    Quote from "PhrozenDragon" »

First of all, the motherboard. I know everything goes through it, and that everything needs to fit into it. But what exacly is important in a motherboard. Is it just something to buy in order to it everything together or is it important you get something good?

It depends on what you want out of a motherboard, going for the cheapest motherboard will of course be an overall low grade product, prone to simply dieing. The motherboard is just as important as anything, a poorly made product will bottle neck other components.

You must ask yourself what you're going to be doing with the computer, a lot of graphicly demanding applications? Then a suitable chipset should be chosen, do you want dual video cards? Then chosing a SLI capable motherboard is necessary. Do you intend on having the highest tier of memory available? Different motherboards allow different types of memory. I'm not really sure if all this answers your question.

Second, processor. From my understanding, Intel is sharper than AMD with Duo technology. But what then do all there different models mean? And what is Quad-core?
Different models have different operating frequencies, different manu tech sizes such as 45nm or 65nm or 90nm, etc the smaller the cooler running, different FSB speeds, different L1 and L2 caches, 32bit or 64 bit, some models have 1-4 cores, different sockets all of these effectiing overall performance.

Assuming you have a single core processor, it's a single core on a dye in a single socket. Quad and dual core mean 2 or 4 cores on a single dye for a single socket.

So buying a single quad core would be similar to buying a server motherboard with 4 sockets for 4 single core processors.

Third, GPU. Once again, to my understanding nVidia are sharper than ATI in their latest cards, and SLI is also better quality, right? Either way, what cards would you recommend? What should I consider when it comes to these cards?
SLI doesn't necessarily mean better quality, if you buy a inadequate power supply two video cards can mean system instability. SLI really hasn't gained too much ground in gaming yet, when SLI first came out there was claims of 70%-110% increase performance in future games. Well it's been a few years now and SLI can yield as little as 9% increase in FPS to 33% increase, possibly a little higher.

SLI doesn't mean better quality picture by any means, it can cause artifacting and other problems in some games namely slightly older games. SLI simply boosts FPS,for games that would be extremely stressful on a single card and have a noticeable FPS drop SLI can help the problem slighly or majorly depending on the game.

8800GTS are pretty much the best buy at this time, the 9 series cards are coming out soonish so you may want to wait and the 9800GTX is said to be 30% faster then 8800GTX. I'm not sure as to what your budget is.

Hard drives, PSU, keyboard etc. I figure isn't all that important, so long as they provide enough storage, wattage or are comfortable enough. Is there anything relating to all these odd things one should know but often are overlooked?
Not really, as you realize, wattage must be addressed with the PSU. Inadequate power equals a machine that doesn't run at all or runs poorly.

Also, what about fans? Are any standard fans that come with the package ever any good?
They should be fine, I never keep stock fan personally, the custom heatsinks for the processors and video cards keep the products so much cooler. But I don't feel it's really necessary to use custom heatsinks and fans, I do suggest using arctic silver thermal paste instead of the supplied factory thermal paste.

Last, is a sound card ever necessary? I've only ever used the one on the motherboard, and I've never felt my sound was poor. Is it just needed for people who do sound editing or have surround systems?
Not really, poorly made motherboards have a tendency to have god awful sound but anything decent made is good enough for the average computer user. If you really want the best gaming/media experience a sound card is the way to go.

Wait no, one more thing. I'm thinking of having both Vista and XP on it, so I can play all my old games without having to worry about compatibility issues at all. Will that mess things up with programs not knowing what files to use, will things conflict etc?
You can either dual boot on a single HD, which effectively makes a single HD two, or you could just buy two HD's and switch between them when you want to run a certain OS for a certain application.

Two OS can't conflict, they'd be independent. If you dual boot on a single HD, give Vista 30gb and give XP 30 gb, and install D2 on the XP 30gb it would not be on the Vista 30gb.

If you buy a DX10 video card it will act in DX 9 for for XP, and DX10 for Vista, there should be no hardware compatibility problems.

However, here in North America (U.S.A.) the drinking and buying age is 21. I find this quite ridiculous, 21? You can join the army and die for your country but you cannot have a drink, according to law.

    Yup, that upsets me greatly.

The military can teach you every single way to kill a person, a lean mean killing machine, pysche you to think you're the destroyer of worlds and let you loose but oh hell nah you can't have any alc.

    Yank,

It definitely depends on the context used, if you're in an argument with a Aussie/Briton(don't see many Americans use Briton) and they decide to start name calling, such as "Asshole yank". Yank would mean "You're an obese, uneducated, Bush loving gun toting POS and I hate you and everything your country stands for". Yank truly gets the message through short, sweet and clear.

A lot of these people, when using yank, associate it with a slack jawed red neck. Yanks and red necks are completely different, in the U.S the north and the south are at times completely different countries as far as opinions go and they almost were different countries at one point in history.

Calling a red neck a redneck isn't going to ruin his day. Calling a yank a red neck may spark some anger, not sure if a redneck would actually care if they're called a yank, probably pull out a flag or something.

I couldn't think of any derogatory names for Aussies, the only thing I could fester up was calling an Aussie a manaroo. But that's pretty sweet sounding, perhaps mount a laser on the manaroo to add +10 cool points.

What irks me is that people whole heartedly believe that the U.S went to Iraq to slaughter innocents.

They fail to realize the reason Iraq even exists yet is because the U.S is attempting to keep innocent casualities to a minimum, rid of the sinister and allow Iraq to build a democracy.

It makes my head spin that people feel Americans are similar to the Nazi, if the plan was to eradicate life in Iraq the war would of been over in a month. And I'm not speaking of using nuclear weapons, simple full scale war.

I really liked your arguments Carloseus, you have a brain. You aren't all about conspiracy theories or have a dooms day mentality.

For the record, do I agree that there has been some screw ups with Iraq? Absolutely. I'm still up in arms as to whether going to Iraq was a good idea or not, in a decade or so I'm sure my confusion will be answered, setting up a democracy and stabilizing is a tough job and seeing the fruits of our and Iraq's labor will take time.

Depending on whether we pull out troops or stay, half a century from now Iraq may be an extremely productive member of our society as a whole, or it may remain what it is today, we must wait.

posted a message on Would you pay to play Diablo III?
I'd absolutely pay, people just can't seem to grasp that they pay so much more for lesser forms of entertainment.

I keep trying to get into the mindset and all I can come up with is either due to being young and/or lack of job, or as I said in another thread weeks ago, social stigma surrounding video games. Poor rationalization by these people, I spent nearly $1,000 last month for a weekend of mediocore entertainment. I easily spend over $300 a month on forms of entertainment beyond video games and none of them deliver what a game I find joyous can. And that's unlimited, whenever you want entertainment, I make it exactly what I want.

Paying to play is quite possibly the most cost effective type of entertainment we have. If I decided to stop being social with friends and family think of the cash I would save, just by a bare minimum estimation, if I decided to start being a big heaping pile of man and sit in my house all day, I would save $3,600/yr a year.

So what's wrong with paying to play? If anyone who spends money on forms of entertainment beyond video games, but remains anti-pay to play, mind giving me some insight to your disagreement?

Just questioning motives, whether people don't feel they're recieving adequate service for the fee, or a "stickin' it to the man" dealie. Whatever it may be, share.
