It's widely agreed that crusader single target DPS is very lack luster and Blessed Shield is no exception. Blessed Shield is currently preforming very well in groups of targets of 2 or more but falls off extremely hard when attacking one target. This is due to the lack of ricochet targets which is a major part of why Blessed shield is so strong with more than target. The change that i propose is that Blessed Shield would be able to bounce off the crusader if no other targets are present. I feel like this would greatly improve the skill in single target situations without buffing the skill in multi-target situations. What do you guys think?
Blessed Shield is already the most popular ability for crusader secondary. It has one flaw, the one you described. If it didn't; it would piss all over any other spell we have.
Single target is only lacklustre if you don't play Holy.
Shield Bash- Pound crits for 30 million on elites for me. With my Piro Marella or w/e the hell its called it costs me 15 Wrath (note: Thats the crafable Cru shield that *DOESN'T REQUIRE A WHITE SHIELD TO CRAFT o.O*
So its Blessed Shiled to clear the rift; Shield Pound to polish off the boss. My next step is to work in Area Damage% to 75+ then my shield pounds can smash anything nearby for 20 mill+ too. Don't think it will work amazingly; but interested in trying it out.
Judgement > Akkarats > Shield Pound x10 = dead boss.
Out of interest when it "bounces onto the crusader" is it going to be hitting us for 10 million too? I mean I'm immune to Arcane and I think the game considers arcane + holy the same damage type (it has the same resistance certainly) so it wouldn't bother me but was there not already some aggro over BleShi killing ppl with friendly fire?
I assume the ricochet off the crusader would deal no damage. It would be insane if it did.
I agree that giving this change to blessed shield would make fists of heaven, blessed hammer, and sweep attack even less of interesting options over blessed shield. However, I feel like the drop in overall DPS from 2 targets to 1 target for blessed shield is a lot larger than the other skills. I feel like switching skills mid rift to kill the boss isn't the way in my opinion the game is meant to be played especially when your build is so closely connected to the gear you have via %ele and %skill damage affixes. Perhaps, an overall damage nerf coupled with this single target buff would make it more on par with the other skills.
Or just stick on a rune "Increases the damage of Blessed shield to X%, but Blessed Shield will only strike one enemy". That way you use Shatter/Combust/Whatever for AoE, then swap to we'll call it "focused shield" for bosses.
Or yeah just swap to Shield Slam, because that move is boss.

If 740% weapon damage + 500% of shield block is 30 million, how 75% is 20 million? o.O

75% area damage. So 75% of hit total damage, not weapon damage.

I'm not claiming to be correct but I understood Area Damage worked like so : Any time you deal damage there is a 20% chance to proc your area damage which will hit for "area damage%" of the hit in a 10 yard radius. If it works that any hit you do deals "Area damage% of weapon damage" in a 10 yard radius its probably the weakest stat they have EVER introduced
I'm pretty sure Aeneas is right, you have a 20% chance to inflict damage equal to your Area Damage % whenever you hit.
So say you have 50% area damage, you hit some guy for 1mil, Area damage procs you deal 500k to everyone withing 10 yards. This is why Sever was so fun with Area damage, because the lolkill proc could splash and deal... unintentionally hilarious amounts of damage to everyone in range.
It is, in my opinion a SUPER underrated stat. I kinda wish they'd built the Crusader a bit more around Splash damage and a bit less around CDR, would have been more fun IMO.
I can't stand CD based abilities; I enjoyed my monk because I used very few; Think it was Cyclone kick, Dashing Strike, Sweeping wind, Mantra, Hundred Hand Slap, Explosive Palm. Awesome. Crusader can't have that alas. You pretty much have to build around Akkarats Champion (thanks for the exciting set armour, no really >.>) and even our laws can't be spam empowered >:(
Do'nt get me wrong, I'm a paladin; monk was the closest approximation to that until RoS so I'll play Crusader now forever (had a brief spell as a lolzard at 2.0) just wish it fit my preferred gameplay more
Sorry bit off topic *cough*

I only said it was rubbish if it was the second
