Build Guide
[GR72 Clear]
Hey boyz! Season One & Two - Rank 1 monk (world) here!
In my opinion/experience this build is currently one of the strongest possible monk setups for solo competitive greater rift laddering.
Please note: I always keep my diablo fans guides up to date and will be making adjustments to the guide whenever there is a shift in endgame meta! so be sure to check back, and vote on the guide!
To play this build effectively i highly suggest you watch the snapshotting portion of my [Video Guide]. Otherwise if you don't care then just follow the basic game-play strategy below:
Basic game-play strategy:
- Hold down spirit generator to apply EP & maintain focus+restraint
- Use Seven sided strike on cooldown
- Dash to maintain 40% dodge buff (when in combat)
- Use Mantra active to maintain buff (when in combat)
- Use Epiphany on cooldown
- Use the Dash for mobility
Skill variations:
- Inner Sanctuary - Forbidden palace (swap out mantra of salvation)
Legendary Gem variations:
- Bane of powerful - Swap out Bane of the stricken for a T10 Farming build.
Hellfire Passive/Passive variations in order of power:
- Guardians Path (best defense vs crazy density)
- Sixth Sense (best defense vs elites)
- Unity (when playing in group, and you don't need the toughness)
- Determination (when you don't need the toughness)
- Momentum (when you don't need the toughness)
When playing in a group:
- If you are playing with another cold EP monk swap Spirit Guards for Madstone
Stat Priority:
- Helm: Socket>EP Damage>Crit
- Shoulders: CDR
- Torso: x3 Sockets>11% Elite reduction
- Legs: x2 Sockets>LPS
- Gloves: Crit>CDR>CHD
- Rings: Socket>CDR>Crit>CHD
- Waist: 15% Life>LPS
- Wrist: 20% Cold damage>Crit
- Boots: EP Damage>LPS
- Amulet: Socket>20% Cold damage>Crit>ChD
- Weapon: CDR>Vit
you want dex/secondary resist on all your pieces(where possible)
People WITHOUT lions claw:
Do not attempt the build without lions claw (you will do 50% damage)
FAQ:
Q: Whats better BP or COE?
A: They're both theoretically pretty even in power but currently CoE is beating out BP on the leaderboards.
Q: Does CoE or Focus+Restraint snapshot?
A: No, they are both dynamic buffs.
Q: Why am i getting instantly killed gr60+?
A: Make sure your stats look something like this: 1200+ All resistance | 16,000+ Armour | 500,000+ Health.
Q: What gem should i put in my helmet socket?
A: Diamond. CDR = Dmg + Survivability!
Q: What normal gems should i put in my chest/pants?
A: Emeralds (Diamonds if you're HC).
Q: What follower should i use?
A: Templar. Why? Inspire (x1.1 ALL spirit generation).

Why is so much LPS? Is it better than LPH?
Hi Quinsane,
First, I want to say you thanks for your Guide and Builds.
I see one problem/bug maybe, in this description on the Rune : Impending Doom.
Here we see that this skill+rune :
Bleed for x% (EP) + Explode for x% (Rune Impending Doom)... But it's not true, dont have Bleed because this rune (...no longer causes the enemy to bleed...)
So, I want to say :
It's ok to Explode for 6305%... But with test I say that it's hard to pack the enemy and I dont want to take Cyclone, as I think that it's good to take the rune Essence Burn.
It's amazing to attack and see all enemy contaminated and explosed ^^
What do you think ? Thanks for your help
When playing solo you want to equip an Ess of Johan on your follower.
When playing in a group you might look if it is possible to switch in cyclone depending on the setup.
How can you spread exploding palm without madstone? o0
the guide used to say to have area damage on shoulders, rings and weapons before. How come you dropped area damage?
In the video you even said you expect everyone to put area damage on everything and pick defensive passives.
Did further testing reveal it not to be as effective as you thought?
Hmmm i see now xD
but... isnt better cube the madstone? cause you can avoid melee range and unnecessary hits...
and, how big the aoe of the WotHF is?
You're applying it initially with the third hit from your generator, via the 2pc Uliana bonus. On explosion, your Gungdo gear (bracers) are spreading it to other mobs. Madstine is a good swap for spirit guards for TX farming once you're comfortable. But you need the spirit guards defensive boosts for higher GRs.
Is there a CDR cap that we want to stop at?
Broken promises doesnt seem to wanna proc very often when fighting a big pack of mobs. I often go throu an entire SSS (14hits) without it proccing even at only 5%cc. Do you have any technique to force it to proc or do you just SSS on cd regardless?
It seems to be proccing far more frequently when fighting the RG.
If i hit 10 mobs. do all 10 EP-hits need to be noncrit? 5times in a row?
Also do you bother tracking the broken promises? and if so how?
It seems the difference is very small between the broken promise and convention of elements.
Can see it also on the leaderboards where broken promise and convention are all in top 10.
Problem is that it happens to often you do SSS and only get 2 crits and that really hurts your dps.
Also if you also want to play in 4 player party you might want to use convention above the non-crit as some classes can bring in some crit chance aswell which buff our damage while else we just miss it.
I believe that Area damage is still bugged for this spec is why he removed it all from his gear. It would be nice if he kept up a change log at the end so we could see what hes changed.
At bosses it is easy to only do SSS when your broken promise proc but problem with more monsters is that you hit more of them and that results in higher chance of critical hit which you don't want.
Ideal you always want to hit the monster on the side so you only hit that one and then proc the ring.
I found it hard so currently just use the convention ring but still think if you SSS right on the proc you do a lot more damage that way but I just find it too hard to time it right in for example 4man rifts where you have a lot of monsters together and crit more and not proccing the broken promise.
the dmg loss with crit chance is only if u are using the broken promise, i have 381k dmg atm
With broken promise, you want minimum crit (5%) so you can actually trigger the effect. If you have 17% crit, you are unlikely to ever trigger BP, and should use Convention of Elements instead.
how can I sustain with this build? i`m at 1200allres, 16000armor, 500k hp. I play in random groups para200 currently and I drop very often in low health and need to use pot all the time and kite.
Using this on xbox one, i got everything besides the belt and my armor core stats could be better (T1-t3ish ulianas) and my weapons do 2.1 and 1.9k so not real fancy and also missing gems but i can solo T55grifts with bonus and farm t10 easily. Great build, my first d3 character and hes amazing.
I'd say swap out gungdo gear for spirit guards and then use Madstone in cube. Make the current build the variant for when playing alone or parites without EP monks. The only occasion when gungdo is better than Madstone is when facing Huge packs on lower difficulties.
Madstone always works with ulianas, you don't need to start off with 3 hit generator to apply the EP.
Try to get ess of johan on your follower. It will pull all mobs together more often which makes the area damage a lot more and get bigger explosions like you see in the stream.
Also make sure you have as many exploding palms on the monsters as you can before you do the SSS.
I see a lot of you too worried about getting Broken Promises to proc and not checking to see what WotHF: Assimilation does. People that are hitting a mob to the side, and then SSS the rest of the pack when the ring procs are working way too hard for worse results. The ring is going to proc; and when it does, I definitely want high stacks of assimilation affecting those crits. Dash, activate Mantra, hit high density with WotHF, SSS, and repeat!
