We can discuss favorite NPC's in the first Diablo as well, but I'll start off talking about the ones in Diablo II.
One of my favorites is Warriv. I like how he's pretty level-headed when you ask him about things. He's also voiced by the same guy as the Necromancer.
I also really like Hratli. You kind of sense a lot of power about him which feels kind of reassuring cause you think it's often just the demons that have the most powerful ones working for them. He's also very witty and I like his insights when talking about the Horadrim. Especially when he talks about them building a tower below ground and commenting on how they sometimes lacked common sense.
It was a shame they didn't make dialogue for Jamella and Halbu. Cause I would have liked to know how they got posted at the Pandemonium Fortress and what they did when they weren't working.
Gheed is too greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeedy.

''Zubin, I've always imagined you as a crazy raver. The kinda guy that spends all night dancing to trance music while waving glow sticks and popping ecstasy.'' - Murderface

I figured that was because they had been fighting in Hell for so long that they really had lost all sense of joy and, really, humanity. A nice detail if you ask me.
As for favorite NPC, that goes to Alkor: "Dammit, I wish you people would just leave me alone!"
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

-you drink water???
-griswold cant sell his anvil what will he do then, and id be anrgy to if someone took my anvil
-Big, big cleaver! Killing all my friends! Couldn’t stop him, had to run away, couldn’t save Them trapped in a room with so many bodies! So many friends! (Wail)
but i also like;
Lycander: "what the hell do you want"
"Horizon's Urinal? oh Horizons Journal"
Griswold: "almost anything quest related his voice is cool"
Cain: "This does not bode well for you my friend"
do monsters count as NPCs before they go Hostile?
-Lazarus: "abandon your foolish quest - all that awaits you is the wrath of my master, you are too late to save the child, now you you shall join in hell"
-Gharbad: "pleeeaase no kill Gharbad"
-Snotspill: "Hey! You that one that kill all! You get Me magic banner, or we attack! You no leave with life! You kill big ugly, and get back magic! Go past corner, and door, find uglies! You give, you go!
You kill uglies, get banner! You bring to me, or else!
You give? Yeah! Good! Go now! We strong! We kill all with big magic! (Laughter)" -Warlord of Blood: "My blade sings for your blood, Mortal, and by my dark masters it shall not be denied!" -King Leoric: "The warmth of life has entered my tomb"

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.

Totally. I loved Gharbad the Weak and Snotspill. Those NPC's in the hostile areas were a part of what made the first Diablo so cool.

oh and i forgot Zhar the mad
-what? why are here, here take this and be gone,
-ehaha your curiousity will be the death of you
Warrior "im sorry did i break your concerntration"

I think the most ueseless NPC in the first Diablo was Gillian. Besides not offering any kind of trade or services, she also never had any insights into quests and her gossip was pretty boring to listen to. At the most she'd be like, "Oh, you should as Griswold about that..."
hadriel. props for having to sit in the middle of hell outside diablo's sanctuary for a long-ass time. just wish he would help fight monsters like the rogue in act 1 bloodmoor

It is interesting isn't it, that Hadriel is just standing there. Perhaps he merely projected himself as an illusion and didn't have any physical presence there.

Or, the developers were too lazy-ass to make actual animations for a useless character

I liked Ormus cause of the Taan Mage Clan reference. Since I'm always so curious about the different mage clans themselves.
