Hey everyone, I was wondering, I am thinking about buying Diablo 2 right now to play it before D3. I am a guy that of course likes graphics, and was watching videos today about D2. The graphics are throwing me off. I am not trying to start a flamewar, so trolls, get out. BUT, is the gameplay worth it? Tell me some reasons why I should get it.
Diablo 2 is a lot of fun but it is extremely dated graphics wise. If's $20 now. I'd say it's worth it unless you're getting the D3 CE.. then it's included.
I don't think you have it in you to actually like games if those graphics are pushing you away. Its not like its a blocky 3D mess or something. Any half decent game is worth looking passed its graphics, you shouldn't even have to ask.

It's more of the, "I am very low on money" thing right now, but have enough for a $10 game. I do really want to play it, just trying to get some feedback on gameplay.
If you have no nostalgic link to it, it can seem really dated, cumbersome and boring. I'd say if you have a friend or something that has a copy, borrow it and give it a shot, but I would not pay for it anymore.
It's a great game but it's dated and Diablo 3 is coming out soon, as others have said. If you don't have money I would recommend trying out Phantasy Star Online Blue Burst, an rpg game, it is also dated but you can download it for free and play on free servers if your looking for something to do until Diablo 3. The server to look up is schthack if your interested.

For those that haven't played Diablo 2 before, it might be hard to get used to the graphics, i still enjoy the game quite a bit, i even started playing the first Diablo game some time ago, i really suggest you play through Diablo 2, its a lot of fun, and there are many classes to choose from if you get D2+LoD.
For what it's worth I've already quit D3 and gone back to D2.
This is exactly what I did. The delivery of D3 was not what I expected, wanted, or requested. For me, I broke down the D3/D2 products like this (positive and negative):
D3 = new, great graphics, epic cutscenes, mediocre storyline, forcing an AH to progress in a timely fashion,
requirement to be "online" to play the game, achievements, ponies (roll eyes), 4 players max, loot drops
are your own, loot drops (rare, legendary, etc.) suck
D2 = old, diverse skill trees & stat point allocation, dated graphics, creativity! (cube, ubers, crafting, builds, cows),
more forgiving and fun gameplay, 8 players in a game, NO requirement to be "online" to play the game,
epic item drops even at low levels are more frequent, farming is easier (bosses), ninja looting is possible (suck)
.... but that is just my opinion. I'm sure people will agree and disagree with the points I listed. Either way, Bliz/Activision did not capture my interest in D3 so I'm happy that D2 is still available to play online or offline.
I actually think D2's graphics have aged quite nicely. But then, I even think D1 still looks pretty good. Speaking of which though, with certain things all streamlined in D3, even just minor things like auto gold pickup, D2 might now drive some people crazy over things like that.
Kind of like how some D2 fans can't stand the fact that you can't run in D1.
the graphics really arent that bad, especially when you consider how old it is, i dont get where your getting this
if you do play and get into it, try median XL after a while
but in all seriousness, just skip it and go streight to D3
oh ya, i hate that XD is your character constipated or something? RUN
Just, the way the game played it was totally unnecessary. And monsters couldn't run either so it was all fair game. Plus the levels were smaller so that made it okay too.
I think D2 is totally worth playing. But....if you're a person who can't reconcile the value of older games with newer games, then yeah it's probably not for you. Like I said though, I think D2 has aged incredibly well. Some of the gameplay mechanics may be a bit frustrating for sure, but graphically everything is great. To be honest, given enough time I could return to it again some day.

edit: can't spell
And yes, the graphics are pretty dated. I think it's still fun to play.
I suggest you download the demo and give it a shot that way. Be warned, it may take up to 9 hours to download on a 33.6k modem!!!
*edit* Sorry, the links on that page were all broken. Try one of these. And STILL be aware of the 9 hour download over 33.6k!
