting too much, the main priority is the content of the gameplay not the graphics.
I seriously hate when people began to bash Blizzard saying "uhh man this is crappy its too cartoony" seriously just stfu cause I don't see anything cartoonish about it at all. If you REALLY want something cartoony go play maple story or something.
I also hate when people began to complain how the graphic is looking too similar to WoW. I've never played WoW but I've seen the graphics very much so and many videos of it's gameplay, and it is quite nice if I may say so. So what exactly is your point here? you are saying D3's graphic look too similar to WoW? is that such a bad thing? the last time I check WoW's graphic looks pretty awsome.
But remember, its gameplay > graphics.
and also, its just my opinions.
And even more I think we need to keep in mind that this is DIABLO 3 <-- Three
meaning its a whole new sequel AND its been over 5years+ which also mean new technology = newer/upgraded Graphics!! gosh we can't just always have the same old shit it'd be too boring. I don't mind a little color here and there at all.
and I gotta admit though the edits that some poster show were indeed pretty good (editing skills that is) but I still prefer the originals. the edits were just...waaayy too dark everywhere, i mean how the fudge do I fight something if I can't freaking see it...if I'm gonna be spending hours on this game I want to be able to see what im doing dammit
but yeah please don't take it too seriously it's just how I see it...
because seriously if they had shown Diablo 3 and the graphic are or almost the same as Diablo 2, I would seriously be dissapointed. They might as well just add another D2 expansion instead...pfft
but yup overall I can't freaking wait for D3!!! so just enjoy the graphic as it is, and I'm sure there are darker & more ancient evil graphic-style throughout the whole game.
Seriously, I want to see hair moving in the wind or when they run. Especially if the demo is the tristram sanctuary, graphics should be fixed a bit. Why is everything sparkling clean? Diablo needs to have a serious feel. I can't believe people would think darker colors would seem boring. Diablo 1 wasn't boring, remember, the game has to appeal to diablo fans, not WoW fans. That's my opinion.
PS. The zombies and skeletons look weird to me and.... NO DAMN RAINBOWS
Blizzard in the past compiled not the best graphics, but graphics that fit a specific attitude for EACH universe. I understand that some people are saying "it's only a demo," "graphics do not matter," however, Blizzard in the past was able to create games with great game play WHILE preserving specific attitudes for each game/Universe. As for the demo remark, if nothing is said now, no change will be made. Look at the development of starcraft II, constantly changing and getting better due to fans pointing out problems and things they do not like. If nothing is said about this demo, nothing will happen. Diablo fans DO care about the diablo universe, so they show concern, whether it is harsh or gentle.
I'm sorry, but I've read some of the most ridiculous things ever about this graphics petition and I'd just like to raise a few points.
1: Dark isn't automatically more creepy. In diablo 2, act 1 and 2 weren't creepy outside of the dungeons, act 3 was, act 4 wasn't creepy, it was more blatantly obvious hordes of demons, and act 5 was just a few war zones and some beautiful mountain areas. Think of the outdoors region revealed in D3 to be like the mountain areas of Act 5.
2: Creepy doesn't automatically make a game good. Which was better, Original Doom or Doom 3? Doom was action packed with a hellish and creepy setting, Doom 3 was just creepy, most of the areas were too dark and the detail could hardly be noticed. Now, when I watched the gameplay trailer and those ghouls started crawling up the side of the walk way, THAT was creepy, and you could actually see the dungeon you were in.
3: Watch the barbarian tear through those hordes with the sound on for once and listen to the crunching and splattering sounds THEN try to say the game is cartoony(unless we're talking about some twisted X rated anime) or wow-like.
Trust me, Blizzard knows how to make games, if you think you can do it better go ask for a job. The people getting all self righteous with these demands would petition Tolkein to give Gimli a pair of Uzi's in LoTR if he were still alive.
No. They are true Diablo fans and rightfully protest against this WoW-ification.
If this cartoon style doesn't make you claw your eyes out, then you're not a Diablo fan but a WoW fan or Blizzardrone. WoW should stay the hell away from Diablo.
I don't recall seeing much blood in my two years playing wow, and I'd say there's more blood in the first half of the gameplay trailer than my entire wow experience.
Sure, they have the right to protest if they don't like it, but we've seen TWO zones, it's too soon to judge. The characters look far more detailed than ones in wow too, so I dont know where you're getting this wowification from.
Also, anything that isn't live action can be described as looking cartoony one way or another.
It's not the violence, it's the art stye. That one pic posted back there? If i hadn't known it was a pic from D3 i would've sworn it was from WoW.
And that last part is just ridiculous. Art has many forms and genres, including 'cartoony' and 'realistic'.
Really? Warcraft 3 was cartoony, just because something is 3D but goes for performance and availability on more computers by not being cutting edge graphics doesn't make it cartoony.
And speaking of art, what is creating a game but a different artform? Since when has democracy applied to art? Did they take a vote on whether Michaelangelo's David should be clothed or not? Nope, it's the artists decision.
The art style of the 3Dimensional generation of Blizzard has seemed a bit cartoony to me. It has always seemed that way to me, from Warcraft3 to WoW, to Starcraft2 and then to Diablo 3. The problem though, with Diablo 3, at least in my opinion is that the textures they are using are too much like the cave stylings of World of Warcraft. The castle environment that should ideally be really dark and mysterious, not colorful and energetic, is (quite obviously) cartoony, but that doesn't mean they won't change it. Blizzard has a notorious reputation of changing things quite a lot. The game really needs the color stylings that the skeptical fans are dishing out, but not to such an extreme as to take out the sensation of the environment and replace it with a gaping maw of darkness and abyss
With the dark grainy colors that everyone is thinking ideally about, things such as trees and spells and structures can still stand out and remain vibrant and resonating and regardless of how hard it might be to change the coloring to a slightly darker theme or how it might make it appear that they need to remake characters with more details. The coloring theme being darker and more mysterious would help quite a lot to convey the emotions of the game and not come off as a mini-WoW because the instances and environments in that game were trying to paint a picture of a colorful cartoony high fantasy world where racial stereotypes are funny and everything grim is surely a jest. "In living color"
The environment coloring is very important. I can think of only one example that truely stands out as an example of a missing element that compromised the quality of the game in a similar way. Command and Conquer 3, it did not have the proper music, it needed Frank Klepacki's style (They figured that out with Red Alert 3, thank god). People don't say it (hell, maybe i'm the only one) but the music in C&C3 and Generals just sucked. The Techno Industrial theme that Klepacki strung together fit C&C1-2 and Red Alert 1-2. This is in my view similar in scope to D3's issue, it might seem small and overlookable but the subtle things stand out later on, and that's where Blizzard Products stand the best, the tests of time. To make it look like the Scarlet Monestary won't help at all, it will bring into question the feeling for the game, that is why I think D3 will need the dark gothic look so the progression could be true to itself and to symbolically represent the growing uncertainty of the Diablo world and it's distinctive difference from Warcraft and Starcraft. I mean honestly why was my first thought when I saw the game "Warcraft 4 featuring Bruce Campbell as Mediev"
I really hope they change it a little. I watched the Q'n'A and I got the feeling they missunderstood something maybe (It's entirely possible that I'm wrong). Perhaps the Diablo teams decided to use 2d graphics with rich colors because it was, at the time, the most efficient way of making it look good and that's fine but now this is just cheap in my opinion, they have more resources than before, they were limited where they simply are not now, it's true that it would take longer but the product would be all the more closer to perfection. "Why didn't anyone mention the Barbarian Smith mentioning his idea for guns"
In the long run I see them appealing to our doubt and darkening it up. (They're giving this site extra attention it would seem) That's a 60% probability from my point of view. and the other 40? Nothing in the way of retexturing.
(Don't take this seriously but just consider it.)
I'm just blurting that out, maybe this kind of thread is over done, I appologize. I never share my views on games with others but I felt compelled to this time.
If they put in everything the people say here, it will be a copy of d2.
I'm all for a new game -- I would not like Diablo II's gameplay after all the advances we've had since 2000 -- but graphically, it's not a new game, it's practically crossover between Diablo II and World of WarCraft. I don't mean to disparrage either of them, but the two franchises should remain separate, shouldn't they? Adopting useful gameplay elements is one thing, but some of the visual elements are so WoW-derived that it hurts.

There was also a big difference between 1 and 2 if I remember correctly.
Oh, absolutely. I expected a big difference, and I don't see how the edited screenshots in the original post, for example, are not a huge upgrade from Diablo II. Whether or not it looks like the previous games isn't really the issue, it's whether or not it still feels oppressive, threatening, horrific. It's also a good idea, in my opinion, WarCraftesque armour as hyperlinked above.

If I got you correctly, you are pretty satisfied with the gameplay video, and you still think it will be a great game like this!
Certainly. I know you were addressing Urda, and I obviously can't speak for others, but there's nothing impossible about being psyched for the game while also having graphical criticisms.

There's definitely a difference in priorities amongst the hundreds of thousands of fans. I know that I view gameplay, story, graphics, sound, and music as equally important.

I don't know i personaly believe making it too cartoonish just makes diablo lose its dark fantasy touch.... In the news when they talk about diablo they talk about a fantasy world... but its not just that... people forget that its not just fantasy, its dark fantasy, its what basically differenciate diablo from EVERYTHING else out there, thats why diablo1 and 2 was a major hit. This is basically making diablo3 lean towards the idea of warcraff/starcraft2/worldofwarcraft. And some people mentioned as well that it would be cool if the world kinda changed gradually as the game advanced, i mean yeah thad be something cool to consider. but i cant help myself to think how much those pictures that have been edited look better. for example that picture of the barbarian on that bridge... With too much colour that tree in the background looses its shades, and its creepyness... with more darker colours dn more shades of gray and black, it makes it much more dark fantasy like, when its too colourfull i feel like a fluffy bunny is going to get out of a tree, not some monster.. I mean gosh theres even a rainbow in the background... i dont know i voted that it get changed not nesseserly towards what those pics look like, but at least give it more realistic touch
Also i forgot to say, so far gameplay wise im extremely satisfied, i mean the whole thing about ghouls crawling from the sides of the wall was just omg, and using the environment to do sstuff is amazing as well, i just believe they should reconsider the graphics a little bit. What they should do is maybe make a gameplay video with that more realistic style and less cartoonlish/WoW type of art. And the idea of making the world seem more "corrupted" as the players advance throughtout the story is good, but just tune it down a bit in the beginning coz that just seems like from absolute jumping happy elfs out of rainbow trees to broken dark rainy skies? too big of a contrast if you ask me...And dont forget the fact that its only been 20years, the world doesnt go back easily after the prime evils totaly ravaged the world...I dont know its my own opinion thats all
yeah.... that vodoo character thing is just sooooo a necromancer wanna be gosh... Disease spells? summoning? like wtf... and besides that vodoo character is just soooooo warcraft3 the frozen throne ish.

Why? Because there is a Troll Witch Doctor? You are aware that there are Witch Doctors in South America and areas in Africa right? You probably have never been to Haiti then. We have yet to hear his voice, we don't know if he's jamaican like Warcraft's trolls are. Wait until you hear his voice before you make such assumptions.

Keep this leveldesign, but kick that colored freak with feathers! It´ll replace the necromancer!?!
No need to discuss the backroundgraphics if Blizzard isnt´ able to distinguish the difference between a necromancer and some kind of vodoodaddy in relation to a game like Diablo...
Why don´t they play hip hop for gamesound and bring in somekind of comicpanda with pumpgun!!
Whish, David Brevik had the rigts for D3... i´m sure there were nearly no things to discuss ...
Okay, why aren't you banned yet? Seriously, anyone else notice the biggot in the topic?
i'm just trying to make the best if they're going to use that engine and so forth.
a brand new engine / art direction would be sweet but i cant show that by editing screenshots.
at the very least they need to make the current engine less cartoony and so forth, if we have no choice.
U accuse me, ask for my bann... which part of my message didn´t you unterstand?
Maybe it is my terrible english...
otherwise it could be your supernatural ability that filters out the truth from all the words spoken?
Or is it just the fact that I use the word colored with colors? (recognize the plural)
Even if you take out the color part it still leaves the stereotype that all black men love rap music and are violent people. Don't insult my Intelligence by saying I was mistaken.
What this petition is saying: Diablo 3 shouldn't be a game made by Blizzard. How does it say this? Because you're bitching about the art style of Blizzard Entertainment entirely. They have a philosophy they follow to make a game, and the same philosophy and people that made WoW are making Diablo 3 from the artistic level. You have to remember that Diablo and Diablo 2 were not made by Blizzard. They were made by Blizzard North, a studio which no longer exists. If you can't stand the fact that Diablo 3 will at least somewhat visually hold similar undertones as WoW, then I advise you to just walk away and spare yourself the grief. It already is darker and grittier than WoW.
Hey guys, first time poster, and I think you're right on when it comes to how crappy Diablo III looks.
It's way too bright! Games are terrible when you can clearly see everything around you, it's gotta be dark, mysterious and brooding. You have to conceal details and shroud doors and shit in shadows so it can't be clearly seen.
I was inspired by all the touchups that were posted earlier and did some of my own. THIS is how Diablo III should look like.
