Real Gothic gargoyles and statues don't look cute and friendly though in style, and the original Diablo and particularly Tristram Cathedral which we are apparently meant to be in was of a Gothic style.
That signature isn't just about that particular gargoyle, either, its about the a lot of the design styles they have chosen. Basically changing Diablo from creepy and gothic into more "high" fantasy theme.
Take that for instance, I wouldn't even know what it is or how anyone could consider building something like that in "real life", its added purely to look fancy and cast light and actually looks like it could have come out of "Bioshock" or that "other" Blizzard game. In a Diablo game I would have expected statues holding jugs pouring water, or for light, holding dishes in which a flame burned.
Congrats at keeping the thread on a straight line everyone, its good that everything is calming down enough to have a decent conversation about this.
Oh and Yoshida, take a look at the latest AOE, those models are hugely low poly and still look fairly realistic.

But because a selection of fans believe that this is what Diablo is about, Blizzard loses creative license? I don't buy it.
I think they look fine for the Diablo Universe, they are kinda creepy, especially that light thing. They probably will have fountains of blood again, they were cool.
Perhaps mindless demons. Intelligent or organized demons would not only pose more of a threat, but they would add a more sinister element to the game.

All we are seeing are mindless demons. We haven't seen a single shred of organization. We see a horde of ghouls climb up the wall and surround the enemy like they did in Diablo 2. We see skeletons which, instead of actually forming a solid line, slowly lurch towards the enemy brainlessly while they have their shield raised - hardly intelligent.
We see cultists which cast spells that, supposedly, take forever to cast while the enemy (us) are right next to them about to take them out with a huge attack. We see a big hulking enemy lumber around unintelligently while following the enemy that is closest to him.
These are not intelligent enemies. These are not demons that have a plan of action. If they were organized, they wouldn't come at us in waves nor would they be separated from their large army that we see in the cinematic. We see fairly unintelligent enemies running around not doing a thing to the world that they are around. It makes the game feel like we are on a playing field that we don't actually have any impact on.
Yeah, we can destroy some walls... but what does that actually do to the world? Killing some demons and having them leave a corpse? That goes a long, long way in making the world you are playing in, which is currently water-colored and high-fantasy, much more believable.
...in the petition signatures: (I didn't want to test the topic title length for fear of cropping.)
What if the people constructing the place didn't have the budget or resources to make it look that way? What if that's how it -should- look? Just a thought.
Cheers,
SmashBoy (like HellBoy, 'cept not)
Seems like a poor excuse. That garg just looks awful. I am not a fan of the petition but most definitely it needs to be changed.
As much as I hate the phrase, it just looks ...WoWish...
You want the whole humor of the Gargoyle? It was already removed by the time of the WWI. It was only present in the static media. The screenshots are an area from the video... where the gargoyles are not present as of the video. So the real question is which came first in production order; the screenshots or the demo video?
I hate to summon the unholy soul of a long dead BBS, but... PLOSTFU.

1st Of the bat I just want to say that I think that changing the look of stone gargoyle to eviler and giving it a more evil color is a step towards the right direction.
Another Suggestion in addition to that change would be:................Detalization.
Because the new model of the gargoyle uses so little polygons it looks like it has been carved by early Romanesque inhabitants.
I was also thinking that early Romanesque is more akin to WoW (except for a few early Gothic areas)
Diablo franchise has been traditionally set in Gothic type of universe. Just look at Diablo 1 and 2 and you can see that architecture and statues have very "carved in look" very high amount of detail, in Diablo 3 everything is Very "Crude" Looking. I Know it's because they were scared that they are going to make the requirements of the game too high, but they can make option to low detail for weak computers.
For example the edges of stuff are unrealistically sharp. You just can't get this sort of paper - thin edges in real life. In previous Diablo's they used 2d sprites that used to exactly portray what the artists intended to show us, with this one it feels like they need us to "buy - into" whatever is shown on the screen, the cartoon - esque graphic.
So there is always this feeling of "cartooniniess" Of The overall game.
I mean looking at the 20 minutes video and 2 major areas of the game and the games engine I somehow don't feel like in the final version it's going to improve much... More than likeley it's going to be same style but more stuff added.
Sure Dark colors and reduced shoulder pads going to help. but with such low poly count and absence of a real - time lighting system(besides a very rudimentary one they have implemented that is ages behind Doom 3, a game that came out 4 years ago) along with refelections on the metallic armor it's still going to feel "cartooney", compared to previous Diablo's.
I made the gargoyle to be at a similar polycount to the original in an attempt to demonstrate that you don't have to have cutesy or cartoon like graphics to have a low poly model. Yes even with the changes I have shown the game is still going to look more unrealistic than its predecessors, but for good or bad thats the style they have chosen, and I don't think stylization is a bad thing. Look at some of the fantastic artwork from artists like Boris Vallejo, Frazetta and Luis Royo, a lot of them are painterly and water color in finish and still look fantastic without looking oversimplified and cartoon like.

Exactly. One definition, a very narrow-minded definition.

SmashBoy (can smell demon seed from a thousand paces)
How does that definition not perfectly capture the mood of the first and second games of the series?
The true fans of D3 are silent
You get a super-duper sticker!
That's like saying true heroes sit back and watch the fight, much like the barbarian from my Thousand Pounder thread. lol
