So we have all been interested in a Diablo 4 for quite sometime and now that its finally announced we can start discussing about what we see rather than what we hope to see. I would like to hear what you like and dislike. If you are only getting tid bits of information because you didn't attend Blizzcon I would recommend checking out the VODs on Twitch from the streamers that were announced to live stream: Wolfcyer, Bluddshed, Quin69, Rhykker, Neratrite, Kripparian, MrLlamaSC, Leviathan111, Bajheera & Warcraftjen were the announced streamers but I don't think they all streamed or have VODs available.
I would especially recommend watching Quin69 and Rhykkers stream towards the end where they had the developers ask/ answer questions, though most things they answered was also brought up in the Systems and Features panel.
Personally I think the arsenal mechanic for the barbarian is one of my favorite take aways so far. I loved the Barb in D2 but hating limiting myself to either maces, polearms, swords, etc always made me frustrated when I would build for swords then find a BoneSnap for example. With this new idea you can have 4 weapon slots. Two for 1-H weapons, and two for 2-H weapons, each slashing and bludgeoning I think. They are used automatically depending on the skill requirements.
One thing I am skeptical about is the MMO aspect. I don't like seeing characters running around and breaking the immersion of a dangerous world. I prefer to play solo or with 1 or 2 other people. World events might be interesting but we'll see in time. I know others share the same feelings.
Lastly, what I hope for is a slow leveling process. I've always hated the 0-70 in a few hours in D3. In diablo 2, you worked hard for XP and building a character who most of the time was never completed even after months of playing. I would rather have a game with that sort of longevity. In diablo 3, I would be wearing BIS max level in the same day, pretty defeating.
Not to be all negative but there are a couple worrisome things I've seen so far;
Minor things;
Not super stoked about 3 tiers of legendaries; Legendary, ancient and mythic or whatever they were. That's essentially the exact same system as what's in D3 currently, and while I didn't catch whether a legendary can drop in all 3 states or not, it still creates the same problem of 'a leg dropped, however it's not mythic or at least ancient so that sucks'. Also SOJ has been dropping as a regular legendary in the demo, so if it can't be mythic then that's just wasted potential.
More major things;
Very, very small amount of stats on items so far. Not a fan of an item just giving more 'attack' and 'defense', and hey it's got 3% attack speed. If that's really how it's going to be stat-wise, they've made it on par with D3, yet even more boring. Armors just have 'Attack' and 'defense', Weapons don't have damage ranges, or attack speeds, just a single 'weapon attack' rating. Didn't see anything about resistance stats on gear, let alone anything defense wise such as dodge / block / parry / resistance. Worrisome as a whole so far for actual items.
Runewords! God damnit I have to say this one just really irritates me. They ALLLMOST got it right, one of the funnest gear / drops from D2, because man when I saw runes drop in the demo I actually cheered. However they've said a couple times that 'runewords' exist, but really what they mean is you can socket a trigger and an effect. That is NOT runewords my dudes, and what's frustrating is you can have both this new rune system, while STILL creating hidden items found through using specific runes in a specific order. The existence of this system almost certainly means there wont' be extremely rare runes for chase drops either.
No character stat screen currently. I haven't found anything saying this is just a WOP which means that currently, D4 is the LEAST complicated game out D2 / 3 / 4 by miles. The 'stat screen' so far is literally 3 stats at the bottom of the character page, attack defense and life. I'm pretty there's mobile games with more then that.
The MMO aspect. It's one of those ideas that sounds cool at first, but doesn't hold up after you talk about it. Can you turn it off? What about any sort of community created challenges, which will be ruined by the rng of having random players just in your game world? Giant outdoor bosses are awesome, but HAVING to have a party / random players just personally sucks. Make the bosses super difficult, I'm for that 100%, but not mandatory party bosses.
Crafting. Unless I'm just 100% wrong about how stats will be at launch, I don't see crafting in D4 being good at all. Hell, as it stands now, D3's crafting is better simply because of more stats to choose from / balance.
Drop rate and rare gear. Again, if things stay the course we'll once more have a Diablo game where rare items are absolutely worthless in the end game, and serve only as gold / crafting mat fodder. With such few stats, there won't be any 'downsides' to wearing only legendaries, and with 3 tiers of legendaries plus sets, I just can't believe them when they say they won't be raining constantly.
No mimimap overlay, just a full map and a small corner one. Do I have to say more?
So I'm excited D4 finally got an announcement, but now I'm anxious to see how it turns out.
Edit; Rhykker's video states that it sounds like max level will be 40 currently. That's just... I mean there's a proven formula that's worked for years; Max level 99 or 100, and the last 10 or so are for the hardcore people who play the most, because you end up in the end game around 70 +. Cmon Blizz, dont' 'leave room' for expansions, this isn't WoW and we don't need level increases for expansions.
Really enjoyed the visuals in the demo streams. Really like how the druid looked. I love all of the lore philosophy or whatever you want to call it. Definitely excited that they are making radical changes to itemization compared to d3, because I genuinely despise the gearing system in d3. Hopeful that they can make crafting more interesting, and looking forward to sets being less relevant.
Main 3 things I hope they change/add:
1. Make the max level 99 or 100, and make it hard to reach; similar feel to d2/poe. No need for paragon or other, separate, post-max progression systems. Make maxing feel rewarding in itself.
2. Actual runewords. Condition > Effect is kind of neat, and I'm fine with it at baseline, but they need to make some combinations of runes into distinct runewords that have different effects than condition > effect. The "best" condition for each spec will just be the condition that they can get the most procs per minute from, and I dunno, that's not very interesting; for example, a condition "Whenever you use __big cooldown ability__..." would be very weak, because that would happen far less often than "Whenever you use a potion..." and I feel like that limits the design space severely.
3. Make aspirational content, like uber bosses in poe. While most players will never actually do this content, its mere existence is very good for the longevity of the game.
That is a concern if true, but I do remember seeing a lot of items with bonuses though.Some from D2, D3, and new. Crit,cooldown, reduce resource costs, + to max mana, crushing blow, etc. I don't know if they just threw in D3 bonuses for demo purpose or if its going to have the same stats as diablo 3 and diablo 2 maybe some new ones.
+2 to light radius or 20% FHR might be a thing again.
Smaller bonuses are better. Then you're not depending on the item as much as and have more options available to help your build choices. I think some exemplary items like string of ears or shaftstop will stick out a lot more now and be more rewarding if they are unique in their bonus stats.
Keep in mind: the smaller the numbers the better. I don't want to see billions of damage anymore and that was the reason why PvP failed in D3
Runewords! God damnit I have to say this one just really irritates me. They ALLLMOST got it right, one of the funnest gear / drops from D2, because man when I saw runes drop in the demo I actually cheered. The existence of this system almost certainly means there wont' be extremely rare runes for chase drops either.
I hated the d2 runewords, For me, it turned into vast collecting and storage of runes on mules, and I never used them most of the time. Wasting time looking up recipies only to have access to weak or useless words was a painful experience. The useful ones were hard to come by if you played solo or legit, and even then it was a very small selection actually worth persuing. I used a few to level up and craft enigma later, but it wasn't a fun experience.
I agree they can have both system in place if done right. Currently what we have seen is great. It makes the runes immediately useful when you find them. Plug them in and continue going. I like the active and passive stuff, its like POE gems. Works well.
While that is true I did't expect this on a blizzcon demo of not even an alpha game. I think when blizzcon IT tried to help a streamer with some issues he said, "go to the details page" and it wouldn't pull up. maybe it was just disabled for now
The MMO aspect. It's one of those ideas that sounds cool at first, but doesn't hold up after you talk about it. Can you turn it off? Giant outdoor bosses are awesome, but HAVING to have a party / random players just personally sucks. Make the bosses super difficult, I'm for that 100%, but not mandatory party bosses.
Yeah I agree with this concern. I don't think there is enough information right now but I do not want to see random people running around unless its in a PvP zone or trading space.
No mimimap overlay, just a full map and a small corner one. Do I have to say more?
The world map? The pathing? What we so far is good enough I don't see why this is a concern.
My biggest concern: Bound items. I was totally hype watching streamers play and not seeing those disgusting BoP tags that totally destroy economies in games like this but reading into it further I understand they intend to implement that system. Once again, this is not WoW. Stats are not static. Trading should be totally open for ALL items as it gives you more purpose to continue the grind. Not having luck with a certain item drop but have found another you dont actually want/need? Find someone in a similar situation that has your item.. I strongly suspect the only reason this type of system is implemented is to discourage item selling for real world currency. If anyone has any other positives I may have overlooked, please share. Id love a reason to enjoy this kind of system.
Hi. I agree with most of the diablo fans. The MMO part of the game and people getting around it is not what I was expecting. Word bosses can be something fun but on a diablo game? I like my Diablo single player, maybe a party from time to time but that is something that I control.
I mine option D4 is the start of the Diablo MMO, something like GW2. It is a new way for expressions, cosmetics, mount, etc. to be sold. Will see, but one think I do really hope that does not influence in way, form or shape is the fact I need to group/party do be able to do/get everything the game has to offer, especially PVP. I really hate to be force to PVP, to have zones that you need to go to to get mats, gear or other thinks and be gank, etc. If the game force me to do that, I think I will skip this version.
Only time will tell what the game will became. From the interviews to the dev’s is a long way to be out. Next year it is only plan to have 4 updates from the dev team, so we have much to wait until the final product
most excited about: no monetization for power, no loot boxes. that was my main concern regarding a d4 announcement and glad they didnt go full retard mode there. oh and the darker, more gothic feel of the game.
everything else is still a work in progress so cant say i'm excited or concerned about anything at this moment.
The Diablo 4 reveal was overwhelmingly positive for me. I'm looking forward to it more than Cyberpunk 2077 which is saying something. I love the atmosphere, addition of mounts, more vertacality, and opening up all of Sanctuary to explore.
The biggest downsides for me...
1. The wait... I sure don't want Blizzard to rush D4 by any means but it is going to be an agonizing couple of years.
2. No bow class reveal yet. I understand showcasing the Barb, Sorc, and the triumphant return of the Druid but I always play a rogue/ranger type. With crossbows in the concept art I imagine a ranged character is coming. The five character classes at launch means an archtype is being left out of the base game.
I personally dislike the dumbing down of stats as well. For me it was fun and rewarding to know that you can use maths to minmax your stats and get the most out of your items, something maybe not everyone will bother or be able to do.
Why does the level cap need to be 99-100? Honestly that was the stupidest part of D2. It takes thousands of runs to reach even into the 80s and it basically only shows which players truly have no life and spend every waking moment playing diablo. Which no one should do.
The level cap is fine at 40-50 because the point of leveling is to only unlock your skills and figure out what combination to use and/or to experience the campaign storyline, I hope it’s pretty slow though and takes a long ass time to reach max level and beat the game regardless of what it is. Expansions need the lower level cap for increases that allows for unlocking of new skills/abilities/weapons. If an expansion comes out and simply just hands you new abilities and items without any type of play through, that wouldn’t feel rewarding in any way.
Also, I’m 100% positive the stat system will be much more complicated on release. They said the game is OVER 2 years away. They have plenty of time to add a shit ton of extra content so I wouldn’t freak out about stats and minimaps lol.
So we have all been interested in a Diablo 4 for quite sometime and now that its finally announced we can start discussing about what we see rather than what we hope to see.
