First let me state that I have never played Diablo I/II. I know this is looked upon as being heresy but I was not into PC gaming at that age. With that said I have played many of the 'Diablo clones'. My issue is I cannot for the life of me figure out how to progress. I really do not want to use the AH because I find that it cheapens the gameplay. Blizzard states that the game was not balanced around the use of the AH but I find this to be a complete fabrication. There is zero way to progress in Inferno using drops that you acquire.
I would love to see a video series or evidence of a player progressing through Inferno by farming Act I to get to Act II, etc. It seems the only option is to wait for 1.0.3. The problem is this is the way the game should have been launched. I should be able to farm Act I to get to Act II etc. All I ever get off of the countless 5 NV Stack Warden/Butcher runs is garbage or sub 60 gear (why is sub 60 gear even dropping in Inferno, when you have to be 60 to do it).
For a player who does not want to use the AH am I basically stuck till 1.0.3?
Well the following affixes drop in act 1 inferno, there isn't a full breakdown of affixes by ilvl (i know i want one) but these are what i'm confident can be found since I recall finding them on act 1 inferno rares. Pick any 6 and you'll have a really powerful item well above what is needed for act 2 inferno. Might take a while to find the combination you need though.
It is possible to progress without AH (but why ignore it) using only act 1 inferno farmed gear but you might take a long time. This was what seems to be the original D3 inferno design. WOW Tier type overfarming content to progress. The upcoming patch shows that they're moving away from this design based on player feedback. Too many players do not like overfarming. Still, it is definately possible to progress without AH.
+60 resist all
+120 stat
+90.dualstat
+15% ias
+15% crit
+30% crit dmg
+150 armor
+300 hp per hit
Yeah, I kinda fell the same way. I play barbarian, and I've put in a lot of hours farming Act I on Inferno. I've yet to find an item that really makes a difference. All I've done is saving up gold to buy little pieces of gear once in awhile. At some point I'm bound to be able to go to Act II. I know it's all random, but damn I sometimes feel I've hit a wall. :-)
Well, correct me if I'm wrong, but I know that combining gems in 1.0.3 will be like 10-100 gold I think down from like 20 000 gold or something. With that said, you can spend those gold to upgrade your blacksmith and find recipes in Inferno (you probably already have; is the level 10 crafted items any good?). Blizz (Wyatt Chang) did say that they like the idea of using gems in combination with recipes to craft items to give that item the spesific gem's attributes. Whether it's going to get implemented in 1.0.3 I dunno, maybe the patch after that one.
I'm not in Inferno yet (Hell Act 3 level 59.5 lol) so I don't know the specifics. I'm also trying not to use the AH, but couldn't resist, I bought only one item, but I do try and sell as many as possible. That's all I can give you though...
yeah I've done about 50 runes of butcher with 5 nephalum. I got 1 ring that wasn't for my spec. So I'm taking a break until 1.0.3. I can do act 2, but seeing how champion packs can be a pain with spike damage that go from 1k to 8k out of no where. I rather wait til they fix the damn thing.
ps: Anybody find it incredible that butcher drops 100 dps wpn and scrub gear from act 1 hell. It's really annoying, I understand it's to make gear rare, but 100 dps wpn, come on.

Liking an idea, and actually planning on doing it are two different things, this will not be implemented most likely for a long while IF they even choose to use it.
The ilvl patch will confirm what ilvl those L10 BS items are. The problem is we have not yet enough data to know what affixes are avaliable by ilvl. Still I would suspect they should be quite good. A crafter tells me that he reached +40 resist all on his crafts, that doesn't mean that its capped at 40 but if it reach up to 50 or 60 that would be pretty good.
Edit: You could have rolls to make your wpn the following
ilvl 61 (perfect base stats)
+ mainstat
+ dual stat
+ hp per hit
+ socketed
+ DPS mod 1
+ DPS mod 2
but with only 2 of the following DPS mods, you're unlikely to break the 500-600 dps mark. You need all 3 dps mods to have a weapon that goes above 600ish in Act 1 inferno. If you only roll 1 or even none of the dps mods, it doesn't matter how many mods you get, you'll have a low dmg wpn. With stat stacking +200 (or more) to stats is very possible on a 100 dps weapon.
As the weapon is the primary source of damage for all characters, you really need those 3 dps mods. Limiting the viability of most weapon affix combinations.

AH is just trading made easier, if you don't like trading that awesome gear you find for lots of gold, and use that gold to upgrade some items, then that's your loss.
inferno is not meant to be progressed that fast at all. Months even.
But trading makes it easier because you can actually trade some of those useless for your class pieces for some gold and use that gold to upgrade.
TL:DR AH is just trading for gold made easy. Inferno isn't meant to be progressed that fast anyway.
For the gem upgrading I think they said they are only making it easier and cheaper for the lower level ones (up to flawless square I think). So the more useful/rare ones are still expensive.
Personal attacks always contribute to a constructive thread, thanks. The AH takes the fun out of the game for me. Perhaps the concept of killing mobs for my loot and using the items to progress is foreign to you. I am not criticizing the use of the AH I just would like progress without it.
To the rest of the posters thanks for the information...I suppose I'll keep plugging away at Warden/Butcher hoping for upgrades. Hopefully 1.0.3 hits soon.
