Build Guide
[GR72 Clear]
Hey boyz! Season One & Two - Rank 1 monk (world) here!
In my opinion/experience this build is currently one of the strongest possible monk setups for solo competitive greater rift laddering.
Please note: I always keep my diablo fans guides up to date and will be making adjustments to the guide whenever there is a shift in endgame meta! so be sure to check back, and vote on the guide!
To play this build effectively i highly suggest you watch the snapshotting portion of my [Video Guide]. Otherwise if you don't care then just follow the basic game-play strategy below:
Basic game-play strategy:
- Hold down spirit generator to apply EP & maintain focus+restraint
- Use Seven sided strike on cooldown
- Dash to maintain 40% dodge buff (when in combat)
- Use Mantra active to maintain buff (when in combat)
- Use Epiphany on cooldown
- Use the Dash for mobility
Skill variations:
- Inner Sanctuary - Forbidden palace (swap out mantra of salvation)
Legendary Gem variations:
- Bane of powerful - Swap out Bane of the stricken for a T10 Farming build.
Hellfire Passive/Passive variations in order of power:
- Guardians Path (best defense vs crazy density)
- Sixth Sense (best defense vs elites)
- Unity (when playing in group, and you don't need the toughness)
- Determination (when you don't need the toughness)
- Momentum (when you don't need the toughness)
When playing in a group:
- If you are playing with another cold EP monk swap Spirit Guards for Madstone
Stat Priority:
- Helm: Socket>EP Damage>Crit
- Shoulders: CDR
- Torso: x3 Sockets>11% Elite reduction
- Legs: x2 Sockets>LPS
- Gloves: Crit>CDR>CHD
- Rings: Socket>CDR>Crit>CHD
- Waist: 15% Life>LPS
- Wrist: 20% Cold damage>Crit
- Boots: EP Damage>LPS
- Amulet: Socket>20% Cold damage>Crit>ChD
- Weapon: CDR>Vit
you want dex/secondary resist on all your pieces(where possible)
People WITHOUT lions claw:
Do not attempt the build without lions claw (you will do 50% damage)
FAQ:
Q: Whats better BP or COE?
A: They're both theoretically pretty even in power but currently CoE is beating out BP on the leaderboards.
Q: Does CoE or Focus+Restraint snapshot?
A: No, they are both dynamic buffs.
Q: Why am i getting instantly killed gr60+?
A: Make sure your stats look something like this: 1200+ All resistance | 16,000+ Armour | 500,000+ Health.
Q: What gem should i put in my helmet socket?
A: Diamond. CDR = Dmg + Survivability!
Q: What normal gems should i put in my chest/pants?
A: Emeralds (Diamonds if you're HC).
Q: What follower should i use?
A: Templar. Why? Inspire (x1.1 ALL spirit generation).

Do you need an ancient offhand for this build? Or does all damage proc of your MH dmg?
I am here to explain how this set really works, with some rough numbers.
Madstone, it simply has close to no use. You are going to hit with generators between SSS, which apply EP on your targets. When you perform SSS, Uliana's 6PCs bonus is going to trigger Gungdo Gears affix. So, just stick with those gears suggested. I think it's okay for T10 rifts which you don't bother with hitting generators.
Finally, it comes to Broken Promises. For it to work, you need at least 60% CDR on character sheet. BP is likely to be triggered by your last few hits of SSS. With like 2s of SSS downtime, you still have ~1s of BP buff on your next SSS.
I was running with Madstone & Rorg before I have Uliana helm, hit like GR50.
Then moved to GR60 with complete Uliana set but in typical crit build(~55% crit).
Then I switched to BP and finished GR62.
I found this build really hurts my finger as I was hitting mouse button for SSS like mad
That's why I put SSS on "1". No pain from the SSS spam
It says at the top this is a seasonal build...
Do you think It's better to swap the templar for enchantress for this buid as you dont really need spirit regen and scoundrel will give you crit chance?
Other followers have nothing attractive to offer.
What passive i need to have on my hellfire amulet because im not sure???? I play most in group but sometimes solo so please help me hahahahaha
I attempted this build anyway on my monk disregarding the gears and leg-gem required and started from scratch with this build in mind, currently 175 in seasonal hardcore. I then began farming for the gear that i needed, but i must say, the synergy of the passives, active skills gold wrap and so forth is a f'n bliss! <3 i know it isn't much, but i can solo-farm T3/4 with only 380k hp like a summer breeze! Quin introducing this build to D3, was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Can some one help me? I have a normal uliana glove with dex, armor, crit damage (8%) and cdr vs an ancient one with dex, vit, attack speed and cdr (7%).
I'm not really sure what to pick in term of damage. Around 200 dex + 7% speed vs 50% crit damage + additiona 1% cdr.
what are the target items for the templar beside azurewrath?
how much CDR should one have? I`m currently at 51%
Why my dodge chance didn't increase like 24:44?
Can anyone answer me I'm not sure which passive I need to put on hellfire amulet? If I need the toughness, do I put harmony? I'm kinda lost there...
@Quin69 What to reroll on Ancient LIons claw to CDR? VIT, %DMG or Damage Range?
Sss whit inner sanctuary will do alot more dmg.
I know the answer now: both skills alternates with MH and OH. I can clearly see it because only one of my weapons is ancient => when I cast SSS, I can see an alternation of 600 million and 1billion crits. So in the end we need both weapons to be ancient.
I had a discussion with a random stranger.
He told me its better to stack crit hit % and change BP to COE.
This should do alot more damage.
Another person said its both viable.
Im confused.. ...
I really started noticing a major difference around 65-70% (with gogok I have a little over 70%) and its pretty ridiculous. You reach a point where you can just spam SSS, and not even worry about BP proccing as everything will average out in the end.
Hi all, great guide quin! tyty... One question.. when you get into hi level grifts. are you trying to time your sss with Broken Primises proc at all? or are you better off to just ignore the proc and go sss every cool down....??
at least 60% on sheet, ~70% with Gogok in combat, for this build to work.
