I think Tyraels new look is better than the old. But we Shouldn't be thanking Blizzard for something that's unimportant when they should be working on the game. Get back to work you lazy bastards.
He was an important character in D2 as much as he will be in D3. They have basically brought back Sorceress, fixed Necromancer and changed him to Witch Doctor and have barbarian. Just because the name and look Didn't change Doesn't mean that he is less new and exciting to play. He has some new skills anyway, so it's nothing to worry about too much.
Personally, i think he was a very popular NPC. You see him often, especially in Act 4, but in many other places in the game. Although, i do think he will turn evil in some way. Maybe not the way you are suggesting, but definitely in some way. I really have no idea what you're on about with Cain, he is a member of the horadrim and probably wont go evil; but i think he might die in Diablo 3, for he is the only one left who can imprison any forms of evil in Soulstones.
