I've yet to get an answer here because the topic is a bit rough around the edges for Blizzard. At Blizcon 2010, the question was asked and then pleasantly given a non-answer which was "it's different for different people, blah, blah, blah... some people go at different paces, etc..."
Obviously, can't be the case because the question really is: "how long will it take the AVERAGE player to beat the game in Normal difficulty?" which has a definite answer.
No one really knows the answer, but I thought I'd post about it since it really does worry me.
after so many years of waiting, i can safely say it will never be long enough.

A Post Concerning The Real-Money Auction House:
"Except real money trading has always been present in Diablo 2. Except now it's going to be officially supported which will reduce scams, prevent the funding of the black market so your kids will no longer be exposed to dangerous life ruining drugs like the cancer causing marijuana."
Well you can't really judge a game by how fast you can go through it the umpteenth time. The first time around D2 takes quite a while, and apparently D3 will take a bit longer. I'm sure the hours it takes for each person will be pretty different, but its still going to be a long game, especially when you take into account multiple characters and whatever plans they have for the endgame.
yes, sadly, new games vs old games are shorter 99% of the time. Dont know why, graphics take up so much space? They think it is better pacing? Room for dlc/expansions? "always leave them wanting more"?
could be any number of reasons but it seems lately newer games have been shorter than older games.

Oh, was that actually you that asked that question? I liked it, and was also not happy at the answer they gave. If it is longer than d2 (as had been said before) then the answer should have been a definate YES, with no question... It all depends on endgame options, i personally hope there are different dungeons with different loot tables, in part, like wow, along with world drops that can drop in any dungeon.
I remember casually beating D2 in 2 maybe 3 days of casual play as necro the first time i played, maybe around 8 to 15 hours total. Hope the way they present the story will make me want to interact with it, search every corner, ect. Again, hope end game is challenging where i will want and HAVE TO gear up to beat it. End game will really show how "long" this game is, and i hope they dont just depend on PVP and say pvp = end game, wait 2 years for expansion, sorry.
All I know is that there will be more bosses beside the act boss per act.
Meaning Act 1 will have the act boss but, Thousand Ponder that rips your head apart, skeleton king, and the fat dude with 2 mace that charge at you. Remember that all these are act 1 sub-bosses, which probably has a story of its own.
So in my opinion, I believe the game will have more content which means longer game play.
Now, this is all different for others, they could go through the entire game in a week, and some may go through them in a month. There is no such thing as "average". Its not a test score, especially when every one's test is different, since blizzard is introducing more "randomized" dungeons and quests along the way.
