Just found a soj that is 19 cold /27 elite. My question is what is better Crit chance or area damage? My damage all comes from ray of frost with black ice. Not sure how area damage procs off of the black ice or if it procs off of the piercing. Any advice is much appreciated.
Of the two, probably crit hit chance (though not many people have even tested area damage yet, I think it's undervalued). The best roll on an SoJ for wizards however is usually crit hit damage.
Problem with area damage is that it does nothing against single targets (Black Ice issue, too). If you're running a channeling build, I'm going to bet you have APoC somewhere on your gear, so CHC will help there.
Depending on your current CHC/CHD ratio, it might even be better to get CHD on the SoJ.
Fixed DoT effects (i.e. Black Ice proc, Blizzard, Haunt, Locust Swarm, Rend, etc.) now have normalized damage now based on your CHC/CHD, though I'm not 100% sure about Black Ice in its current state. It would make sense if it is, thus it'll depend on your current CHC/CHD ratio for maximized damage.
Thanks for the advice guess i need to really look at how area damage is proc off of ray of frost. I do have trouble with single targets they do take longer to kill, but groups go down very quickly. I have no opened up a whole new delema i found a tals ammy. It does not have cold damage but its 98 chd/ 10CC and completes the 4 tals for me. I do not have APoC, between cost reduction tals, and follower i rarely run into a situation where i run out of resource.
