I wonder how cutscenes will work into online play? I mean, it seemed that there were cutscenes before boss battles. Will everyonehave to wait until everyone else has watched the scene until the battle starts? Or is it optional?

posted a message on Stat points - issues and solutions?
Well, the way i see it, stat points are sort of an illusion anyway. I'm not just trying to be cynical. What i mean is, the magic-based classes won't have much of a need for most, if any, of the high-strength items.

Take World of Warcraft for example. If you look at the stats on the high-armor value plate armors, they are stuff a caster-class would never dream of putting on their character anyway, because it's geared 100% towards the warrior who can equip it. Same with cloth armor - no warrior wants to run around with low armor and high intelligence (magic basically)

i think they are eliminating a sort of illusion-based system by simply giving you what you'll need.

Now, the only downside to this is that if you take away anything else, it may not feel like an RPG anymore at all. Hell, you can give yourself new abilities in Star Wars The Force Unleashed, yet it isn't an RPG by any stretch. So, they can only take away so much before it becomes and action game with just a few hints of RPG qualities.

Diablo is about FEAR...in D2, that element was missing. Remove TPs, u get more fear and increased gameplay speed

Silent Hill is about fear. Diablo is about clicking everything :P

Honestly, i never saw Diablo as being about fear. D1 was scary later in the game because the music is sorta "dooming" and the levels are a little creepy, but other than that, if you want fear, play Silent Hill: Homecoming or Doom 3. There's just not really anything scary about D2 until, maybe, Diablo's lair, but that's more like anticipation than fear, because you know exactly what's gonna happen when you open those seals even on the first playthrough, heh

I really hate this, it seems that Blizzard is making a concerted effort to port their WOW system into Diablo 3. Why? Because WOW is popular? There are plenty of people who do not like WOW, I am one of them.

WOW is so watered down, and "kid" friendly a monkey (even without opposable thumbs) could play it and pwn an average player.

One of the major aspects of a "role" playing game, is that you have control over what your character does. With this iteration you don't really have much choice.

I really hate when customization in any capacity for anything, is sacrificed for a certain group of people.

I was really excited when I learned that D3 was finally going to be release, however after seeing all the WOW carryovers, I'm wondering if I will spend my money on this game.

    Sad...

they are using ideas that work, because....they work. Not only that, but they have rhard evidence and player feedback from WoW that it works.

You have to realize that the idea of different character builds is sort of an illusion. In D2 you COULD make a sorc and give her nothing but strength. But is that a good idea? no. Will anyone do it just because they can? No, not unless they are bored or enjoy roleplaying a suicidal hero. Same thing with cloth and mail armor. You COULD make a barb and only wear cloth. But is that a good idea in any way? No. Just because you Can do something in a game, doesn't make it a legitimate choice.

This system eliminates any silly character builds. And the "alternative" builds from D2 (like Hammerdins and and any other class trying to be another class) will probably be implimented through a different system, like through talents.

As for WoW being "kid friendly"...have you ever played WoW? I could beat D2 on all it's difficulty levels with every class in the time it takes to reach 70 in WoW, not to mention, WoW (if you're playing right) requires WAY more thought into your character build, because it's all about the talents you chose, what combination of them you use, when and how you use them...instead of just choosing one skill and useing it 100% of the time brainlessly like in D2.

To sum it up, choice of build in D2 is an illusion and depends on the skills/talents you chose far more than the stats you chose, so they are making a great choice.

lol, they need to hire a poet or something for some of the ability names.
it sounds basic at first, but the sorcerer/ess has been part of diablo since the beginning, and this is sort of a rebellious style of sorcerer/ess, which is a cool idea. Using magic that is supposed to be forbidden helps out the idea of how the character is supposed to feel powerful playing that class

4 is all you really need. I mean, this ain't WoW, you don't need to fill 25 speciffic slots for people. this will also make people focus more on being helpful, because there's less to back you up if you decide to get lazy. the no-potions thing still has me scratching my head though, and i was honestly hoping for higher difficulty rather than lower one. But maybe it will be compaable to the previous ones, i mean, D2 was simple when you first start but the diffuculty level quickly raises as you get into the 20's or so. There's a difference between being "powerful" in a game, and the game just being easy.

This is the only thing that still worries me. Star Wars the Force Unleashed is supposed to make you feel powerful, but you get used to it quickly, and then it gets too fast-paced to handle. I've noticed a trend in games that are supposed to make you feel powerful. That is, that they do make you feel poreful - in the beginning. Then you realize your enemies go back and forth between complete pushovers and overpowered death machines. But who knows, this is a different developer and series than any of the games i'm talking about, so i guess we'll see

They did this in WoW, and it works perfectly. It keeps the classes separated from each other so that you don't have pallies running around trying to be mages and whatnot. I honestly always thought of assigning stats as sort of pointless, because each class has what it's "supposed" to do, i mean, that's why there's different classes. I just hope they continue to let us assign our talents or it might go from an RPG to an action game...

honestly my idea was to take a character from D2 that no one would normally think of playing (in this case, the first elite monster most players run into, since the idea of a low level elite is comical in itself) and using him as a sort of comic-relief characters (similar to the roles of Jar-Jar Binks or C3PO of Star Wars) but if you prefer it go in a serious direction i completely respect that. I'll admit i got a bit carried away :P Sorry about that.

posted a message on PvP Dueling Ante
    Quote from "mattheo_majik" »
Archetype, man where are you coming from with all this off topic trade thing.

Obviously one would have to understand the values of items and basic trading in order to understand offering items up for ante for dueling. Because no one is going to duel for an item that they don't know the value of. The idea of offering ante has everything to do with understanding the value of items, because the two players are literally fighting over the itmes. How anything i've said is off topic is beyond me.

I don't hate the idea of ante or anything, in fact it could work. I just wanted to point out that it's a pretty advanced idea for a game where we don't even know how the basic trading will work yet. In theory, a system like this could offer experienced players a reason to do PvP other than personal satisfaction, but, it could aslo be a double-whammy against people. It's bad enough to lose a duel, but to lose an item because you lost a duel would really rub it in your face.

I'm not saying that the game should focus on the underdogs of the game, i am saying, however, that Blizzard seems to remove as much "grieving" (as they put it) as they can in D3, so when there is a potential for a system to be abused, misused, or exploited, especially when it concerns player interaction, then they might think twice about using it.

For example: In D2, just because people have the opportunity to PK others doesn't mean that they will. Obviously not everyone PKs. But, since that system was abused quite a bit, Blizzard is changing it. So, i have a feeling that they will continue this approach when it comes to other aspects of the game as well. Meaning that concepts that have the potential of being used against other players have a high probability of not being used.

If I was the president of the US, I would probably start calling you a member of the "axis of evil" since you dont support a democracy with free trade.

If you were president of the US, would you also be offering up an ante window before you went to war? lol. i can see it now..."Wait, before we go to war, lemme see what i have to gain from this battle. Let's see here, you offer me...land. And it's not even a set or unique land. Pshh, forget it!"

Slowing an enemy by 5%? That might be a lot in WoW, but i think Diablo tends to up the scale a little. 50% would be a little more reasonable for a faster-paced game like Diablo 3.

being locked into one of the nations worst wars of all times, when the US is probably on the verge of collapse...

Hmm. So, you feel that the current war is worse than both world wars? Worse than Vietnam? Worse than the Civil War, where our enemies were our own brothers and fellow countrymen? That's interesting.

Anyway, since necromancers had nothing, or at least very little to do with any world wars (ya never know, maybe necromancers did it) i'll get back on topic here. I believe the necromancers basically ARE the priests of Rathma, just by a different name. The skills used in the books were a more "realistic," (if that term even applies for fantasy stuff) take on what the necromancer could do. I mean, Zayl used the Teeth skill in one of the books, but i don't think that implies that he was a "low level" or inexperienced necro, it just means that no one in real life stands around putting points into a skill tree, instead they actually have to learn how to do things.

When it comes to fiction based on games like this, you can't really blame them for skipping over stuff like stats. It would be silly to have him level up and stand around putting points into himself after beating a monster. I mean, should characters in Lord of the Rings roll dice before they attack something to see if they can hit it or not?

I agree entirely, i'm glad it's going to be more player-friendly. Getting PKed and even dueling seems like just a distraction from the actual game. If i'm trying to fight evil, i don't want some guy that's supposed to on my side coming out and trying to kill me while i'm already being killed by demons. There's no point.

Well, maybe the monsters don't get along with eachother, just like how some players don't get along. I can imagine that demons are probably pretty focused on pride, so maybe they are fighting over who gets to be the one to fight off the next adventurer? In the other Diablo games, the will of the demons isn't always totally clear, so maybe it will be explained, but maybe not.

    posted a message on Hail!
Stay a while and listen! er...*clears throat*...Hello. I've had an account here for a long time, since i've been anticipating the release of Diablo 3 ever since the rumors popped up, so i've been around for the ups and downs of wondering if it was true.

However, i just recently started posting often here. I had previously been just reading the news as it came out, but i had too many opinions to keep them to myself anymore.

So, since i'm posting now, allow me to introduce myself. I've beaten D1 and D2 (on all difficulties) and currently have two level 70's on World of Warcraft.

I'm a total metalhead, all sorts of heavy metal, from "nu-metal" like Slipknot and Korn to oldschool stuff like old Metallica and Sepultura, and i love death metal, black metal, and doom metal. My personal favorites are Slipknot, Meshuggah, Opeth, Neurosis, At the Gates, and Satyricon. I'm pretty open-minded about music though, and i like a lot of bands that no metal head would normally be caught dead listening to (some bluegrass, 80's rock, industrial, and several ambient groups including a lot of video game soundtracks, like the music from Metal Gear, World of Warcraft, and Silent Hill)

Other games i am a huge fan of include the Silent Hill series, Metal Gear series, Assassin's Creed, and Final Fantasy (1, 7, 8, and 12)

    Nice to meet you all.
