The Golden Bird quest is clearly a reference or inspiration from The Golden Bird tale by the Grimm Brothers. It is a tale that involves a long line of trading items for other items, just like the quest makes you do.
-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
But it's Lightsabre in Diablo. There is also a form of Sabre called a light Sabre. It's a smaller, less heavy version of the heavy or large Sabre, naturally. Though in actuality the sword in question is actually a form of Crystal Sword.
However I do feel this is probably some reference to Star Wars
It does bear some resemblence to a Light Saber

There is an act II mercenary called Azrael. Other than that, there is no Azrael in Diablo (Yet). Unless of course for the random name generator for unique monsters. "Azrael the undying" or some other randomly generated name.
There is no super unique (Boss) monster called Azrael. Nor is there an Azazel (yet either).
You can give Azrael the merc a scythe if you want to, thus making him a grim reaper of sorts.
And while I am on the subject of Merc names, the Barbarian mercs are named after famous viking warriors from myths and movies, namely 13th Warrior. Almost all of the characters from the 12 norse men i nthat movie appear as barbarian merc names.
There is an Act III merc called Khaleel. This name is similar to Kal-El, which is Superman's real name. From personal experience I have yet to see Khaleel as a Lightning skilled merc. He is always fire or frost. Two powers which Superman possesses are his heat ray eye lasers (Fire) and his Freezing breath (Cold).

Oh thats right, Azmodan. I guess he's the closest thing to Azrael. I wouldn't make the connection from Azrael so much, but I do make the connection from Azazel.
The Druid upon entering the Claw viper temple says "Snakes. I hate snakes."
Snakes. Temple. Indiana Jones much?
The Druid is Irish/scottish in appearance. Henry "Indiana" Jones Jnr is the son of Henry Jones Snr, played by Sean Connery.
On a side note
Blizzard took this Indiana Jones reference one step further in World of Warcraft. On the quest "Snakes, why did it have to be snakes" You escort a man called Harrison Jones. This is a clear reference to Harrison Ford who played Indiana Jones.

Nosferatu's Coil - Vampirefang Belt (unique item) is an obvious reference to Nosferatu.
I have actually seen that black and white silent film (or at least I've seen clips of it). Its... well... the type of film only a film nerd could really appreciate lol. Its also the kind of film that inspires directors like Tim Burton.

Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions
My LOD CD exploded the day before the nocd patch, and took my DVD drive with it....

I always figured Azmodan was named after Asmodeus.

Makes sense then.
