Yea, so my Monk has beaten the game, but farming Act3 inferno without dying a LOT is not even worth trying.
To start--my monk and wizard have very similar stats unbuffed. ~700 resists, regen stats (LoH on Monk, Life Per second on Wiz), wiz has a little more unbuffed DPS (~35k wiz, 30k monk), 40k HP.
But I feel that my wizard farms VASTLY better.
The wizard has no problems with virtually any type of elite pack of any kind except a BADASS phase-beast pack.
The monk has problems with: fire chains, molten, desecrator, plagued maybe, arcane sentry maybe, horde maybe, vortex maybe....like seriously lots more too and little gay combinations.
Is this typical or is there something I am MISSING BIG TIME????
Without posting your build we cannot make any recommendations for you except the following general comments:
Monk has to facetank while Wiz doesn't (not always), this means Monk needs more mitigation.
Your wiz probably has escape tools.
Serenity is not an escape tool, if you get surrounded you still will die because you are a monk you do not instagib. Serenity is an offense tool to dps through certain situations.
This leaves you with picking certain things such as:
Deadly reach (as a safer kiting secondary to FoT)
or Dashing Strike
or LtK knockback rune
or BoH fear
or Mystic ally earth ally
Until you can sustain a battle vs elites, get more mitigation or tools or skills.

Ah simple...Resist All way too low...aim for 1k total resists with OWE,
Also at the moment Blinding Flash is way gimp vs anything dangerous - faith in the light will be nice in 1.04 for 2h SSS builds but 3 seconds is useless when you don't do spike damage.
For mobility try Dashing Strike
or Lashing Tail (Sweeping armada), it punts them really far allowing a nice split
or even Deadly reach Foresight (or the armor one if it helps you), because deadly reach actually allows you to kite and fight without touching molten, or FoTing into 5 arcane beams.
Attack speed. With smart use of cds you can face tank stuff long enough to kill something with that LoH you have - IF you hit things fast enough. I'd suggest getting your attack speed close to - or preferably over 2.0 for both weapons. Everyone is going nuts about crit and crit damage, but some seem to forget ias and that gimps them severely. I run with 650ish all resist and 5,9k armor and there is no need to move from anything besides arcane beams (and those I usually just Serenity-bubble to skip moving) when killing stuff in Act III. Don't ignore armor or resistances, but with high enough LoH and high enough attack speed you can survive even with little less of them.
Elites on Act 3 frustrate everyone, including me for about 2 months. My suggestion would be to upgrade your weapons. Your dps is too low to roll through act 3 and abuse Elites. If you are going to dual weild act three i would aim to have at least a DPS of 35k. This makes guys die before they even have a chance to even touch you. This will help you clear out the fodder and focus just on Elites. Once you can do that you will be suprised how fast they can fall. Ya you can still die but you will steamroll most of them. I would look for weapons that have LOH, Socket and Dex 100+. Put an emerald in the socket for more crit and soon your dps will go through the roof. Both of my weapons total cost me about 20 mil but they were worth it to me. Just my suggestions
Here is my profile and i am finally able to roll through act 3. Yes i still die when i get certain nasty mobs but it is not that often.

I don't understand why a monk has to have millions of millions of millions of gold, in his gear, in order to farm for gear lol
Also my problem is being insta-gibbed by things like stack desecrates or arcane sentries, not just general wear and tear
Also, I swear there is some conspiracy going on because when I play my wizard everything is mortars and when I play the monk everything is fire chains and molten

Because if you have a farmer than can do runs twice as fast with out breaking a sweat then you can get more doen and then more items to use or sell or sit in your stash. Why should your farmer just barly get by. Make him hit harder and faster so your return is even greater. Takes time with expensive farmers but worth it too me. Again just one strategy.
Wizards are super strong. My Demon Hunter is about 15 levels higher at 53, but sometimes I just want to stop leveling her because my wizard seems to kill things more efficiently (comparing Nightmare between both classes).
TL;DR: If you wanna play your monk, get more resist.

When I grow up, I want to be a frill-necked lizard.
Most important surival tip for monks or melees in general: use shift button and be aware of your positioning all the time. Having similar or higher defensive values won't help if you just eat 'everything' avoidable on accident. There are times when you want to do that on purpose but common sense should teach you do "don't stand in shit" as a general rule.
There should be no problem with plagued or desecrator, maybe some issues with fire chains and molten due to how the mob ai works - but if you have an escape route that's regulary dealable. Vortex + anything fancy can screw you up, that's what your defensive cooldowns are for. And for arcane beams: step away from their spawns, simple as that. I hardly doubt your wizard loves eating damage from it.
Also at the moment Blinding Flash is way gimp vs anything dangerous - faith in the light will be nice in 1.04 for 2h SSS builds but 3 seconds is useless when you don't do spike damage.
Uhm, just use blind and breath of heaven before activating sweeping wing - that's a permanent 45% buff to your main damaging ability since it snapshots your stats on the cast. That's why everyone is using blind, but it's interrupt comes handy in times as well for sure.
Thanks for point this out, but for his gear level SW is only to augment the already very decent FoT. The only time that SW starts to take over is when Crit change and Crit Damage is high enough so that the unbalanced LoH coefficient on thunderclap (which procs the 20%x3sec weapon damage) starts to feel like exploiting. But I guess everyone is taking advantage of FoT while they can heh....
I mean, all this is well and good, and it will probably help if I try it,
But it really has no comparison to how faceroll and ridiculously easy wizard is.
Honestly you guys should try one lol
Didn't you complain elsewhere how A3 was too hard with your wizard? Now it's easy and faceroll?
Stop wasting people's time!
Actually, this is true, I was complaining about my wizard at one point. But then I added 1300 life per second to my wizards build without losing any resistances or DPS and hes fuckin' godddlike now. No one told me about life per second, I just took a risk and dropped some gold on it, and it worked beautifully.
That's sort of the point of this post actually. I asked if I am missing something huge on my Monk.
That said, I have recently been using Serenity, Lashing tail kick, breath of heaven, and actually Overawe mantra lately.
I try to kick the plagued / arcane / molten / desecrator mobs around a lot so they stay out of their own ground effects. Makes a pretty big difference.
As for the spirit generator, I think FoT-thunderclap is miles ahead of everything else for its damage, uses for the teleport, and LoH generation. Honestly I dont think any thing comes even close. I tried Deadly Reach and that just seemed.....pointless and crappy.
In addition, I find it rather easy to use shift and click very close to my own character so he doesnt accidently teleport into things.
With the 1.04 changes I think monk will be in a much better place. And I'm gonna keep practicing and see how good I can get.
ATM wizard is still a bit easier but I WANT my monk to surpass him, I've been hoarding gold for the monk specifically; Monk is just a little more exciting and you can kinda take pride in your work more.
I would also try putting your fist in the MH position, to boost attack speed, and maybe swap your emerald for an amethyst to boost LoH. I was stuck in the same place for a while, but with higher LoH and attack speed, act 3 became quite farmable.

Actually dude, changing the hand ur weapons are in does not matter. It looks like it does, but then just hit shitft and attack one time, and it alternates to your other hands attack speed. They switch off.
But after playing some more I noticed wallers in combination with certain things are a HUGE problem. Hopefully 1.04 will help this.
They wall me into a massive cage and im stuck on molten / desecrate / plagued / arcane, and get raped by fire chains.
In addition, fire chains mobs are ridiculous. They are always just running all around you chopping you up with that shit. again 1.04 should help.
I'm going to actually try Inner Sanctuary and its various runes, because on activation it gives a massive knockback to anything within it, which might actually knock them out of it even if theres 23523 walls around me.
Lashing tail kick becomes useless when theres walls everywhere.
If u wanne run dw then u need the gear to support it. So if u dont have the dps and cant outgeared a given inferno act its not worth to try it. Other then repairs u wont get much. Farming is about to OUTGEAR the act u wanne farm and being as fast in killing things as possible. If u cant do it in act3 then try farming act2. Plain simple isnt it?
F.e.if u need triple the time to clear act3 inferno compared to act2 then u r wasting your time. U missing out 3 times the loot from act2. Witch havin the same potential of being decent/good/realy awesome.
U clearly have no clue about gearing up. U read a guide about how to setup the skills/runes/passives and what statvalue u should aim for and think "ok here im ready to go". Witch is clearly not the case. With half of a brain u clearly would use sword&board since u get more value from a shield in the current state of your gear...But following the fotm u went dw and suffering in act3 inferno...
So a few more hints for u...
Running with loh using a kinda slow weapon for main or offhand u need some attackspeed from gear too to boost your incoming heal. U r at 1,49 attackspeed atm right? If u want loh to support u in act3 u need way higher attackspeed. U lack res/armor so loh should make up for the more incoming dmg witch isnt the case atm. Simply u cant outheal the incoming dmg with your current dps to kill packs fast enough. U have to kite or dying once or twice on some packs(depends on the affixes i guess).
So u can try either raising your dex and attackspeed to have more healing and higher dps or switch to sword&board for havin better defense without loosing much dps at all. A nice shield will come with at least 8% crit, +60dex and +70res witch would support your current gear far more the running dw with a slow loh main or offhand.
I would also try putting your fist in the MH position, to boost attack speed,
It doesnt matter if u equip the fistweapon in main or offhand in regards of attackspeed while dw...
Dude it's like youre trying to say a shield is going to make me go from instant-death in certain situations to surviving?
They only give like 9% armor damage reduction and crappy shield block, it's not going to make a difference for a HUGE dps loss
A shield with a good amount of dex and crit chance won't substantially reduce your DPS. In addition if it has a good amount of block amount, and a block chance of 25% or higher, it will mitigate a LOT of damage. Until I geared up enough to DW properly, sword and board + a good shield was the only way I could survive A3. The difference is surprising.

Are you trying to suggest running sword and board without LoH at all or what?
Cuz if I use my lower DPS LoH 1hand my DPS goes down like crazy. I have a shield.
And if I dont use LoH at all, well.....that seems dumb
But again, the problem is not sustained defense. I can handle like 50% of packs fine.
It's fire chains and various ones that suddenly surround me with their affixes and I go 100%-->dead instantly
With half of a brain u clearly would use sword&board since u get more value from a shield in the current state of your gear...But following the fotm u went dw and suffering in act3 inferno...
however I do understand people not using a shield. Imho a shield is something for a paladin or so... not proper monk style. This is about fun, and for me a monk with a shield is not fun... maybe this is stupid, but I don't think I'm the only one with this opinion. Then of course I don't come here to complain how I die too much, so I guess I'm fine
It's similar with those people who clear A2 with MoE and then move to A3 and change to MoC because someone said "kill stuff before it kills you", and then they get killed by white mobs
Furthermore, I have a shield with 8% crit, 60 all resist, 65 dex and 78 stamina, and it gives me 3% armor reduction and 1% resistance reduction...
And 18% chance to block 3800-4700. That's about like blocking the average damage of that multiplied by .18 all the time. That's 765. 765 off of every hit in theory. Uhmm yea....
Oh and by the way, it reduces my damage by only 9000.
Oh and by the way, it reduces my damage by only 9000.
I dont think that your spear will give u like 9k dps...
For using a shlled and havin block:
U can block most things but groundeffekts/dots...So if u get gibbed by firechains u may think about the block and dodge mechanic...Just sayin...
Dmg inc > game rolls dodge or no dodge > no dodge > dmg "applied" reduce by armor and res > game rolls block or no block
Lets assume u r at 65/65 reduction atm from res and armor and u will get like 69/67 witrh shield.
A mob deals 50k dmg(witch is quite common in inferno and most mobs deal way more dmg) with 65/65 u get hit for 6100. With 69/67 u will get hit for 5100. So your dmg inc goes down by 1000 each hit witch is alot. Assume further havin 20% block chance and 50% dodge(kinda low estimated)...
1000 attacks > 50% dodge > 500 hit > 20% block chance > 100 hits reduce by 3,8 to 4,8k = 300 to 1300 dmg inc > 400 hits for 5,1k
With your current 65/65 u will get 6100*500 = 3050000 dmg inc after 1k attacks
With 69/67 and 20% block u will get 5100*400 = 2040000 + 800*100(easy way and opt out for (300+1300)/2) = 2120000
So u will end up with 930k dmg less inc. For 500 hits it equals 1860 less per hit. U still think a shield/block is kinda useless?
Havin a good shield can provide a hugh difference. Thats why monks/barbs were able to do act3/4 inferno pre patch 1.03. But its kinda pointless to talk about mechanics and stuff. Do what ever u want. Feel free to play a spec with gear u like but pls stop complaining on the forums about your monk and brag how nice your wiz is.
Yea, I do think its useless. Going from 30k damage down to 21k is horrendous. And as I've said, the things that kill me the most are ground effects like desecrate and things like fire chains in certain situations.
It's often walls that make the difference.
Honestly, I was also messing around in Act 4 today, and with the way that things horde around you and surround you and throw tons of ground effects down, like meteors, I can't possibly justify why someone would want to use a monk over a wizard.
My wizard can just run away from ALLLLLLLLLLLLL those things while steadily killing them. Like...it's insanely easy, almost no chance of dying.
The monk--it's like a retarded struggle at all times. Getting hit by 324 meteors at once, getting walled-in by waller elites and gibbed, getting just generally surrounded by 234234 things and unable to escape. Then there's those Lacuni humanoid things in Act4 that throw some kind of bomb which just annihilates you, and those very tall 4-legged things do what they do.
Wizard does not get hit by literally any of that.
