Well i would hope you're not having trouble in A3 considering you're using a 1112dps onehander. But I must ask, if Act 3 doesn't give you any trouble, then why haven't you completed it yet?
Ok, FYI the BBV is normally when i'm with my Barb and DH hunter friends to burn things fast. becuase we also had a scrub with us at the time who was doing 9 k of damage. but you are right i really don't need it. the other 2 items make perfect sense I do have a shield which does have what you are stating just drops me about 19k (but i do need to survive for pets to be effective.) I have used Spirit walk before but it seemed bugged as i would still be trapped behind walls did they fix that?
OK that actually makes sense then. BBV didn't fit into your build one bit honestly. However, in a group scenario you are definitely right to have done that. I'm tempted to pick up BBV instead of Searing Insects myself when I'm grouped with people. I'll gladly be a one-attack wonder for that extra groupwide burst on elite packs. Your explanation has given me room to think about my build and things that I can potentially be doing better, and therefore it's a great discussion to have! I thank you for helping me to think outside of the box a bit more.
I disagree about his survivability.
<snip to avoid a huge quote tree>
I definitely don't want to get into a huge debate about what resistances are "needed" because people constantly prove they can do things outside the realm of what is accepted. That being said, I have 700+ resist all. 750+ with a 5-stack of Soul Harvest (I use Soul to Waste exactly for the reason you stated - less running in, more 5-stack uptime, more damage, more resistances) along with 3k armor, and Act 3 stuff still hits plenty hard. Potentially dropping 300 resist all, to me, is definitely toeing the line. That's just opinion, and I'm not going to be so arrogant to suggest there is some kind of "minimum" resistance value for Act 3 or anything. But, I definitely think a smidge more resistances would help him out a ton.
The one thing I would say, in general, for non-sacrifice builds, is that you want enough pet survivability such that your pets stay alive til the CD is up in the vast majority of circumstances. If you cannot do that then your pets are almost wasted. Survivability is definitely not optional for pet builds, it's just a question of how much will you take.
With my current gear, they tank just fine, heck if I got in some Life regen in my gear and put in Fierce Loyalty, they would practically be invincible.
My problem is that there are a few abilities that do a lot of damage and don't get put in the AOE reduction and when I face those they just melt. Oh and there is a damage cap at 100% life of the dogs (exploding maniacs will gib the dogs)
List of things that I think should be an AOE reduction for pets.
Electrified mobs.
Act 2: Burning guardians, they put a fast ticking fire on the ground that doesn't reduce in aoe damage, but the pets don't know how to get out of it.
Act 3: Azmodan burning ground (not as bad since you can just resummon after each phase).
Act 4: Diablos burning ground: BIG problem. He casts it frequently and will melt all your pets if it lands in melee range.
The good news is some of it they are really good. Ghom in Act 3 the pets sit in poison clouds and are like: Sup!
Yeah, the kamakazi monsters in act3 were absolutely painful. They 1-shot dogs and nearly did the same to my garg, instantly leaving me open to be next. I ate a few deaths trying to maintain pace in act3 and ended up bringing the pace down a bit and making sure to lob a few firebombs into any unknown doorways, chokepoints, etc.
