i solo'd a lot on hardcore mode to keep from being pk'd. and that's what the hostility system really amounted to: getting pk'd. duels were pretty unbalanced too, as a paladin could be almost immune to all elements and just run around spells, then charge.
the only other reason to solo was just to keep the difficulty level at a minimum so that people joining and staying in town wouldn't leave you the only one out there fighting monsters that were suddenly 7 times tougher. and that actually happened a lot, with all the beggars and people too lazy to make their own trade game.

It'll be a Strategic Tactical Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Pro-Skating RPG with Paladins.
you, sir or madam, are a genius. just trying to imagine that has me lolirl
if you've played Metal Gear Solid 2: substinance, then you've actually seen something close to this with the silly Solid Snake skateboarding thing...what a strange experience. i'm glad they didn't build upon that too much. my mind can only handle so many genres as once.
but i'd totally spec for grinding, and get the unlockable unique Azurewrath Skateboard of Accurate-Headshots-While-Grinding. then i'd throw grenades into enemy skateshops while doing a nose manual in Tristram's local military skate park-base -
Jul 9, 2008Archetype_Zero posted a message on Diablo III PK and PvPi'm totally guilty of being a PK for a while in Diablo 1. i wasn't trying to ruin people's fun or anything, i waited until someone killed someone else, then i'd track down the pk and offer him a real challenge. i think they called it "PKK." i enjoyed hunting the hunters. people thought they were cool enough to pick on lower levels and such, so i was there to give them a reality check, a taste of their own medicine.Posted in: News
but in D2 it seemed to really take from the gameplay. i mean, it was so backstabbing, with the Townportal-PKing and all that...it wasn't a hunt anymore, it was a slaguhter. the hunt was fun in D1 because you could escape the attacker in different ways because there was no instant death (besides the "hacks" of course) but in D2 there was no hunt...you were simply dead before you knew what hit you. now, i didn't care at all if someone PKed me unless i was on hardcore mode. Pking COMPLETELY ruined the whole concept of hardcore mode to me, because it isn't about PVP, it's about how much your character can handle PVE.
my point is...if it can be looked at as a hunt, or perhaps a duel, then it can actually be fun. but if it's just a backstabbing betrayal by someone that was in your party 5 seconds ago, or if it's a death that you never saw coming, then it's no fun at all.
i like WoW's system honestly. if you wanna fight, you play on a PVP server or you flag yourself. it's not a hunt or a slaughter, but rather an invitation for conflict. it's a way of saying "hey, come get some!" and it's a great way to find players who actually want to be "hunted" or to find those who think they are tough enough to handle anything that comes their way. it's fun. -
Jul 9, 2008Archetype_Zero posted a message on Blizzard Comments On The Classes In Diablo 3the necromancer played a big part in the Diablo book series. after reading some Richard Knaak's books i really began to understand the role of the necromancer, and i really grew an appreciation for it. i have nothing against the idea of the Witch Doctor since it's such a neat idea, but it would be nice to see the necromancer return.Posted in: News
i must say that i am hoping for the paladin, and it's because of the combination of physical and magically enhanced combat (like Vengeance) but i'm kinda worried that they are straying away from characters that aren't purely one style of play. i hope they can find a place for either the necromancer (even if it is, perhaps, heavily reworked) and the Paladin (which may be overshadowed entirely by the Barbarian) - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.

Take World of Warcraft for example. If you look at the stats on the high-armor value plate armors, they are stuff a caster-class would never dream of putting on their character anyway, because it's geared 100% towards the warrior who can equip it. Same with cloth armor - no warrior wants to run around with low armor and high intelligence (magic basically)
i think they are eliminating a sort of illusion-based system by simply giving you what you'll need.
Now, the only downside to this is that if you take away anything else, it may not feel like an RPG anymore at all. Hell, you can give yourself new abilities in Star Wars The Force Unleashed, yet it isn't an RPG by any stretch. So, they can only take away so much before it becomes and action game with just a few hints of RPG qualities.

Silent Hill is about fear. Diablo is about clicking everything
Honestly, i never saw Diablo as being about fear. D1 was scary later in the game because the music is sorta "dooming" and the levels are a little creepy, but other than that, if you want fear, play Silent Hill: Homecoming or Doom 3. There's just not really anything scary about D2 until, maybe, Diablo's lair, but that's more like anticipation than fear, because you know exactly what's gonna happen when you open those seals even on the first playthrough, heh

they are using ideas that work, because....they work. Not only that, but they have rhard evidence and player feedback from WoW that it works.
You have to realize that the idea of different character builds is sort of an illusion. In D2 you COULD make a sorc and give her nothing but strength. But is that a good idea? no. Will anyone do it just because they can? No, not unless they are bored or enjoy roleplaying a suicidal hero. Same thing with cloth and mail armor. You COULD make a barb and only wear cloth. But is that a good idea in any way? No. Just because you Can do something in a game, doesn't make it a legitimate choice.
This system eliminates any silly character builds. And the "alternative" builds from D2 (like Hammerdins and and any other class trying to be another class) will probably be implimented through a different system, like through talents.
As for WoW being "kid friendly"...have you ever played WoW? I could beat D2 on all it's difficulty levels with every class in the time it takes to reach 70 in WoW, not to mention, WoW (if you're playing right) requires WAY more thought into your character build, because it's all about the talents you chose, what combination of them you use, when and how you use them...instead of just choosing one skill and useing it 100% of the time brainlessly like in D2.
To sum it up, choice of build in D2 is an illusion and depends on the skills/talents you chose far more than the stats you chose, so they are making a great choice.

it sounds basic at first, but the sorcerer/ess has been part of diablo since the beginning, and this is sort of a rebellious style of sorcerer/ess, which is a cool idea. Using magic that is supposed to be forbidden helps out the idea of how the character is supposed to feel powerful playing that class

This is the only thing that still worries me. Star Wars the Force Unleashed is supposed to make you feel powerful, but you get used to it quickly, and then it gets too fast-paced to handle. I've noticed a trend in games that are supposed to make you feel powerful. That is, that they do make you feel poreful - in the beginning. Then you realize your enemies go back and forth between complete pushovers and overpowered death machines. But who knows, this is a different developer and series than any of the games i'm talking about, so i guess we'll see

Obviously one would have to understand the values of items and basic trading in order to understand offering items up for ante for dueling. Because no one is going to duel for an item that they don't know the value of. The idea of offering ante has everything to do with understanding the value of items, because the two players are literally fighting over the itmes. How anything i've said is off topic is beyond me.
I don't hate the idea of ante or anything, in fact it could work. I just wanted to point out that it's a pretty advanced idea for a game where we don't even know how the basic trading will work yet. In theory, a system like this could offer experienced players a reason to do PvP other than personal satisfaction, but, it could aslo be a double-whammy against people. It's bad enough to lose a duel, but to lose an item because you lost a duel would really rub it in your face.
I'm not saying that the game should focus on the underdogs of the game, i am saying, however, that Blizzard seems to remove as much "grieving" (as they put it) as they can in D3, so when there is a potential for a system to be abused, misused, or exploited, especially when it concerns player interaction, then they might think twice about using it.
For example: In D2, just because people have the opportunity to PK others doesn't mean that they will. Obviously not everyone PKs. But, since that system was abused quite a bit, Blizzard is changing it. So, i have a feeling that they will continue this approach when it comes to other aspects of the game as well. Meaning that concepts that have the potential of being used against other players have a high probability of not being used.
If you were president of the US, would you also be offering up an ante window before you went to war? lol. i can see it now..."Wait, before we go to war, lemme see what i have to gain from this battle. Let's see here, you offer me...land. And it's not even a set or unique land. Pshh, forget it!"

Hmm. So, you feel that the current war is worse than both world wars? Worse than Vietnam? Worse than the Civil War, where our enemies were our own brothers and fellow countrymen? That's interesting.
Anyway, since necromancers had nothing, or at least very little to do with any world wars (ya never know, maybe necromancers did it) i'll get back on topic here. I believe the necromancers basically ARE the priests of Rathma, just by a different name. The skills used in the books were a more "realistic," (if that term even applies for fantasy stuff) take on what the necromancer could do. I mean, Zayl used the Teeth skill in one of the books, but i don't think that implies that he was a "low level" or inexperienced necro, it just means that no one in real life stands around putting points into a skill tree, instead they actually have to learn how to do things.
When it comes to fiction based on games like this, you can't really blame them for skipping over stuff like stats. It would be silly to have him level up and stand around putting points into himself after beating a monster. I mean, should characters in Lord of the Rings roll dice before they attack something to see if they can hit it or not?

However, i just recently started posting often here. I had previously been just reading the news as it came out, but i had too many opinions to keep them to myself anymore.
So, since i'm posting now, allow me to introduce myself. I've beaten D1 and D2 (on all difficulties) and currently have two level 70's on World of Warcraft.
I'm a total metalhead, all sorts of heavy metal, from "nu-metal" like Slipknot and Korn to oldschool stuff like old Metallica and Sepultura, and i love death metal, black metal, and doom metal. My personal favorites are Slipknot, Meshuggah, Opeth, Neurosis, At the Gates, and Satyricon. I'm pretty open-minded about music though, and i like a lot of bands that no metal head would normally be caught dead listening to (some bluegrass, 80's rock, industrial, and several ambient groups including a lot of video game soundtracks, like the music from Metal Gear, World of Warcraft, and Silent Hill)
Other games i am a huge fan of include the Silent Hill series, Metal Gear series, Assassin's Creed, and Final Fantasy (1, 7, 8, and 12)
Nice to meet you all.
