So just a quick question to throw out here to other demon hunters. Currently im a level 60 Demon Hunter with 24K damage (without ss) and 53.6K damage (with SS). Currently im progressing through act 2 inferno, right around the dahglur oasis stage.
What im debating on trying is I know with demon hunters there is basically 2 builds of gear, pure damage, or damage and survivability. Is it truly that much better to be a straight out damage with a lack of survivablity, aka no resistance, not prioritizing vitality etc.
Im finding it difficult at the moment to try and raise my damage and vitality as well as resistance in buying gear.
If indeed it is better go for survivablity, what kind of resistance should I be aiming for?
Playing as a pure glass cannon through Inferno (finally got Diablo last night), I can say that glass cannons are much more viable in co-op. Trying to progress solo through Inferno as a glass cannon is pure frustration when so many things are capable of instagibbing you before you even realize what the hell happened. Examples:
Act 2: Doom vipers with their lolstealth.
Act 3: Goatmen spearmen who can oneshot you from across the screen. Herald of pestilence packs. Hulking phasebeasts.
Act 4: TERROR DEMONS. Whoever designed terror demons should go throw themselves off a cliff. Also, Rakanoth with his blinkstrike and fast adds, and Izual with his screenwide AOE.
I would say if you intend to play solo, survivability is the way to go. Since the SS nerf playing as glass cannon requires full concentration 100% of the time and very good twitch reflexes and timing to survive stuff.
Thing is, i have 25k hp
400 res all
100k dps with ss
and i still get gibbed so much - its so so so so so annoying
i need to get into act 3 and farm away but i cant even kill half the elite/champ packs - which is the annoying thing
People say go full out glass cannon - others say go surv

Not to mention a goddamn awesome latency. With 250ms (like myself) it's almost impossible.
I understand most of you guys frustration as i used to have the same feeling. Both glass cannon and surviability gearing are viable the problem is that its only become smooth after a certain point is met with your gear in act 3 and 4. Why i prefer glass cannon? It was simply extremly cheaper and easier to get the appropiate rare and legendary to have the damage to not die because my damage is very high. Even reflect dmg i can clear in a few seconds most of the time i shooting 3 NT then waiting to smoke screen as soon as the first one hits the group.
The resist you would require to survive things like rakanoth teleport or izual frost nova is in the over 80 million gold set category. However for 10-20 million you can get the dps to zerg rakanoth before his adds spawn. Hell Izual frost nova is actually something you can plan on, as its always at 66% and 33%. He also yells something when hes about to cast. I learn that with my 200 latency i had to smokes screen when on the last word of his speech to not miss it or be too early.
My current dps without ss is 84k. I have 22k hp, 200 resist all. My templar have 98k hp, templar is actually very buff when stacked some hp. Mine can tank rakanoth melee for about 10-15 seconds before going down. Hell he can tank azmodan for the 15 second (around the time it takes for me to kill him lol) during my mf runs.
Also thinking ahead of the incoming hp nerf, glass cannon will be super easy if monster health is really reduced by any significant ammount. If they go even 20% lower for exemple every no extra health or shield enemy will die in 3 crits.
I am currently using a glass cannon build, as it was much easier to obtain the gear. 106k dps with SS, 35k without. Currently in act 3, attempting to farm Seigebreaker. It has quickly become a royal pain in my ass though, as I am not yet able to take on all Elite packs (most actually), considering for some reason my attention span is kicking me in the face. I was at 48k with 500 as my lowest resist and was still getting one-shot by everything... Decided that since I was curb-stomped either way, why not push for extreme DPS.
I got an 976.8 dps bow with 240-612 arc dmg and 67 crit dmg to drop off of Seige the other night with no stacks, only switched to my MF set (105%). Has helped some but I am having no luck getting upgrades and the rediculous prices on the AH at the moment aren't helping at all.
I would suggest going glass cannon first, and try to farm enough gold to get good survivability gear. You can't do it the other way around. You need too much gear to make survivability gear work. A good glass cannon set that will do at least 100k dps will cost you less than 5 mil I'm sure, with the prices that are out now. With survivability gear, you would be lucky to get 1 good piece for that much.
Just killed (FINALLY !!) Diablo inferno (requires a perfect fight and luck with clones xD) in full glass canon mode
44k hp, 100k dps with SS (around 45k without SS..i think), little to no resistance (maybe 20% in fire resist thats all).
I play with elemental arrow (fear rune), empale (stun rune), the 80% snare trap, the discipline cooldown (with healing for the really really really annoying reflect damage packs and Smoke Screen ofc
I didnt even bother with leech life and demon power... quite useless if you get oneshotted most of the time
Yes I got oneshotted quite a lot but all in all, it's really fun to play and it requires skill, love my DH
44k hp or 5k theres no difference in inferno, still one shot, that only means that poison and void zone dont one shot me
how can you even be at 5k hp ?
Average items have some vita anyway

Yet both scenarios = me dead in 1 hit >.<

100k w/ SS
45k Life
400 all resist
...not 100% sure on armor b/c servers are down.
I can say I noticed a big jump between 350 resist-400 resist. I get gibbed far less and when I do it's because I tried to be a little to tanky.
Ofc I run with Shadow power: gloom as my discipline spender. Nothing can kill me with that up unless it's lasers or something similar.
