I'll admit it: I never made it to Inferno. I never even made it to level 60 or out of Nightmare.
Just a few months after release, I found myself gravitating away from DIII and off to other games. But now I feel Diablo pulling me back, and I want to try and "do it right."
Last time I mainly stuck to one character, a witch doctor, and eventually it just stopped clicking with me. I tried Hardcore and Softcore mode, I dabbled in playing only solo or only in groups, and I tried a few other classes but never made it that far. My RealID friends all abandoned D3 a long time ago.
As a result, I'm going to ask an open ended and possibly not very fair question:
In what way, in your experience, do you get the most enjoyment out of D3. What class? What specific play style? What goals do you like setting for yourself? Where do you think someone like me might have gone wrong who hit a wall in Nightmare and just moved on to something else?
I myself have started with WD and then just quit D3 for several months , then came back and tried WW barb -> It was actually fun to play D3, for very the first time .
WD is just a boring necromancer ripoff character .
So you should try go WW barb , they are the best , not because they are OP but because they are truly fun to play .
But despite barbs being fun to play, D3 is just not as fun as D2 is. I've recently installed D2 , made a sorceress and felt how great the game is , its hard when you don't have the gear yet it's possible to play and progress if you know what you are doing , unlike in D3 , everything is 100% gear dependent.
I ran across the same issues that you seemed to when trying to level a WD, so I tried a Wiz, and a DH. The DH made it to hell mode, but the others are still in nightmare as i quickly lost interest in them. I tried my luck at a barb, back when barbs were getting wrecked in inferno and found that I loved the mele aspect loads better than the ranged aspect. Once I got to 60 and hit that god awful brick wall called inferno, I built a monk to 60. I did not enjoy the monk as much as the barb and went back to farming act 1 inferno. The barb fits my smash and bash style of playing and have found quite a few upgrades since the last patch came out. If not for liking the barb so much, i would have given up on D3 completely, as the sillly and sometimes down right awful itemizations on gear just make me sick at times. I can only handle about 1-2 hrs at any given time, as the gear still makes me ill, but it is fun to come home from work and smash a few heads as I unwind. One day I may find something that is actualy exciting, but for now i just kill a few things and then walk away before i find that awsome barb only piece with every stat and proc bonus for every class other than a barb.....
You, my friend, are exactly the same as one of my real-life buddies who also used a Witch Doctor and never made it out of Nightmare before he quit.
1. Good time to play now. Witch Doctors are a lot more fun, it's easier to level up, loot tables have become dramatically better since the first month (you'll find out after you reach Inferno). Game is catered more to casual players now.
2. If you have friends who are still playing since the beginning, they can give you a major jumpstart. I help out all my friends that way if they have been MIA for a while. I recently just bumped one of my DH friends (who hadn't played in two months) from 60K unbuffed DPS to over 100K DPS unbuffed, also from 20K HP to over 40K HP. He's now playing regularly.
3. This game takes a lot of patience if you want to reach the top of your class. Not that everyone plays the game for that purpose, but the whole point is to have fun. It's a lot easier now since the game's release—I've been through it all—so you can play the game more to your own liking.
4. If WD still isn't your thing, there are four more classes for you to try out. Personally, I like them all, but mostly wizard and monk (as you can see from my sig), so I'm focusing on those two first.
On a personal note, I died for the first time in Nightmare back in May when the game first came out. My driving force was actually all my gamer friends who were all ahead of me at that time, so I just kept playing to keep up with them. My first brick wall was in Hell mode, but I managed to get through it through serious grinding... you know, RPG-style, since this is an RPG after all. Once you hit higher levels and difficulty, remember this is still an RPG type of game, so you have to grind. This applies for Inferno (not sure about now), back when the nerfs hadn't hit, Inferno was notorious for infuriating all sorts of people. But again, grind it out, farm more, change builds, etc. and eventually you'll get through things.
Hope I inspired you to put a little more oomph into your D3 efforts.

No one, absolutely no one can honestly answer these questions for you - because everyone has a different taste. Some people enjoy a smashing barbarian, some people like to attack from a distance, some people like having pets around them, some people want nice colors and explosions, ... every single class has so many different options and play styles. There is no way anyone can tell you "take this and it'll be fine". You just have to try it yourself :-)
There has to be a reason why you picked up Witch Doctor and made it to Nightmare, and there has to be a reason why you stopped playing. Ask yourself what it might have been and you might find a way around it. Keep in mind that the gaming experience is constantly changing until you hit level 60, because of (mainly) two reasons: the monsters keep becoming harder and harder - while in normal you can just run through everything and don't have to care about what you do, what you wear and how you play, it requires more and more consideration as you progress. At the same time, while leveling your Witch Doctor up you will unlock new spells and constantly change your game play experience until you finally hit 60. You might just have hit a wall and the next funny rune is waiting for you in a very few levels.
IMO that's the problem. Leveling up in D2 was fun, in D3 it's a horrible chore. The game's much better at 60 than below.
Totally agree, levelling in D2 was awesome because you had important choices to make, and each level was a chance for an improvement in power. In D3 power improvement in completely the result of items and you have very few choices to make other than what skills to put in your bar on any given occasion. even then skill choices matter very little untill you are level 60, most of the fun starts at 60.
Thank you all. I appreciate the constructive feedback and am glad to see the friendly diablofans community is still alive and intact.
I decided to give Barb a whirl and so far am up to Act III. It's fun, but it's normal. As others have mentioned, the challenge will be me surviving the leveling process up to 60. So far though my romp has been pretty satisfying. The game runs a lot better on my new computer than my old laptop -- maybe that will help me stick with it more as well.
I always start any new game by trying out 2-3 different classes and try to give each one a good 10+ hours of play time to see if i like the play style. That way i don't get 50+ hours into a game and decide I don't like that class. You might want to try that.
take it slow. don't just blitz to 60 it will feal like work. Make the game about exploring every little area not just flat leveling.
Don't spend to much time crafting or buying on the AH. If you play slowly you should get everthing you need from drops.
If you get stuck go the AH and buy a new wepon. I found that will usually do wonders for progression.
As others have said the WD was a little gimped at the start of the game. They've really changed that class. trying it again and see if you like the new setup.
I was in the same boat as you... I was very excited about the WD and started one on the first day; I got him up to around Act II of Hell and just hit a wall; I felt like the skills weren't scaling properly and that the class was pretty much broken at that point (heh, guess Blizzard agreed, at least a little). After that I tried a DH, and got her up to Act II Inferno, but felt again that I'd hit a wall; it was around this point that 1.0.5 was released, and MAN, did that ever make a difference. I was able to get more gear for the DH, but more importantly (and more fun), I got back to my WD, which I just poured the whole weekend into and had a blast doing it.
Basically, I'd say go back to your WD and give it another shot, because chances are your frustrations with the class before were totally justified but have since been fixed. Good luck!

i would choose my own religion and worship my own spirit, but if he ever preached to me i wouldn't want to hear it. i'd drop him, a forgotten god, languishing in shame; and then if i hit stormy seas, i'd have myself to blame.
I hit a wall in nightmare with my sorceress, switched to barbarian, and am having a lot of fun since then :-)
It's funny, I had just the oposite experience and went from dumping 180 hours into my Barb then switched to my Wizard and now have about 400 or more hours in her. IMHO you have to stick with one character for a long time, at least to Paragon Level 50 and then you will see the fun really begin. Get well invested in one character and it will keep you coming back for more every day. I love the farming aspect of the game and am currently working solo to get my Hellfire ring.
