While I would love to have mercenaries, and even equip them in the game, I wouldn't be sad if they weren't present because I never ever used them anyway.
Yeah, I actually don't think we've discussed mercs much in Diablo 3 yet.
I would imagine they'll be back in D3, with lots more features. I hope they allow the hiring of more than one. Not at a time, but it would be cool if you could switch between different mercs without actually permanently replacing your last one.
i havent seen much disscusion on this so good thread.
Now i agree with a above poster saying there sohuld be diffrent types of mercs, temporary, hired, and quest realted. Besides that i think they should be stronger, be able to do some things for them selves, like heal them selves.
I honestly dont think we will see mercs. The comments made by Blizzard suggest an enviroment that promotes cooperative play and I dont think a computer sidekick is what they have in mind to promote this. Just going off there comments they want you to atleast pair(2 man group) up if not group(5 man group) up.
well Mercs will might be in, to prove this at the Gameplay trailer, when the barbarian rescues Cain you acquire assistance from the 2 guards that were trapped with him, they are most likely quest-related mercs. i also think that you can order them to do various things like follow, stop and attack (maybe even heal or do a type of spell, but it might be too much of a hassle)
Great point. However they are temp. There for the duration of the quest. One can assume. We could see them, but do they support a coop enviroment? I just want to know where they would fit into that line of comments by Blizz.
We should have them, and make sure they're a HUGE step up from D2: LoD's mercenaries. I.e., use their own potions, share those globe things with you 100%, no reduction on amount healed, be able to wear full sets of armor, have 1 merc of every class for the purpose of being able to wear class X only gear, talents which you choose to develop, etc.
I never really used Mercs, So I honestly it wouldn't bother me if they were included or not.

Mercs should Definatly stay and I agree with Jay fully on his 3 points on Mercs.
The backpack Idea is cool, but they wont make it so that you loose all your items when he dies...
Coz you might pick up something extremely valueble, then what....Are you gonna complain to blizzard about it....No, the last thing they need is more work...
Furthermore Id love to see you being able to fully customize ur merc ex. his name, gender, class etc.
And also the abilty to put equipment on the merc, the same as you, with all the same slots as you....
being able to create a merc close to you full strength.....
Aswell as the abilty to buy skillz for them or having them gain more skillz as they lvl...

Return to the roots of the game to discover what D3 truly needs to be the only new-age action-RGP since D2.
well if the mercs in the game didnt die, i think they would have stayed with you until they did, or proven otherwise. Blizzard really hasent commented on this issue.
Your making a merc thats strong enough to compare to your main character. You want a merc that can solo the dungeons no help from you? I think mercs should be what mercs are. A hired hand thats easily replaceable. You get into building these super mercs that are forever and dont die to carry uber loot? I dont understand why anyone would want that. Its like wanting the game to play itself no help from you.
I want there to be strong, capable mercs so that bosses can be tough as heck but still soloable via mercs.
And it's really fun to give mercs secondhand loot.

Ranger - Ranged Weapon Mastery (fire a bow or javelins like a machine gun!), Traps (MK style!), Pets (lions, tigers, and bears oh my!) - physical damage based
Demonologist - Bone Spells (Necro style!), Avatar (shapeshift into a demon!), Furies (evil spirits that hang around you, giving party bonuses) - mix of physical damage and magic
LEAP ATTACK!!!!! PLAGUE OF TOADS!!!!!
SLOW TIME!!!!!
No not at all what I meant, just being able to see a clear growth of the merc.
Being able to use his own unique skills as you do, and growing as you do, not being able to come close to youre strength but rather being better support when you need it.
Being able to cast spells etc. to aid you a bit more than what a single aura on Act 2 mercs did in D2.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
