Every time I view the cinematic trailer (I'm not obsessed, I swear), I can't help but think about the huge army in formation outside the Arreat Crater.
Do ya'll think this means a mass battle in-game or is the army in there merely for cinematic purpose?
In Diablo II, there were already lots of monsters, but there wasn't really a collective army. I wonder what this means as Diablo 3 appears to be taking on a more "epic" approach, at least according to Blizzard? At first I think to myself, "No way, it would be too much strain on the computer to have that many mobs," but then I look at all those ghouls at the end of the gameplay trailer and think maybe it's possible.
I was also a tad confused by the trailer honestly it looks like way way to many enemies, i guess im really looking for another d2, i dont like change very much.
I was reminded of the act 5 cinematic from LoD. I doubt we will see that kind of massive army in game, I would expect something more comparable to the Bloody Foothills. But who knows, maybe in the last act all of hell invades, and you are joined by the forces of heaven in a final stand to defend sanctuary, though that would make it difficult to work in a diablo 4 (hey, one can dream, right?):P
I simply love wave type scenarios. Dota still rocks hard!
Going off this idea -
Imagine a new scenario-based quest in Diablo 3 where you had to hold a fortress from an invasion for a certain period of time. This would employ the wave-type battles. I know it's been done in games before (most notably in RTS' like WarCraft), but imagine the chaos from a Diablo game world perspective.

Are you kidding?! The worst thing that Blizzard can do in my opinion is make Diablo 2 in 3D. I want Diablo 3 to be deeper and have a much more immersive game world. Deeper interactions with NPCs, many more quests per act, more involved combat system and a much, much larger game world. If they have to steal a few ideas from WoW, so be it. WoW is a great game. I worry that they are gonna tone down the Havok physics to make D3 compatible with a wider variety of PCs. Also, I welcome the new art direction, it's gonna bring Sanctuary to life. Sanctuary is a whole world. Somewhere there are flowers and butterflies and rainbows. I trust that the contrast between this and the dark places in Sanctuary are gonna really bring it to life. So far I'm loving what I'm seeing but I worry that Blizzard is gonna feak out and tone everything back down to D2 levels to appease.
I don't see anything wrong with having a massive in-game battle. Because I think its possible. Eight years ago, computers were nothing they are now. The game room size won't just be 8 players max, it will be more likely 16 or 20 players max in a game. With this possibility opens more opportunies for things like epic-sized battles. Perhaps there will be the option of joining a special game meant specifically for this one, massive battle that many more players could join inorder to acheive that epic battle feel. Idon't know about you guys but I think that's a great idea.
Daemaro, not what I meant. Just speculating that it looks like they strongly based their Caldeum design off of Minas Tiras, since bentic pointed out it looks like a similar situation.

Well sorry if I seemed so sarcastic, but there are LOTS of epic typed battles like that nowadays. Sure it looks similar but so do a lot of them. I don't think it makes Blizzard "shameless".

Think about that huge army in formation in the intro of Lord of Destruction? Would be cool though, I'm thinking AI director à la Left 4 Dead, but then I'd rather have Diablo than lots of new fangled wank and a bad core experience.

Your thoughts / predictions?
Kap
lol yea leave room for D4 geez
Your prediction is probably the most likely, a la bloody foothills. It still would be pretty cool. Think of all the loot to be had.
I'd love to see that, except not similar to baal's minions in A5. More like timed waves that came no matter if you had cleared the previous wave yet.

Just a side thought.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Haha that's what I thought it looked like too at first... Blizzard has no shame
There is no mass battle in any other movies or media?

Well with monster and humanoids, I guess the movie 300 is also under that category.
