What happens when you die in diablo 3? Do you lose an ear like in diablo 2? which was pretty pointless in my opinion and do you have to collect your body? Do any items drop when you die like in diablo 1? I kinda liked that aspect of diablo 1 because of the larger reward in pvp but it would probably work best for players creating Hardcore Characters who can only die once.(if they are even bringing that back?)
All we know about this is that there's now a checkpoint system. I think they will do away with the body-finding system. Is it really good game mechanics to force us into occasionally impossible situations, forcing you to start a new game?
I'd like to hear about this too. I wonder if you still lose experience.

in Diablo.de: When a character dies, will it lose gold and experience like in Diablo 2?
Jay Wilson: We have not actually decided on the final death mechanic. I can guarantee that you will not lose experience. We are not urging to big penaltys for death. But we want enough of a penalty to be there, so that death has meaning! Like to lose a little bit time, some kind of decrement... We do not currently have a durability, but some kind of ... a gold cost is actually not so bad. And having the player to waste some time, that is certainly an element. Generally we kind of rely on the effect that players do not want to die. You know, you just do not want to. So there is no real reason to add a further "ding" to them for something happening that was already unfavorable to them. But we have not got our final mechanics on that, yet.
That's what Jay Wilson had to say in a interview last year.
Diablo 3 seems to be trying to play it both ways. By that, I mean they want to make the game challenging enough for Diablo's hardcore fanbase but "gentle" enough for the casual player/MMO fan to feel at ease with it. I can't say I blame them, even though I wish they'd just toss it all out and make a harder game more akin to the first Diablo. (With its total gear drops and warp to the town hub after death)
They'll probably warp you back to a waypoint with any buffs stripped, your health/mana bulbs sent down to 1 point, gold removed, and your weapon durability lowered. It gentle enough for the everyday gamer (No experience loss, no gear loss) yet is a big enoguh drain on resources to make hardcore types a little wary about pressing forward into dangerous areas.
I'm guessing its going to be like titan quest. you die you respawn perfectly normal at the more recently activated checkpoint. As a max there might be a gold loss. But I doubt even that because if gold is worth something in d3 then ppl will mule it all using the easy character to character transfer system jay also talked about. as for pvp and ears, yeah most people never picked them up so it was just a bunch of litter but its kind of cool. at least for hc its cool.

Apparently freezing yourself is fatal. HOW ARE YOU PEOPLE COPING?!
It definitely should not repeat D2's death scenario. I used to open up Portals before marching in to fight any Boss as it would be easier to get the tools when I re spawn. But it definitely was a huge pain. Having to collect your corpse and lose out on abilities.

i totally agree and at times it was cheap doing it that way, but as they (Bishok and Blizzard) have said they are definatelly making it easier to jump straight into the action!!! YEWW!!!!!!!
I wouldnt mind seeing them make it so that when you die you keep your sword and maybe abit of armour, but apart from that you have to go pick your loot back up
The annoying part of getting your body is that if you died with full gear, there is very little chance you will survive with no gear. You either kite them away from your body (prob will die) or rejoin (have to get back to where you were or maybe even lose game) or have someone clear your body for you.
I wouldnt mind a system that drops all the gold you are carrying when you die and you have to go get it. Although there are no plans for an exp penalty for dying you could also recover some exp when you get back to where you died. Other than that, while I don't like the idea of it, respawning in full gear makes the most sense.

Yea, one of the main things that stuck with my from the gameplay video was the fact that the Assault Demon ATE the Barbarian. Probably one of the coolest deaths I've seen so far. I wonder if that all the bosses will have some cool "finishing move" to use on you when you reach low enough hp.
I'd like to hear about this too. I wonder if you still lose experience.

if your in a party and your whole party didnt die then no penalty besides having to get back where you were lol
but always give the player their stuff and have 100% mana and life
it was retarded sometimes in D2 when you were a tank char and had to get your stuff before you fight which was pretty much impossible
just to die again or run like you got a wedgy XD
that way no body retrieval but time is wasted
itd be better that way since they want D3 to be a fast paced action rpg even more fast paced than D2
so instead of all those small things you just run back down and get back to fighting lol
also when you start the dungeons over you keep all the exp and loot you just gotta start it over lol
Be my Buddy =^.^=
i havent ever heard of titan quest i should look into it........

1-Return to last town.
2-Restart as ghost in area and find body.
3-Pay gold and revive yourself.
It was fun to be a ghost and find your body.
now that you say that i wcould rather that and maybe if you dont have enough gold you could respwan at the closest warp gate with half health

Your things would be there, but anyone can pass and take them...
Also, remember that in the siege trailer, the corpse of the barbarian remain in the scenario...
Go to the blue tracker on the home page, or the news. Its called "death and dismemberment" I think?
I liked the news, we know death will be different depending on types of attacks, creatures, critical hits, etc.
