imo diablo 2's atmosphere wasn't as scarey because you were out in the open land and in cities/camps whereas diablo 1 you were in a doomed town and a cathedral overrun by forces of hell. like running around in the desert of aranoch is going to be as scarey as running in darkend catacombs? it was still a little nerve-racking running out into the unkown wilderness; parts of d2 such as the palace cellar, rogue monastery etc. had some of the dark atmosphere.

Exactly. D2 wasn't the same. Great "game" as it were, but atmosphere wise it wasn't shit on Diablo, which is why IMO Diablo was actually the better game. Knowing that all that you do is futile almost adds to the game, it always felt kind of desperate, the whole atmosphere is one of "evil will win,no matter what you do." And it works, on so many levels. I don't think that anyone can honestly say that Diablo 2 ever matched the atmosphere of Diablo. It was a better game, technically, but Diablo's atmosphere will probably never be matched. This is why I say that if they manage to create the atmosphere of Diablo in Diablo 3 then it will easily be the best game of all time. Easly. I still play Diablo, I don't really play D2, because it's not about the atmosphere in that game, it's all about the loot.
IMHO Blizzard will never ever come close to matching the atmosphere of the first game, BUT if they somehow manage this then D3 will EASILY be the best game of all time. Without question, but the problem is, matching the atmosphere of the first game is like saying to a composer "yeah, basically, you have to compose a piece of music more haunting than the Moonlight Sonata".
Not gonna happen (though I would fucking spaff my pants if it did.)
well i think what the composer thought in diablo 2 was matching the music with the lvl. like in the desert you have music that sounds like you are in a desert. in the jungle you would expect music from that area. so instead of having creepy music he sorta had more relistic music when you entered a different area of the game.
i still would like creepy music in diablo 3 though
Yea. I dont think they shoudl readd Tristram music in the town though. The music was desighned for Tristram and unless Tristram rebuilds and diablo3 takles place in Tristram which will never happen but I think they should have music similar but the music of Tristram should stay in Tristram

I really hope the folks at Blizzard agree as well.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

WOW!
- P.S. Seems all those Matt Uelmen threads were duplicates, LOL.
But this IS old, and I'm closing it because there are newer threads.
