How do you guys know that the rest of the game isn't going to be all "hellish tormented grounds". You saw the intro to 1 level of a game. Chill out, for real. The game will be awesome no matter what. Let them focus on making the game PLAY right, and not what you elitist "impossible to please" people think is the most important thing.
I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but honestly, even the catacombs looked like fluffy fairytale-land. I don't want to play a game that lacks immersion. Immersion comes from gameplay AND graphics. Now if the graphics are not true to the series, where the hell do you think it's steering? Right down WoW alley. I honestly don't want to play an updated Mythos. What enjoyment will you get if the game PLAYS right but feels crooked?

Agreed there. I saw the dungeon they showed and it doesn't even come close to Monastery/Catacombs in Act 1.
How many times do i have to repeat? The art style is the same for all the game, they wont use 1 type of cartoonish art style in one act and another type of realistic art style in another act, this kind of style will be all around the game.
Exactly my point
I'd hate having to wade through lego-block catacombs and hell's tunnels which are waxed and shiny like an 80's Rolls Royce. Where's all the grime?

That doesn't mean it cant get darker, open your mind a little. If the game gets ruined it's because of people have this set idea of what D3 should have looked like. I hope it changes just a little bit as well but just a little, a little as in, i'll still play this game for years and years they way it looks now.
edit:\\that and the fact thats its meant for ages 16+
When I first bought Diablo and Diablo II I had hide the game from my parents (who are pretty religious) because they thought it was the route to be a Satanist when they saw the screens and box cover, literally thought it was an evil game. How awesome is that? Could this game draw the same reaction?
If it really stays like this and the more screenies we get looking like Titan Quest/Mythos shinyfest the more uproar the community will generate. They need to either show us more of which is better or take a turn in the whole art section. I'd be happy to sign any petition there would be if it comes to that.

I understand where you guys are coming from, believe me. I'm a huge Diablo fan as well. The game is looking different than D2, but I think it is a welcome change. Maybe they could make it a bit darker, but I really don't think it looks as cartoony as WoW. It could use a little more "Diablo" injected into it, but I really do like the direction the visual aspect of the game is taking. I understand all of your points, and maybe Blizzard will make changes. I know I will play this game no matter what it looks like in the end. For now, I'm going to get out of this conversation because I don't want to argue over our difference of opinions. If you guys can succeed in making Blizzard hear your cries for change then more power to ya. See you all in game eventually. Peace.

That's exactly what I thought. The environments look like Titanquest with the color/style of Mythos. X_X
Meh, I didn't want to drive anyone out of this conversation, you yourself admitted it could use a bit more Diablo. That's what we're aiming at. It doesn't have to be a 100% overhaul.
I dont completely agree, Blizzard has changed, they're not the same Blizzard that had several independent small studios like years ago, when they found that World of Warcraft was so successful they just kept it's art style, that's what sells, they became big and unfortunately business and sales is a big part of what they care about.
Because back in the day Blizzard didn't care about money, they only cared about making amazing games for me. Those were the days Blizzard, when you hated money and gave away your stuff for free. Bring back those days.
Yes, this is how asinine your random assumptions look.

Well I think it would be cool if they tweaked it a bit darker, but for me... I still like it now. Darker D3 would only make it better. See now. We really do agree, but I just don't think it is as important as a lot of others.

Glad we found a common tongue
For me this just doesn't.. "feel" right. Maybe we have seen too little, maybe it's not as bad. But so far the world doesn't seem believable and I am not impressed. If it's Diablo then it's gloomy, no doubt about it. Personally I love D1 most of the (rather short, actually) series so far. The art style, gameplay and music added into something that was amazing.
I don't want Blizzard to have a fiasco with this, but if they continue with the same spirit it's inevitable.
Sadly they are aiming for younger audience.. It's all about money dude.
How can they be aiming at younger audience when the game is rated 16+
And I completely agree with this thread, the first thing that it came to my mind when I saw the gameplay trailer was that there were too many light color, and besides that most of creatures I have seen so far don't have the rusted defiled and decayed look to them, take the skeleton with the shield for example, the shield shines with a bright blue light as if enchanted, I prefer when it looked like some random corpse just stood up with its rusted and decayed equipment.
That said I have hopes that there will be some changes, as the guy presenting the demo said "Nothing at this stage is final" meaning that anything could be changed.
If the art direction stays as it is, I would be forced to give Diablo III an 4 out of 5 instead of a full 5/5.
I love the way Blizzard did some areas, but the interior in the video should be a bit darker but it shouldn't completely be like black and white. It should have this kind of cold feeling to it. Now the outdoors really need to be redone. It's just to bright.
Look at the gnarled tree on the far right. It's pure watercolor. The zombies aren't left white and red like say Doom, they had to add that blue-green sheen made popular in WC3. The trees remind me of Bill Waterson's (amazing) Calvin and Hobbes. The dungeon outlines are bold and blocky like the Warcraft universe.
Here's a close up so you can see it's not just a texture resolution issue. The dungeon blocks may be full of dents, but the surface is clean, smooth, shiny. Blue and green dominates and earthier reds are absent. You can see a characteristically oversized and blocky fire pot on the bottom left. The two small pyrmaid-like points have their edges smoothed over with light shading.
The lion statues....nuff said. But check out the oversized shoulder pads and bold armor outlines while we're here.
It is all very beautiful, but like or not it's a significant departure from Diablo. They call it a "hand-painted, epic" look instead of cartoon, but whatever it is, it doesn't communicate terror to me.

Would they really do that...with all the freaking money they have from WoW?

I think not.
Diablo should defiantly maintain that "Dark" feeling to it.

What's with all these colorful Trees in Diablo 3
